It clearly means MSU was trying to offer money for Cam's servies. You know, as in pay rent. Cecil obviously didn't want that for his son.

No, they were just willing to pay rent. Cecil said "I want payment in full up front mother fricker".

To me, "rented mule" sounds like he thought an MSU scholarship wasn't worth that much and Can should be paid $100-180K

That doesn't sound like a mule...

Wrong. It meant MSU would rent Cam Newton for a scholarship, whereas at Auburn, he could be a hired mercenary.
