Luke Stampini CBd Pappoe to AU this afternoon. He's UF insider but also part of team that does rankings so has some insight into stuff outside of just UF...

Should 2020 standout Kobe Hudson’s commitment date change concern Auburn? (SECCountry)
quote:

Kobe Hudson, one of the best 2020 prospects, was scheduled to make his college decision Friday. Auburn, Alabama and Georgia were the three hats to be on the table, and the Tigers were the expected favorite. As I wrote in the Monday night notebook, there has been a slight adjustment to the timeline.

Hudson will now announce on April 27, two Fridays later.

With Auburn as the heavy favorite, the reaction from the fan base is that this can’t be a good sign for the Tigers. Why would he change his decision date if the wide receiver already knew Auburn was the choice? It’s an understandable response, but don’t be alarmed.

Prior to the April 13 commitment date, Hudson had plans to visit Georgia one more time and to make a spring break trip to Florida State. He hasn’t made either of those visits yet, and he wants to stand by his word to those coaching staffs. Hudson will make a midweek visit to Florida State at some point and will be at Georgia’s spring game on April 21. The Bulldogs likely generate the most concern, but spring games aren’t exactly the best recruiting opportunity for coaches to hone in on one specific recruit, especially six days before an announcement.

On top of that, Auburn has handled this recruitment as well as imaginably possible.

Rodney Garner is the area recruiter for Troup County High School. He recruited Auburn commit Andy Boykin and Alabama commit King Mwikuta. Garner hasn’t been the point man for Hudson, however. That has been the duty of Gus Malzahn, which isn’t a common occurrence in the recruiting world for any head coach.

Whenever a head coach prioritizes a recruit — or in this case becomes the de facto lead recruiter — it’s proof of that prospect’s importance. Hudson is as high on the Auburn board as any other recruit, regardless of position, in the entire 2020 class.

Hudson wants his recruitment out of the way before he starts spring practice his junior season. Auburn wants Hudson to be the focal point and vocal leader of the 2020 class. It’s a perfect match that, most likely, will simply be pushed back 14 days.

New Auburn commit Jakai Clark goes in-depth on 3-day whirlwind that led to pledge (SECCountry)
quote:

Why Jakai Clark committed to Auburn so quickly

AUBURN, Ala. — Jakai Clark knew it was coming.

Truth be told, he’d known for 72 hours.

When he stepped in Gus Malzahn’s office on Saturday, the Auburn coach gave him the news he’d been waiting for since he visited the Plains for the Auburn-Ole Miss game as a ninth-grader. Malzahn told Clark he’d been offered by the Tigers. That’s really when Clark knew.

But Auburn coaches wisely told Clark to return mid-week with his mother who wasn’t at A-Day so she could get the full experience. As Clark puts it, she’s the shot-caller. Once she gave him the go-ahead, Clark turned from Auburn target to Auburn commit.

“That was real important. Getting my mom out here, you know, my mom, she’s the one that’s going to OK everything. The fact that she loved it, my dad loved it, I loved it, it just makes it better,” Clark said. “That’s what brought to me committing.”

It has been a three-day whirlwind for Clark.

He entered A-Day without an Auburn offer. Clark had interest in the likes of Boston College, Syracuse and Temple. But the Tigers offer? That was different.

He’d been to the Plains twice before and knew what to expect from Auburn. Clark visited as a high school freshman for an Ole Miss game. Before Saturday, he’d been on the Plains most recently for the Iron Bowl last fall, so Clark has a full understanding of the Auburn game-day experience.

Still, it’s all been a fast turnaround for the center from Grayson High School in Loganville, Ga.

“It’s been crazy. I can say that. I don’t really know how to describe that. I’m kinda at a loss for words right now. It’s just been happening real fast,” Clark said. “Obviously I was very excited about getting the Auburn offer. Auburn’s a great school, a great university, so as soon as I got the offer, everything was on my mind that this was the place. Obviously today I committed.”

On Tuesday, the 6-foot-3, 315-pound lineman spent most of his time with area recruiter Travis Williams.

He took a campus tour to see the dorms and the business school. Both of those received A-plus reactions from Clark and his family. He spent some time talking with coaches about the commitment plan, which was met with excitement from the Tigers coaching staff.

If there were any doubts about Auburn — which it’s quite clear there weren’t — they were put to rest immediately on the Tuesday visit.

“It’s just the will to win pretty much. They have great coaches, great players. I feel everybody here works together. Everybody is a family. Everybody wants to win. I want to be part of a winning program like that,” Clark said.

