These qualities are gone from college football (and to a lesser extent basketball). All that's left is money - who will pay a player the most. That's it. And that's all. I didn't watch three Alabama games last year. I don't even remember which three. I just don't care anymore because the games don't mean anything close to the game it used to be - the game I grew up enamored with. Today these sports are almost nothing to me. My money won't be helping any college sport. And, I may be wrong, but I think college football popularity will be damaged by declines in stadium attendance, media viewership, and overall income because there are a lot of fans who feel the same way I do. But - it's just a game - right?

Players getting paid isn’t the problem. Unlimited free agency, no contracts and no salary caps is the problem. Pro sports would be a complete shite show just like college sports without rules in place.

The only way that can happen is to make players employees, unionize and draw up a CBA.

I don’t think that happens under the NCAA. I think major college programs should split from the NCAA, form new leagues and let the NCAA govern programs that want to play under the old rules where student athletes are playing for scholarships.

**Just my 2 cents and it’s not even worth that much.

I don’t know how you get that genie back in the bottle. The NCAA can’t prohibit NIL. And legally any other institution would be on shaky ground as well.

The CBA answer is, I think, the only way out. But administrators hate that and the politics of it are just poisonous.

Thing is, we’re all as fans responsible for how it got here. There are colleges where the game is played by students in front of a few thousand fans. We chose big state schools with big stadiums playing big time games for a reason. We made coaches and administrators and bowl execs very wealthy. And it reaches a point where that’s just not compatible with nothing trickling down to the actual talent.

And it’s also not like this sport’s impurities are showing up for the first time now, either.
