I literally thought I was going crazy. I walked around my house trying to identify the source of this mysterious noise that almost sounds mechanical (to me it sounds like a belt whine on a machine). I walked around my yard and could find nothing as the source. It seemed it was coming from all directions (yet still far away).

BTW, these sound nothing like regular cicadas. These things sound like they are screaming - it's a really high pitched sound and is nothing like I have ever heard before. It sounds like a belt whine or perhaps like a UFO landing. Seriously, it's really weird.

Go to this site, and below the first pic of a cicada is a play button that says "Song Type: Call". Hit the play button and you'll hear what a single cicada sounds like. The constant drone is all of them chorusing. Occasionally you can pick out a single call that isn't quite synced up with the others.
Cicada Call

There is another species that could be mixed in. It looks almost identical, but has a noticeably different sound to help them distinguish between each other for mating. The males are the only ones that sing.

Same w/ me. Arrived in SWArky and looked around for the noise. The high tension wires were shaking in the wind and I assumed it was just an electrical buzz. So wrong.
