Semantics. The Republican Party, in the two party system, is the acting representative party of the conservative ideology. As of 2012, the official Republican Party Platform calls to Constitutionally define marriage as one man and one woman and a Consitutional Ban on gay marriage.
One party or side might claim to be less involved with social issues, but that only applies to the ones they agree to. Liberals and their anti-Christian agenda is the same as conservatives and their anti-gay agenda.
