The rim rattled and the backboard shook as Demarco Murray crushed home an alley-oop to himself.
Only one word came to mind for Bob Stoops as he stood and witnessed the dunk in the Bishop Gorman gymnasium.
“Wow.”
Stoops knew at that moment he wanted Demarco at OU. But since Murray was just a junior, Stoops couldn’t legally talk to him. So he told the head coach at Bishop Gorman that Demarco had a scholarship offer to Oklahoma and he could play any position he wanted.
Demarco’s decision came down to two teams. OU and USC. On decision day, he reached for the USC hat, picked it up, but put it down, right before it touched his head. Demarco then picked up the OU hat and put it on. He’s been a Sooner legend ever since.
In Demarco’s first game, he scored five touchdowns. No. 7 reaching the end zone became a very familiar sight over the next four years.
So much so, he became the all-time points leader in OU history with 390. His 65 touchdowns were also a school record, along with 6,718 all-purpose yards and a kickoff return average of 27.6.
Demarco lived up to the 5-star rating, and then some. His OU career sits as one of the all-time greats in program history.
Demarco Murray days until kickoff in Norman.
