I've not read the book in a long time, probably since the 70s, but if I remember correctly the 2001 Monolith was always at a ratio of 1-4-9 or something like that (and I cannot remember why) ... so ours is not an exact representation of course, but yes, Cocky's entrance, since we began doing it, was always meant to represent the Monolith.
Eta: I forget who made the decision to do that but it did not begin with the first use of Thus Spoke Zaranthustra.
