Taternet article: why people no want Venables to be HC?!?!
This article made me laugh...hard. Taters want to know why nobody ever talks about taking Venables as a HC?!?! Here's the truth...he's not great at the job he already has, why the hell would someone give him a promotion?
Venables is a Defensive Coordinator and has been one of the highest paid DC's for years. Venables is the 6th highest paid DC in the NCAA and the 7th highest paid Asst Coach Overall in the NCAA.
2013 Coaches Salaries
How have his Total Defenses ranked over the years? Let's look at some stats.
2013 Total Defense - 25th clem5on
2012 Total Defense - 63rd clem5on
2011 Total Defense - 55th Oklahoma
2010 Total Defense - 53rd Oklahoma
2009 Total Defense - 8th Oklahoma
2008 Total Defense - 68th Oklahoma

So in the past 6 seasons as a DC he has only ONE Top 10 Total Defense. His avg Total Defense over the past 6 years would be ranked 45th...but he is paid like a Top 6 Defensive Coordinator...
Let's throw a little more salt on this. Now take Coach Lorenzo Ward as an example. Coach Ward is the 10th highest paid DC in the NCAA and 13th highest paid Asst Coach overall. Let's look a his stats.
2013 Total Defense - 19th
2012 Total Defense - 11th USC
2011 Total Defense - 3rd (EJ was Asst HC, Ward's 1st year as DC at USC)
Ward has had a Top 20 Total Defense EVERY year he's been a DC (for he past 3 years.) Venables has been in the Top 20 only ONCE in the past 6 years.
Q: Why is nobody looking at Venables for HC jobs or better DC jobs?!?!?
A: Because he's certainly not great (or even really that good) at his job, he's not even in the Top 40 for his DC position, and he's GROSSLY overpaid for the production his defenses give.
I'm not mad though, I think it's funny every time someone screws over the taters, it's even better that this is an inside job this time. First Micah "RockSmasher", now Venables........perfect.

The overall talent on the Cu defense has gotten better, and I expect their total defense numbers to improve next season as well...of course, we also need to take into consideration that Clemson plays in the woeful ACC, and bloat their team and individual stats raping basketball schools.
So I'm sure Swinney and the fanbase will have more to boast about next year and beyond...doesn't mean much though when they go up against legit opponents with legit defenses, but as long as USC keeps fielding legit defenses against them year after year, I have no problem with that...

I could understand their confusion about Morris not getting more looks, but Venables?
Wasn't his seat getting a little warm at OU before jumping to Auburn-lite?

OH YEAH! OU welcomed back DC Stoops with open arms. Every OU fan knows that Venables rode Mike Stoops coattails at OU for years. Under Stoops as the DC, OU was fielding consistent Top 20 Total Defenses, then he left and Venables had a Top 20 Defense for 1 year, then sucked for a while, then had a good year where he was 8th, but then fell to around average in Total Defense. OU didn't even entertain the idea of matching what clem5on offered.
