It’s a combination of his abilities and him coaching at Alabama. It's much easier to develop talent when you begin with great talent and it's easier to recruit to Alabama than most other schools.

Obviously Saban is older, wiser and more experienced now than when he was at Michigan State. However, he is essentially the same coach but his record and teams are much better at Alabama than they were at Michigan State. The main variable? He now coaches at Alabama.

Head coach has less control with GM's, salary caps, and free agency.
