They did at my son's school. It was younger than that though. I want to say if they started the 7th grade it started their "sports clock" so to speak, so most of them did it by 6th grade. It helped them in jr high ball but honestly by 9th-10th grade it all balanced out again.

In the Sip you only get 4 years of high school eligibility. Because of this 8th grade is the last year you can hold back without losing a year. Don’t know if it’s like that in other states.
My son has a late birthday and one of the youngest in his class. We wanted to hold him back in kindergarten but teachers said he didn’t need it. He’s in 7th now and is gonna hold back this year, but move to a different school. It’s partly for sports but mostly for maturity.
