Wiltfong says Jaylin Simpson just needs to get his parents on campus before publicly committing to AU. Source told him that when AU can get parents on campus face to face with Steele and Gus they fall in love with them

Also says Jashawn Sheffield would like to take OVs but could commit soon to AU anyway. Liked AUs vision for him on offense and could also play safety (FWIW KN seems to think he will be a safety)

Wiltfong says CB still on UGA for Pappoe but not counting AU out. His relationship with T-WILL is big and Pappoe sees bigger need at AU. Says getting Pappoe would really help with Wanya Morris

Finally, AU a top contender for 4* CB Andrew Booth. Clemson team to beat

Catching up on all the updates missed this week. Lots of post incoming....

TE target Tyler Fromm, brother of Georgia QB Jake Fromm, outlines last 2 Auburn visits
quote:

Brother of SEC quarterback outlines Auburn visits

AUBURN, Ala. — Tyler Fromm knows what the narrative will be around his recruitment.

He’s the younger brother of Georgia sophomore quarterback Jake Fromm. The younger Fromm, a rising 2019 tight end, has seen the recruiting process happen before with his brother. He knows it will be rare (this post is guilty of it) for his name to be mentioned separately from his brother’s.

But Tyler also knows his situation won’t be much like his brother. Jake was committed — technically twice — by March 2016. It wasn’t until late December and early spring that Tyler’s recruitment really started to take off. Jake was a top-50 prospect early on his recruitment and stayed that way. Tyler ranks No. 929 right now and will have to work his way up those recruiting rankings, which he’ll likely do.

Tyler won’t pay attention to those differences, however. He’ll focus on the here and now — and the fact his recruitment is taking off when he wasn’t sure if it would.

“It’s a blessing to have this happen to me. I didn’t think it would happen like this. It kinda just came out of nowhere. Really, shoot, after South Carolina offered in the middle of December. After that, it took about a month and a half before it really took off from there,” Fromm told SEC Country. “We haven’t really narrowed down everything, but the recruitment has really blown up. It’s still just searching for the right place for me.”

Fromm has landed offers from South Carolina, Wake Forest, Maryland, Colorado State, Southern Cal, Florida, Ole Miss and Auburn since December.

He’s started the visit tour this spring with a trio of SEC schools.

Fromm has visited South Carolina twice and Florida once. He’s been to Auburn twice in the last month. Fromm visited once with his family for a junior day at the beginning of March. He returned solo on Friday to spend some personal time with Tigers coaches Gus Malzahn, Chip Lindsey and Larry Porter.

The growing relationship between Fromm and Auburn coaches is a strong one.

“Just wanted to talk to the coaches again. We just talked ball and everything. The coaches really liked me. I like them a lot. I just really enjoy being around them,” Fromm said. “They just need a guy to throw to. The thing they’ve been making clear to me is just they don’t have too many guys recently who they could do that with. That’s pretty much it. They just need someone like me.”

Fromm isn’t rushing toward a decision.

He wants to wait it out a little bit to see if any other programs plan to offer him. Fromm has communicated with a few others. He also wants to make more return visits to the places he has already been, including Auburn.

This will be a patient decision for the 6-foot-4 tight end.

“I don’t want to just get it out of the way and make the wrong decision. I’ll wait until the right time when I’m ready to commit,” he said.

Breaking down Auburn’s tight end recruiting situation

As I’ve written in the past, here are the four tight ends Auburn has keyed in on so far this spring:

Jackson Lowe, Cartersville, Ga.
Luke Deal, Greenwood, S.C.
Tyler Fromm, Warner Robins, Ga.
Sean Brown, Rome, Ga.

There’s a lot of overlap among programs chasing these four. Auburn had all three at or near the top of its board, but similar things can be said for Tennessee and Clemson. That has created a looming domino effect at tight end in the 2019 class.

The first domino fell on Friday when Lowe committed to Tennessee.

That would seem like positive news for Auburn since Tennessee is also at the top for Brown. But the Volunteers plan to take two tight ends in the 2019 class, a source told SEC Country, which leaves a spot open for Brown if he’s interested. This is an Auburn-Tennessee battle, and Brown set a date shortly after Lowe’s announcement. Brown will make his decision May 12. Expect to see both programs recruit Brown hard the next month.

