It's more than that. It also plays into recruiting strategy. "Hey Johnny McWideout, we just got a commitment Cannon O'Quarterback, the four star guy. Don't you want to be on a team with him?"

But yeah, there's nothing formal or official about them, but they aren't as insignificant as you make them out to be.
