I live in Nashville and have only saw him once....but it was awesome. Years ago, my roommate needed a ride to work at the same time this girl wanted to grab a beer. Conveniently, he waited tables at Santa Fe out by Opryland...which was near one of my favorite hole in the walls....The Longbranch. I dropped my buddy off and went over to meet her. I waited for a bit and we walked in together when she got there. The place was empty as I suspected for the middle of the day. We grabbed a couple of stools at the bar and ordered up some beers. I did notice some guys playing pool and realized they were about the size of tractors. All of them were in overalls and had beards........ginormous human beings. I moved my head to see who was singing because I recognized Working Man Blues...with a slight slur and whoever was doing it was covering it really, really well. Well low and behold it was Merle himself. The bartender gave me a wink and said, "I think he's got a shot at this country thing." Merle played about 5-6 more songs until he was having to use the mic stand for a crutch. We were still the only people in the bar (was the middle of the afternoon) and I went over and shook his hand and thanked him.
