Definitions:
Liberal- (of a person) giving generously.
Socialism- a political and economic theory of social organization that advocates that the means of production, distribution, and exchange should be owned or regulated by the community as a whole.
Similar, but liberalism deals with money and socialism deals with action. Not stating an opinion, just a clarification.

This is exactly why conservatives should stay away from defining Socialism. There are many camps of Socialism just as there are many camps of Capitalism (as an example).
The modern day liberal party's only shared ideology is that they want higher wages and more power for the workers (theoretically). Other than that there is almost nothing in common. Most Socialists hate the Democratic Party.