Here’s how Clark described the two Auburn coaches who recruited him:

Offensive line coach J.B. Grimes: “He’s a great teacher, I know that. When I talk to some of the players, all of them love him. He’s a great guy, great personality. He’s been coaching for a while, so I know he knows what he’s doing. I trust him with my development as a player.”

Area recruiter Travis Williams: “T-Will is like an uncle. A lot of the players at our school and a lot of the players I have talked to that he recruits, they all call him uncle. He’s going to look out for you. He’s going to make sure he’s there if you need something. That’s pretty much how he’s able to connect with a lot of these guys because some of them don’t have dads. He’s like that dad they’ve never had.”

2 top interior offensive linemen visiting Auburn

Auburn landed an interior offensive line target in Jakai Clark. He wasn’t the only top target on campus, however. In fact, there were two: Clay Webb and Keiondre Jones, the top two players on Auburn’s board.

Webb, the top offensive 5-star on Auburn’s board, is the only center the Tigers had been recruiting until Clark. This should go without saying, but Clark’s commitment doesn’t change anything for Webb. He’s still a top priority for the Tigers, who think Webb can play center or guard. Webb has said he still plans to make his decision in December. He was hosted on Tuesday by offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey, running backs coach Tim Horton and wide receivers coach Kodi Burns.

Jones has made three Auburn visits in four weeks. He’s also taken a trip to Florida in that span, which is the likely the biggest threat since his cousin, quarterback Emory Jones, signed there in December. He has a relationship with Clark, who committed while Jones was on his visit. The two exchanged Twitter congratulations and thank yous following the announcement.

Both Webb and Jones checked out Auburn’s spring practice on Tuesday.

Rankings update: The Opening Atlanta (247)
quote:

After extensive film review, internal debate and reflection following The Opening Atlanta Regional from late March, 247Sports has made a number of necessary rankings moves from what was the most talent-packed event of the year to date. With several other loaded events taking place recently, more rankings moves are likely to follow this week. For now, here’s the Atlanta returns.

Nolan Smith (FL), WDE, Georgia commit – Smith’s freakish performance not only testing (at 6-3, 232 pounds, he ran a 4.51 in sub 40-degree weather) but during 1on1s has drawn Von Miller and Khalil Mack comparisons. The 3-4 OLB moves up from No. 3 in the country to No. 2 overall.

Visited AU back in February but AU longshot to flip. Keep an eye on Bama or Clemson tho

Jadon Haselwood (GA), WR, Georgia commit – If he hadn’t earned the bump at The Opening, he would have earned it at the Adidas 7on7 national championships two weeks later. The five-star bump was inevitable and now he’s gotten it after showcasing rare size, and downfield playmaking ability.

AU/OK think he's flippable. UGA does not

Nakobe Dean (MS), ILB, uncommitted – The only thing Dean is missing is length. At 6-foot, he’s shown us everything else. He tested really well, showed pass-rush ability with power and dip-and-lean ability, showed special awareness in coverage and he’s extremely intelligent. Then you turn on the film and the guy is a straight head-hunter. He’s moved up into the top 20 with a 97 rating.

AU continues to be mentioned in his top group but feels like we are #3 at best behind Bama & LSU. UGA a darkhorse

Kevin Harris (GA), WDE, uncommitted – One of the best speed rushers we’ve seen all year, Harris’ film checks out and he actually brings some physicality beyond just the edge speed. With Alabama, LSU, Miami, Clemson and others chasing, he moves into the Top100.

Harry Miller (GA), C, uncommitted – Miller was a brawler and dominated the camp but his film shows the same kind of physicality. We didn’t make any dramatic moves with his ranking but his rating has been punched up to a 95 from a 94 which projects him to stick inside the Top100 by Signing Day. Ohio State could be the team to beat.

Might be my favorite OL in this class

George Pickens (AL), WR, Auburn commit – Though his testing numbers were just OK, Pickens sure played fast and his size creates huge matchup issues. Aside from Haselwood nobody was a more dominant downfield threat and his new ranking inside the Top 75 reflects that.

Jaydon Hill (AL), CB, uncommitted – One of the real revelations of the event, Hill jumps up from a three-star to a Top150 level recruit. We think he has a chance to continue to be a riser through the process. South Carolina is the early favorite.

Kinda surprised to see him ranked this high but must have been real impressive at event

The quarterbacks – Auburn commit Bo Nix had one of the steadier camp performances we’ve seen to date. Wisconsin quarterback commit Graham Mertz probably had the most upside of any quarterback at the Atlanta event but Sam Howell’s film remains our favorite from Atlanta. Taulia Tagovailoa has dipped down some in the rankings (142) and Nix (177) and Mertz (193) have both moved up to get all three in a much closer vicinity.

Somehow they still have Taulia ahead of Nix....
