quote:
I went into this on the main board.
Nutt can recruit. He gets in trouble with the "diamonds in the rough" that inevitably drop his classes between 20 and 40.
I guarantee you he will, at best, recruit on par with his efforts at Arkansas.
Read my post from earlier:
His last 6 years at Arkansas he had 6 first rounders, 7 second rounders, and 32 drafted in rounds 1 - 7. That's almost 6 per year, excluding free agents.
That isn't "monumental" but is in the top half of the SEC.
Point being:
1)He can recruit. He just goes after too many "diamonds in the rough" and classes drop between 20 and 40. Most do not pan out.
2)Houston doesn't do more with less. That's a bullshite, cliche catchphrase that in no way whatsoever is backed up by statistical evidence. To the contrary, stats show that he takes more and does less.
In his last 6 years he had the SEC All-Time rushing QB in Matt Jones, a 5,100 APY gentleman by the name of Felix Jones, the SEC's 2nd leading rusher in Darren McFadden, Pro Bowler Shawn Andrews, Pro Bowler Ken Hamlin, Rimington Trophy winner Jonathon Luigs, 32 draft picks, 6 first rounders, on and on and on.....
Yet in that time frame he lost to Vandy twice, had an abysmal road record, a losing record to the top 25, a 4 win season, a 5 win season, and went 1-3 in lower tier bowls, went .500 in the SEC, on and on and on......
(And, no, going to Atlanta twice in 11 fricking years, once thanks to a Bama probation, both trips by tie-breaker, doesn't strike me as amazing.)
And all of that points to the following:
It's not that he can't recruit. It's that he can't coach.
He is a lower tier coaching mind with upper echelon talent. Sometimes the talent outweighs his elementary X's and O's, sometimes it doesn't. Which perfectly explains his inconsistency, .500 ho-hum resume, and inability to take a program to the "next level".
He had the same success at Arkansas with Danny Ford's players and his fresh, new preaching and rah-rah BS that we now see at Old Piss with Coach O's talent and the same ole' catch phrases and feel good seminars.
At the end of the day he is who he is and Ole Miss will soon see what we mean.

He is a great coach and yet a better leader for this football program. Ole Miss loves Houston Nutt. I honestly think Arky fans are getting really jealous with Sneads big interview on ESPN tonight, Nutt doing so awesome last year, being ranked in the top 10, etc.
