Why do people take anything (not just sports) beyond normal limits? It depends but if we're talking CFB look at the state of Alabama—there's no NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, or MLS so people generally take it way more seriously. It's pretty much the only game in town and then some people just don't have anything else going on in their life like family, other pursuits/interests, creative outlets, etc...
