He went in after Patrick got hurt. I guess they didn't mind separating Rodgers and Park in terms of class status but since Rodgers isn't likely to get much playing time this year I'd have liked to see him keep the redshirt.

Although I guess it could have been similar to Ronald Patrick going in for 1 play against Arkansas in 2010 because he was the only option available.

NaTy has been killing it on the scout team, so they moved him up the depth chart. He's the best backup OG we have right now. Patrick has a high ankle sprain and may miss several weeks, so NaTy gives us the best shot to keep doing what we're doing. Patrick was gone after this year anyways, so Na'Ty would likely still be a 2-3 year starter after this season. That's enough time for him to get enough scout looks to go Pro.

Offensive linemen rarely rarely go early ... but the rest I totally agree with about him needing playing time this year.

I'm actually surprised they didn't do it earlier and it also hints at which OLineman might not have his schollie renewed after this season.

Patrick is listed as doubtful for the UT game so I guess Rodgers gets the start.

He looked massive out there. Was very surprised to see how big he was

From what I understand, Will Sport's schollie is in jeopardy.

Didn't realize he was on scholarship. Makes sense.

It'll be interesting to see if Matulis comes back next year

We have 4 graduating Sr's. We'll have 3-5 try to Go Pro early. So let's just say 4 go early. That means we'll only have 8 spots for scholarship players. We have 13 commits right now, and 4-5 takes still on the board.

Most likely I think there would be 6 people cut. I don't have any inside knowledge and this is all speculation. However, I would think that any 3rd+ year players who are not on the 2 Deep right now would be the first to get cut. Just by taking a look at the scholarship breakdown and depth chart you can pretty much guess who. McLaurin and Rhodes were also put on scholarships from the walk on squad, so those may also not be renewed next year. If their scholarships are renewed for next year, then we'll have to find 8 to cut.

Walkons usually are good students. The way we've been doing it with walkons is to reward them in other ways if they come from families with means - and if they don't the school finds them grant money and things like that. So good walkons are a valuable commodity in today's world of limited schollies.

Unproductive scholarship recruits who just don't pan-out are another story. A lot of factors come into play.

Some of them just peter-out early, llose interest, lose motivation, lose whatever ... they usually know it is coming by the end of their sophomore season. They can see the writing on the wall.

It all works out and usually with no hard feelings. A lot of times our coaches even find places for them to transfer to, so it all works out.

From what I understand we are going to sign 18, enroll 14 and place 4.

Eta: About the ones that will, or might, declare early.

It's a foregone conclusion that Clowney is gone. 75% chance that Quarels leaves early as well if he gets positive feedback from the board. Then there is Hampton. He might go, might actually be encouraged to go, he wants to go early even ... but it's 50/50.

I'm not sure who the other two you are referring to might be?

I'd assume Cann and Robinson/Shell

Cann, Robinson, Shell, Clowney, Hampton, Ellington, Quarles. Those are the 7 that I think would have some inclination to go early, but only 3-5 may go. It all depends on what they do the rest of the season.

Shell is only a sophomore, albeit a RSo, and neither A.J. or Corey are going to leave early. They are not even thinking about that - and will not. They're only thinking about surviving this season.

Offensive linemen just do not leave early except for very rare occasions. It almost never pays-off for an OLineman unless he is a first team All-American and is so dominant that he is a game changer at his position.

Burning Na'Ty Rodgers' redshirt last week looks really fricking stupid since he couldn't beat out Will Sport at RG.

Sport played like dogshit and looked like he would struggle against a highschool JV team.
