Comments/Notes from an interview between Coach Holbrook & John Whittle (Insider for our 247).
247 Thread
Also some comments from JW who received questions from posters on 247:
Q: I don't know who he us thinking about at 3rd. Schrock?
A: Schrock and Arendas, specifically. Mooney can play short or second. Gore could play second or short or possibly run around in the outfield a little bit.
Q: Whittle Are you confident enough to say Omaha?
A: I'll say this. ... I've been right each of the last five seasons. I think this is an Omaha team.
A: I do think this team has CWS talent and makeup. I think it has the ability to put itself in position to be a Top 8 seed, probably a Top 4 seed (not that it makes a difference whether you're first or eighth). I also think Grayson Greiner is the difference between a Top 8 seed and a slightly better than .500 record. He absolutely, 100 percent has to stay healthy. Losing him would be devastating.
Looking forward to February.

-- The biggest piece of news, in my eyes, is that barring Joey Pankake begging to be on the mound, his pitching career is done at South Carolina. Pankake, as you may remember, was shut down after his first inning on the mound during the fall and kept from throwing in any capacity due to discomfort in his elbow. He will begin a throwing program this week to get his arm going again but he will not pitch. He's too valuable defensively and offensively to risk his arm. He finishes career with 0.0 innings pitched.
-- The least surprising news but one of the most interesting things Holbrook said was Grayson Greiner is "very close to being irreplaceable" behind the plate. Holbrook said he'd be comfortable putting Logan Koch, the backup, out right now in a midweek game but not an SEC game. He said he expects Koch to be ready to catch against conference teams by the time SEC play rolls around. While there's a considerable gap between Greiner and Koch, there's an even bigger gap between Koch and the rest of the competition.
-- Holbrook said that he would find it real hard to pick a football player to be on this year's team with part of the reason being there is a roster full of players here for the whole fall and they'll just be with the team for three weeks in the preseason. It seemed like a nice way of saying, "Don't bother," which is what we've been saying for a while.
-- Competition is healthy for the closer role and third starter position on the weekend. Holbrook did a good job of not leaving any names out when talking about options. Cody Mincey has the inside track on closer and, from the sounds of it, Josh Reagan and Wil Crowe are two to really watch for final starters role.
-- With the way South Carolina's four middle infielders - Marcus Mooney, DC Arendas, Max Schrock and Jordan Gore - played this fall, look for them to see some action at third base, too. Holbrook said he's toying with the idea of getting three plus-gloves on the infield, which means having Joey Pankake or Elliott Caldwell in left with the other one DH'ing.
-- Called Jordan Gore a "tough nut" and said "I have to find a place for him." ... Weber Pike struck out three times in 70 at-bats. ... Called Connor Bright a "silent assassin."

I never found out why Graham Saiko was dismissed from the team, who is his replacement? and will there be a dropoff in production there?

There was never a clear reason given by Holbrook, at least I never heard any. But I believe it was something he did against team rules and just decided he didn't want to return. He was quoted as saying "The baseball program has stricter policy on player conduct that the rest of the athletic department." back in September when dismissed.

Right now it's not set in stone but the candidates are Pankake or Elliott Caldwell who came from SMC, really known for his bat.

I think whoever starts will have a better bat than Saiko, defensively unsure probably around the same if not a little better. Both will be converted infielders to outfielders just like Saiko was.

One thing that really, REALLY needs to improve this coming season will be team fielding percentage, also known as defense.
When you think of defense in the SEC for college baseball, traditionally under Ray Tanner you thought of South Carolina, as USC was the class of the SEC in team fielding %:
2000: 3rd (.965)
2001: 1st (.970 - tied with Vandy)
2002: 1st (.975)
2003: 2nd (.973)
2004: 2nd (.973)
2005: 3rd (.971)
2006: 1st (.978)
2007: 2nd (.974)
2008: 1st (.977)
2009: 1st (.974 - tied with LSU)
2010: 3rd (.975)
2011: 1st (.974 - tied with UF and UGA)
2012: 1st (.980 - tied with LSU)
2013: 9th (.970)
No other team in the conference since 2000 came close to USC in leading the conference in fielding %, and this included many of the "Guerrilla Ball" years under Tanner when everyone in the lineup was hitting 10-15 homeruns, at least. Now a days with the new bats and power numbers at an extreme ration, playing solid defense is even more than paramount than before, as a run or two here or there matters to scoring outcomes than ever before...
Finishing 9th in the conference in fielding % is something that was unheard of under Tanner, and I hope Coach Holbrook is taking the necessary measures to bring our defense back up to the elite of the conference for this point forward. Sounds like he is trying to do just that with the infield options...

I think he broke the team rule when he dropped the easy fly ball in Game 1 against UNC. The two out fly ball and missing the cutoff man that would've kept them from scoring and probably changed the game and not cost us those runs. I'm not saying we lost the Super Regional b/c of Saiko, but those types of mistakes can't happen to a team looking to go to Omaha.

Looking forward to this baseball season and us getting back to Omaha right away.
Last season was an abomination. Just too many fielding errors, failure to bring runners home in a timely fashion and, honestly, I think some of it had to do with the transition from Ray to Chad.
It'll all be better this year barring major injuries.

Yep, and somehow after all that we were still only 1 game away from Omaha.