Fromm’s full update is written above, and he’s likely to make his decision after Brown and Deal.

Deal is the interesting one here because he’s long been tabbed to land in Clemson’s class. He’s from South Carolina, so those Tigers will be in it until the end. Auburn will try to stay involved. Deal visited the Plains once already this spring, and he plans to be back. He’s likely taking his official visits during the spring. Auburn will receive one of those, a source confirmed to SEC Country.

It could be a busy few months for those tight ends — and the programs recruiting them.

I really want Deal

Auburn cracks several top schools lists

It’s the time of year when top prospects start, at the very least, narrowing down their top options.

Most prospects recruited by a place like Auburn hold offers from dozens of programs across the country. Creating top schools lists to hone in on certain programs has become a common practice. The springtime is the typical time to publicly announce those schools still strongly in consideration.

These lists don’t always hold up. Take 5-star linebacker Owen Pappoe, for instance, who has Auburn as his No. 2 school now after not putting the Tigers in his original top 3. But it’s a strong indication of where a recruit’s mind is at. It’s not always worth a separate story — though SEC Country had a full breakdown of running back John Emery’s top-list interest — so here’s an opportunity to lay out five newly-announced top groups that included Auburn.

Four are from the 2019 class and one is from the 2020 cycle.

RB John Emery, top 8: Auburn, LSU, Florida, Michigan, Georgia, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Southern Cal.

WR Ramel Keyton, top 6: Ohio State, Miami, Penn State, Tennessee, Auburn and Ole Miss.

WR Devonta Lee, top 12: Auburn, Miami, Ohio State, Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M, Arkansas, Tennessee, LSU, Georgia, Florida and Florida State.

OL Amari Kight, top 10: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

2020 DT Jamil Burroughs, top 6: Georgia, Clemson, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama and Auburn.

Here’s how I’d rank Auburn’s chances with the four 2019 prospects, from mostly likely to least likely: Emery, Kight, Keyton and Lee.

Kinda surprised to see Kight listed as more likely than Keyton

Auburn LB target commits to Texas, but Tigers won’t quit

De’Gabriel Floyd is a bit of an unknown among the Auburn fan base. He’s a big deal nationally, however.

The 4-star LB from Westlake Village, Calif., has earned more than two dozen offers from programs across the country. In early March, the 6-foot-2, 220-pound prospect named a top 7 of Auburn, Oregon, UCLA, Georgia, Florida, Arizona State and Texas. Floyd committed to the Longhorns on Saturday, expediting his process much sooner than expected.

Auburn viewed Floyd as a long shot, but I’m also told the Tigers won’t give up on the nation’s No. 4 linebacker just because of his commitment.

One source told me Floyd’s sister who attends college in Alabama recently swung by the Auburn athletics complex for her own personal visit. It was a fact-finding mission and a chance for at least one member of the Floyd family to report back on what the program had to offer. That shows there is at least some deeper interest from Floyd than simply putting the Tigers on his list.

Since Floyd committed, I’ve been told Auburn still plans to get him on campus for a visit. It wouldn’t be surprising to see linebackers coach Travis Williams to head out west when coaches are allowed to make off-campus visits. Again, this is a long shot, but it’s still something Auburn will work on before it feels its chances are completely exhausted.

Defensive line near top of Auburn’s priority list in Class of 2019 (SECCountry)
quote:

Before I dive into this specific angle to the question, let me share a few articles I’ve already written about the defensive line this spring.

For a look at the Buck/defensive end picture, check out this full breakdown from a month ago. For an idea on the defensive tackle situation, look at my examination from last month of the soon-to-be vacancies at the position and how the Tigers plan to fill them. Lastly, here’s a question of the day I answered in January about what size of D-line class Auburn fans should expect in the 2019 cycle.

This Monday question of the day ties in with the question from January.

In that previous article, some of the number was contingent on how Auburn closed down the 2018 class. I listed three prospects — Caleb Tannor, Malik Langham and Caleb Johnson — and said if Auburn landed two of that group, the Tigers wouldn’t look for as big of a 2019 haul at defensive line. If Tannor picked Auburn, it would’ve lessened the need for a 2019 pass rusher. If Langham chose the Tigers, there wouldn’t have been as much need for a defensive end/tackle hybrid type player.

Instead, only Johnson committed to Auburn to finish out the 2018 cycle.

