BOND MEETS WITH FBI IN NEWTON MATTER

The attorney for former Mississippi State quarterback John Bond confirmed that Bond met with the FBI on Tuesday.

Bond is one of two former Mississippi State players who has told ESPN.com that a third former Bulldog, Kenny Rogers, was seeking money last November on behalf of Auburn quarterback Cam Newton's father, Cecil Newton, in exchange for Newton's commitment to Mississippi State. Bill Bell has told ESPN.com that he was also contacted concerning a pay-for-play deal that would have sent Newton to Mississippi State. Bond, Bell and Rogers all played together at Mississippi State in the early 1980s.

"John Bond has been interviewed by a State regulator and by Federal law enforcement. He has fully cooperated with both agencies and has provided them all facts known by him. Due to the ongoing nature of these matters, he cannot comment further about either interview," Bond's attorney, Phil Abernethy, wrote in an e-mail Tuesday.

Both Bond and Bell have already been interviewed by NCAA investigators. Ian Fitzsimmons of ESPN Radio in Dallas reported that Rogers was also meeting with the NCAA on Tuesday. Fitzsimmons interviewed Rogers on his radio show last week, and Rogers said on the show that Cecil Newton wanted between $100,000 and $180,000 for his son to sign with Mississippi State.

Rogers said he didn't know anything about Newton's recruitment to Auburn.

A Footnote (The Link to this is at the top of this thread page): Section 14.01.3.2 "If at any time before or after matriculation in a member institution a student-athlete or any member of his/her family receives or agrees to receive, directly or indirectly, any aid or assistance beyond or in addition to that permitted by the Bylaws of this Conference (except such aid or assistance as such student-athlete may receive from those persons on whom the student is naturally or legally dependent for support), such student- athlete shall be ineligible for competition in any intercollegiate sport within the Conference for the remainder of his/her college career."

From the NCAA Manuel in Section: 10.1 Unethical Conduct

Unethical conduct by a prospective or enrolled student-athlete or a current or former institutional staff member
(e.g., coach, professor, tutor, teaching assistant, student manager, student trainer) may include, but is not limited
to, the following:

(c) Knowing involvement in offering or providing a prospective or an enrolled student-athlete an improper inducement
or extra benefit or improper financial aid;

Violations of 10.1 are enforced as follows:

10.4 Disciplinary Action

Prospective or enrolled student-athletes found in violation of the provisions of this regulation shall be ineligible
for further intercollegiate competition, subject to appeal to the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement for
restoration of eligibility.
