He basically insulted things that are slightly more cognizant of their own existence than a crawfish... Why the outrage?

When you use the media to say what he did his message spreads far and wide and becomes very inappropriate and unprofessional because he's using the power of the media tools he's been given to spread stereotypes about an entire group of people. His responsibility is not to abuse the position he's been given - he could've said the town sucked without getting into nastier stuff. He didn't at all have to attack the people and attacking the people is where he gets into trouble.
