yea, the 5lbs had me wondering. He mostly goes on paddling trips that are about 2-3 night overnights, but hiking isn't out of the question either. Good point about the lack of mesh.

If he’s paddling mostly then weight really shouldn’t be an issue. I would think his main concern will be ventilation in the tent. It gets hot here in June as I’m sure he knows. Especially down in the valleys where most of the paddling takes place.

Probably don't need a crazy ultralight tent. I second the post on looking at Sierra Trading Post and Steep & Cheap. Should be able to find a small technical tent