That increased expectations for the 2019 haul.

The key factor with this position is the belief that several prospects will leave after this 2018 football season. Andrew Williams and Dontavius Russell, as seniors, will be gone after this season. Any or all of Derrick Brown, Marlon Davidson and Nick Coe will be eligible to leave — and likely will draw some NFL interest. There’s also the reality that a guy such as TD Moultry could leave after the 2019 season given his NFL upside.

Auburn can’t wait to see who, if any, will depart. The Tigers need to be proactiv
e.

That’s why I think they’ll take a big defensive line class regardless of who ultimately leaves early. But with the high-ranked overhaul of prospects such as Brown and Davidson, the emphasis won’t just be on numbers. It’ll be on top-tier linemen.

Rising LB star Kalen Deloach wants to take more personalized visit to Auburn (SECCountry)
quote:

Rising LB star wants to return to Auburn for 1-on-1 time

Kalen Deloach is the top linebacker on several colleges’ wish lists.

The Islands (Ga.) prospect has been one of, if not the top linebacker priority for programs this spring. Deloach has taken visits to Auburn, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, Clemson, South Carolina and Tennessee. He plans to take another spring visit to Florida State before relaxing a little. The spring included a dozen offers and a Nike Opening invite after his standout Atlanta regional performance.

His relationship with Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele will be the biggest factor playing in the Tigers’ favor.

Steele was the first coach to reach out to Deloach following his Opening performance. He’s been a coach who went to see him earlier this spring and has stayed consistent with his interest and message to the Savannah, Ga., linebacker.

“As a matter of fact, Coach Steele just texted me earlier today,” Deloach said. “He’s a great coach so far. He’s a great man. He treats me well. I like that.”

Deloach named Auburn as one of the programs recruiting him the hardest, mostly by Steele. The schools he mentioned were Alabama, Michigan and Tennesee. Expect that list to grow throughout the spring as more places start to realize Deloach is much more than the 33rd-ranked overall linebacker in the 2019 class, as he’s listed in the 247Sports composite.

The one knock against Auburn (if it can really be called that) is the circumstance of his first visit — and the fact it’s been his only one.

Deloach visited the Plains for a junior day earlier this spring. He received more attention than most from Steele and linebackers coach Travis Williams, but those types of events always take away from personalized attention for specific recruits. There’s a mutual communication between Auburn’s staff and Deloach that he needs to return soon for an X’s and O’s-type visit with the Tigers.

“I do plan to go back up there for 1-on-1 time,” Deloach said. “They just want me to get back on campus for some 1-on-1 time. We want to break down what position I’d be playing if I went down there and how they’d want to use me.”

Deloach plans to be thorough and calculated with his decision.

He will visit places he feels he needs to see before narrowing his choices. From there, he wants to cut his list to a top 5 to focus on during his senior season. Those five schools will be the ones where he takes official visits. Deloach hasn’t designated any schools as guaranteed official visit spots yet.

Want badly

Another top school list for Auburn: in-state CB

In my Sunday night notebook, I listed a few top schools lists where Auburn made the cut. Running back John Emery, wide receiver Ramel Keyton, wide receiver Devonta Lee and offensive lineman Amari Kight were the 2019 targets to watch. The article published just before another top list was announced — that of in-state cornerback Cordale Flott.

Flott is one of the most noteworthy of the bunch given the mutual interest between the Saraland (Ala.) prospect and Auburn. His top group went as follows, in no particular order: Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Oregon, Ole Miss, Louisville, Mississippi State, Arkansas and Southern Miss.

He has taken two visits to Auburn this spring. On Saturday, he’ll make a return visit to Tuscaloosa to see Alabama. The two in-state programs will be the runaway favorites to land the 6-foot-2 cornerback.

On a scale of 1-10, Flott told SEC Country his interest in both of those programs was a 9. He’s not ruling out other schools receiving a similar mark, but that’s where he’s at with Auburn and Alabama.

I’ve spoken with a few of my sources about the status of Auburn’s cornerback recruiting, and here’s what I’ve gathered.

In the 2018 class, Auburn honed in on in-state cornerbacks. The Tigers nabbed Christian Tutt from Thomson, Ga., but down the stretch their focus was on Alabama products such as Roger McCreary and Cam Taylor. Auburn is opening up its territory a little more in the 2019 class with offers out to guys such as Devin Bush, Marcus Banks, Kaiir Elam, Raydarious Jones and several others.

