The Chucky Mullins story. I still have my copy of the essay from Southern Living, November 1990.
Some notes: when Chucky was recruited, and given a scholarship, he did not have the money to get to Oxford.
OM was 5-2 when we played Vandy on October 28, 1989. We had beaten Florida away with only 128 offensive yards, beat Georgia with a TD pass with 31 seconds left, beat Tulane in NOLA on a pass with 4 seconds left. Stars: All-American safety Todd Sandroni, QB John Darnell, soph RB's Randy Baldwin and Tyrone Ashley, WR Willie Green, TE Rich Gebbia of Long Island NY.
When Chucky went down, Coach Brewer did not go on the field, "I thought the kid was dead."
OM was down 10-0 at the half, and came back to win 24-17.
The next game was LSU in Oxford, the first time since 1960. Largest crowd in campus history at 42,354. Seven men in the finals for "Colonel Reb" withdrew from the election and swung the honor to Chucky.
Hundreds of students passed buckets and $240,000 was raised at the game. Chucky listened on the radio at ICU in Memphis. OM down 35-10 late in 3rd quarter ("LSU Tom Hodson was magnificent") but Rebels came back to 35-30. First and 10 from the LSU 30 with about 30 seconds left.
Had Ole Miss scored, and gone for two points, OM "would have achieved a symbolic 38."

My mom saved that article as well. My mom doesn't give two shites about football or Ole Miss. But that story really touched her. Chucky Mullins, Hank Gathers, Eric LeGrand, these guys are all a major part of the history of collegiate sports.
