It goes without saying that UA has Updyke. He is a sad kind of nutty though. A lesser known nut is William "Shorty" Price. Here is an section from Wiki on him.

quote:

Price was famous for his antics at Crimson Tide football games, which sometimes landed him in jail. In 1979, after Price pleaded guilty to public drunkenness and disorderly conduct charges following the Alabama-Tennessee game at Legion Field in Birmingham, Circuit Judge William Cole told him "See you next fall" after imposing a $125 fine

Awesome, eh?

Anyway, this guy ran for Governor a ton of times and was the type of character that you just don't see much these days.

Does your team have a Shorty of its own?

We have a few per sport.

Football- most "famous" I guess is Mike "big dawg" woods who paints the dawg on his head every game. The TV cameras always be sure to spot him in the crowd. He's not really crazy it's just his schtick. There's also a guy who's probably about 60 named "super dawg" who dresses in silver tights, a UGA shirt, and a red UGA cape to every game.

Basketball- Jesse the Jumper, or "the sweater". You would only recognize him if you've been to a UGA game in person because he doesn't sit on the side that shows on TV, but if you've been to one you'd know him. He sits in the middle of a bunch of older folks (he himself is probably 45 or 50) and jumps almost the entire game, pumping his arms up and down to encourage the crowd. He has also worn the same red and black diamond patterned sweater to every game for decades.

Baseball- StrapDawg. I think he got this name from some message board long ago. He gets hammered drunk and paces from 1st base to 3rd barking. That's about it, but it's pretty loud and extremely noticeable.

Not really nutty or famous. However, Gamecock Jesus is known by almost all Gamecock fans and he's stuck with the basketball team for years.

RIP Shorty.
I remember him well.
Usually had to be carried out by 3rd quarter
Voted on him for Gov.
He would be better than what we have now

Regarding Shorty Price, my parents tell a story about listening to the radio and some guy calling in to a talk show and claiming Shorty Price had been killed in a car wreck, which he had.

The radio host asked how he knew this, and the caller said "cuz I drove by, and I seem't it."

That's how my family's default explanation of how they know something to be true.

Not quite to that extent, but we do have "Vandy Lance", who pretty much specializes in heckling, especially at basketball and baseball games. Here's a link to a 2006 NYTimes article on him...
