Because our sports teams are an extension of our identity, life experiences and way of life.
People are proud to be associated with a certain team.
They had childhood experiences (tailgating, parents, friday nights/saturdays/schools traditions) that have emotionally tied them to their team.
It's no different than being nationalistic on a smaller scale.
When people attack your identity/way of life/traditions, you defend it with pride.
