My view is Birmingham biggest problem is and has been it is not the capital city of Alabama. If it was , the state would have supported it much better over the years and it could have developed into a Nashville like city. Given, that Montgomery is a crap hole my advice would be to move the capital to Birmingham, I believe the state wants to build a new capital building.

Birmingham has 3 major problems, and they’re all correlated - crime, poverty, and a poor school system. Moving the capital here would do little to nothing to solve any of those issues. As long as there are are more attractive suburbs in the metro area, Birmingham is always going to have those problems.

Most State Capital cities suck. Look at BR, Tallahassee, Richmond, Columbia, Frankfort and of course Montgomery. I put Atlanta in that group, but I am in the minority with that opinion. All those cities have other cities in their state that are nicer. Might have something to do with the politics of a State Capital.

Mobile, Birmingham, and Montgomery all have the very same problem, and it is not fixable.
