17 Reasons Why You Should Stop Enforcing Gender Stereotypes on Your Children
Gender stereotypes have been around for centuries, but that doesn’t mean they should be. Stereotypes can have a harmful effect on individuals and society at large. Here are 17 reasons why you should stop enforcing gender stereotypes on your children.
Encouraging Emotional Expression
Society has long told us that make-up is for girls and assertiveness and emotional repression are for boys. But this perspective is incredibly limiting and closed-minded. By leaving gender stereotypes behind, all kids can feel freer to express themselves both creatively and emotionally.
Promoting Inclusivity and Tolerance
Gender stereotypes can often cause children to bully others who don’t conform to society’s expectations of what a girl or boy should be. By showing our kids that they can express themselves however they wish, they’re less likely to judge others who do the same.
Expanding Career Aspirations

Another damaging consequence of gender stereotypes is the pigeonholing of children into specific career paths and aspirations. Even if a child wants to pursue a job traditionally associated with the opposite sex, they’re often pressured out of it by societal expectations.

Correct.

We need more bullying and shame. Now, bullying can get out of hand, and that should be monitored, but the emphasis on stopping 100% of bullying and shame has led us to where we are. I am happy to have been bullied as a child because it made me who I am and made me happy with who I am.

A long time ago, probably over 10 years ago, I posted something on FB to the effect of transsexual is people who hate stereotypes putting a stereotype on what it "feels like" to be a boy or a girl.

If a boy wants to play house or a girl wants to play ball, well and fine. That doesn’t mean the boy IS a girl or the girl IS a boy.
