Trying to stop so many juniors from leaving early.

quote:

HOOVER, Ala. -- Florida coach Will Muschamp said the NFL was "trying to help" with the rising number of underclassmen entering the NFL draft on Monday, but offered no explanation as to how.

Now we know what the changes will be, per NFL Media reporter Albert Breer, after Alabama coach Nick Saban hinted at them Thursday at SEC Media Days.

FYI: Saban was correct. Per @NFL, underclassmen will now be given 3 grades: 1st-round, 2nd-round, or neither, which equals "stay in school".

The old system gave underclassmen four grades: 1st-round, 2nd-round, 3rd-5th-round, and "lower". So they erased the 3rd-5th category.

Waaaaaay past due.

This past underclassmen draft, or lack thereof, was an abomination a discredit to the system ... which was obviously flawed.

The only good thing about it is that now coaches have three dozen high profile examples of why many underclassmen should not leave early.

It was getting out of hand.

honestly, i think this is a bad idea. if you're projected as a 3rd rounder or even a 4th rounder, depending on your position, there's absolutely nothing wrong with leaving early. as an adult making a business decision, they should be given all the information necessary to make that decision. i think only giving grades for rounds 1 and 2 is going too far. maybe that's just me

It wont.

League minimum is enough of an enticement for a junior to go get paid for a year and then get cut and join the real world.

Why not have tiers that yo ucan declare for and if you do not get within that tier, then you can return to school?

Declare fully and go to the combine and get all the agent perks

Declare for the full draft(no combine) and if you dont get drafted, you can return to school.

Declare for a Top 3 rounds(no combine) and if you dont go in the first three but do go later, you can return to school.

What is the harm there? They have not gotten paid yet and have not missed any school. From Jan-March they are still on campus going through pro days and workouts anyways.

This is good for college football; because it will hopefully deter young men from making a poor choice. I for one would love to see more teams having more seniors; which could produce a better product on the field. It's a win for the players, and the college teams.
