Forgive me, but I forgot what the exact origin of grinding was. Anyone care to enlighten me once more, because I do feel dumb forgetting it.

One of those redundant Rant expressions that stopped being amusing a long time ago.

I don't know either, but I'll be damned if the fightin Merlins ain't making it mainstream on the rant.

In an eloquant essay by former ReBear turned Grinder, Whit Wade wrote an emotional account of what it was like to have one of Mullen's players in his class. While not the most scholarly of gentlemen, Anthony "Boobie" Dixon wrote a paper about how he loved working hard for his new coach. How the chips of the SEC west were stacked against us but the human spirit prevailed. He wasn't versed in the finer aspects of Mississippi culture. He tended to use words that, well frankly, not even Google could locate. He didn't have the most frattastic clothes to wear but he wore the love of a university and a state that was proud to call him their son. He ended his paper by stating one simple fact: that all he knew his whole life was hard work and that it was a grind everyday to better himself but he loved to grind for his State.

Other schools have players who contribute also. Some have crystal balls. Others have Heisman trophies. Some have probation. Mississippi State has been given something better, more precious. We have an addition to our lexicon. A word that unites our passionate fans around one soul purpose. And that is to Grind every day.

And the rest is history
