But once the ball kicks off in the new season they aren't the national champions anymore, nobody is. They were the previous season's champs, not the current season's. The whole "rank them 1 until someone beats them" thing is just completely illogical. Why would you rank someone #1 simply on the basis of what they did a year ago? Rank them by how they look THIS year.

The teams in preseason polls are voted based on last season along with returnees etc.
So either way last year is always taken into consideration.
