Can our prayers help people who might be, or probably are, in "purgatory", or "torment"?

I'm saying yes

It's not paradise

But it's also not yet the day of judgement

Atheists are not allowed in this thread, just saying.

Protestant

I believe CS Lewis had some thoughts on this topic, and I'm too lazy and drunk right now to remember specifics

Looks like he did, but…

I used to sit in his favorite reading chair while sipping sherry once a fortnight in the chaplain’s office of Magdalene College. Then we would climb through the window on top of the roof and smoke cigarettes overlooking the master’s house where Rowan Williams (former Archbishop of Canterbury and chaplain to the queen) lived.

Mr Cool. But yeah, I think a lot of students saw me that way.

Guy on left is an Australian filmmaker who even worked for Terrence Malick. You’ll like this paper, he ended up marrying a UofA girl.

You need to do the Off-Topic Board equivalent of an "I was the director of an interdisciplinary graduate research centre, AMA."

HRV I have so many questions.

If prayer does not change God's will but instead changes our hearts, how would this prayer help souls in purgatory? Are we saying that we are praying for their souls to repent before judgement?

If the dead "sleep" until the resurrection and judgment, where are they now (from a Protestant perspective)? If time in this instance does not exist, are they thus both simultaneously asleep and resurrected? Are the believing dead already conscious in God's presence even though the resurrection hasn't happened?

I'm sorry. Sometimes I can't turn my brain off, and these are the types of things I ponder.

An AMA ("Ask Me Anything") happens when someone with a unique perspective comes to the board, introduces themselves in a post, then shares stories and answers the most popular questions submitted by the greater community.

This is a Reddit thing, but I'm saying that you could start a whole post about your experiences overseas and let us ask questions. It sounds pretty fascinating, but I guess the problem is that too much detail could be personally revealing in a way that you wouldn't necessarily want.

Anyway, I would love to hear more, but understand if you don't want to or can't share a whole lot.

It's not. It was made up out of thin air by the Catholic Church.

Waayy too much to quote, but here's a good skim-through I ran across:
