And Chris Jones will be outstanding- but he isnt Clowny either

And the whole point of my statement was that he doesn't need to be. We don't have two guys who're getting drafted in the first three/four rounds in front of him. To put it in perspective, Denico and Preston totalled 9.5 sacks last year(and if I remember correctly most of Prestons sacks were garbage time). Ingram had 9 the year before Clowney came. Taylor had 7.5 and a pick-6. If you compare careers(which are notably both an incoming senior(Autry/Ingram) and an incoming junior(Taylor/Smith)) the disparity is even more apparent.

Denico AND Preston(careers)
84 tackles(50 solo), 15 TFL, 9.5 sacks, 1 INT, 4FF

Devin Taylor(up to but not including 2011)
74 tackles(49 solo), 18.5 TFL, 9.5 sacks, 1INT(1TD), 1FR, 2FF

Melvin Ingram(up to but not including 2011)
63 Tackles(41 solo), 15.5 TFL, 11.5 Sacks, 1 FF

Taylor and Ingram were both more proven AND more talented than Preston and Denico are. The situations really aren't comparable.

ok- let me explain it the way the coaches are thinking right now.

Autry really came on last season and was a force at the end of 2012. He will also be a Sr- his spot at SDE is rock solid.

Chris Jones is an outstanding talent that is raw and needs to learn alot of technique. He also needs to develop alot more shoulder strength.

Smith and Brown are guys that have been in the program awhile now. The coaches are high on both of these guys- especially Brown. They will be battling each other for the starting spot and should be solid on technique by the Fall.

If you put Jones at WDE with Smith and Brown, then that leaves AJ Jefferson working 2nd team to rest Autry. You also cut down reps for all 3 guys at WDE as they battle for the spot. It will take Jones at least 2/3 of the season to overtake those guys- if he does at all as a true freshman.

The best route is to let Jones back up Autry in the position Jones will play as a Sophomore- and he also doesnt have to learn two positions. Get his 20 snaps per game and experience while he gets better on technique. This also allows Smith and Brown to grow at their positions while getting more of the reps they need.
