The story is that Kelly heard LSUs offer and bolted immediately. ND negotiations never even happened because Kelly didn't give them the time of day. Just left.

And I want to put trolling aside, honestly he had been at ND for 12 years and rebuilt them and has them consistent year to year now, they hadn't had a period like that since Holtz was there. His rebuild was complete, he could have safely stayed there until his retirement. But as a coach's son, I know so many have insatiable urges to build things, and here came Woodward with a huge contract and the prospect of rebuilding the culture at LSU seeing what the program is capable of and how it's been floundering at .500 the last two years, he just thinks to himself "I can be that guy to build this program into a monster" and well here we are.

I understand why ND fans are mad for the timing of it all and still having a playoff shot and all, but that's mainly due to how the early signing period changed the structure of CFB. Once the smoke settles I think ND fans should and will look at Kelly's tenure and be grateful for what he's done for them. He's the reason Willingham and Weis are far back in the rearview mirror, he's leaving them in such better shape than they were when he took over it isn't even funny.
