Speed cannot handle power. Tennessee you have neither, therefore you get blown out by Oregon.

A powerhouse hurricane (Oregon) can't handle going over a landmass either (Stanford). When there's interaction, the land may take a brief hit but the hurricane gets dismantled and shown to be nothing but a bunch of hot air.
