Well, the first part is simply because we choose what we become emotionally invested in. No matter how OT rich you are, most of us live pretty common lives. Sports are a fun outlet and something we can have in common with others...the whole social connection thing...blah, blah.

But for the second part, its all about the interwebs, social media and sports radio (think Pawl). As a fan long before internet forums and such, you didn't have this kind of hate and vitriol. The idiots were always out there, but had no outlet to drive their lunacy.
