It was a Helms Trophy. We have one too. We don't claim it as a National Championship though.

Wrong, it was awarded following the 1935 American Legion Bowl Game after the Tigers beat Pitt. The game was actually billed as "The National Championship".
The Helms trophy was awarded retroactively for seasons before 1940.