But there’s still a desire to land at least one of the two big in-state cornerbacks. That would be Flott or Daphne cornerback Christian Williams.

Flott and Williams have both visited this spring, but Flott has made two trips to the Plains. With Williams growing up an Alabama fan, the Tigers might see Flott as the more realistic option of the two.

Most popular question: when is commitment coming?

Whenever there’s a lull in recruiting (or at least commitment) action, fans start to get antsy.

The question I most often get: When is someone going to commit again?

The Tigers haven’t landed a commitment since Jan. 10, when Bo Nix jumped on board. Auburn hoped that would spur some recruiting momentum. On the surface, it wouldn’t suggest much of an effect because nobody has committed to Auburn since then. But if you dive deeper into it, you’ll notice many prospects in Alabama and Georgia taking note of the presence of Nix and George Pickens in the class — two guys at championship programs in Alabama who have excelled with a lot of Georgia guys in the Cam Newton 7v7 circuit.

So no, there haven’t been commitments, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a buzz.

With spring practices wrapping up at the college level, high schools are about to kick off their schedule. College coaches will be out on the road doing their early spring evaluations, which will give places such as Auburn a better idea of who they truly want its top targets to be. I’ve been told by a few people that by the end of April, they’d expect Auburn to double their current commitment total.

On top of that, there’s likely to be a 2020 addition between now and then, too.

So stay patient, Auburn fans. The commitments always come. It’s just a matter of time.

How realistic are Auburn’s chances for IMG Academy running back Noah Cain? (SECCountry)
quote:

A running back question of the day last week focused on Destrehan, La., prospect John Emery — one of Auburn’s top two targets at the position. So it’s only fitting a question this week addresses the other top running back target on Auburn’s board.

That’s IMG Academy (Fla.) standout Noah Cain.

Cain is a top target for several programs across the country, including Texas, Ohio State, LSU and Georgia. He has taken his fair share of spring visits to get a feel for each of his potential destinations.

Perhaps the most noteworthy portion of his visit to Auburn was the relationship he built with quarterback commit Bo Nix. Cain and his father referenced the strong bond with Nix.

Here’s what he had to say about Auburn following his trip to the Plains:

“They surpassed expectations,” Cain said. “All the running backs they put in the league is big for me. Actually they’re the best school at putting running backs in the league; 38 running backs is the most out of any school in FBS. They embraced me this weekend and showed a lot of love. … Just seeing the future of us [Cain and Nix] possibly playing together at Auburn, that’s big. Like Coach [Gus] Malzahn said, if everything goes in their favor, we could be the top recruiting class in the country.”

But Cain has taken visits to several other top schools. There’s more external buzz right now around LSU, Texas and Ohio State. The key for Auburn will be the possibility of a return trip to the Plains. Cain said after his visit to Auburn he’d be back later in the spring or summer, at the latest.

If he returns in the near future, it’s something to watch. One thing that’s quite interesting, to me at least: Cain’s mother, who wasn’t with him and his father on the most recent visit, will make a solo trip to the Plains on Thursday. That’s according to Cain. I’m not big into reading tea leaves to determine college choices, but that has to be a fairly promising sign for the Tigers.

Cain told SEC Country he doesn’t have a return visit set, but he hopes to make it back soon. Surely mom’s impression of the place will have a persuasive role.

Top in-state defensive lineman DJ Dale’s relationship with Rodney Garner will drive Auburn’s chances (SECCountry)
quote:

Top in-state DL breaks down Auburn interest

Among the top-15 ranked players in Alabama, there will be several Auburn-Alabama recruiting battles.

It’s been a well-established competition with 5-star guard Clay Webb. Those two in-state programs will fight it out similarly for prospects such as offensive lineman Amari Kight, cornerback Christian Williams and linebacker Vonta Bentley.

Perhaps the most competitive battle will be for defensive tackle DJ Dale — and it won’t only be Alabama and Auburn fighting.

Dale visited Auburn for a junior day earlier this spring and received rave reviews from the Tigers coaching staff. He’s been to Alabama on multiple occasions. But Dale is checking out as many programs as possible. He has been to Florida State and Tennessee, as well.

According to the 6-foot-2, 33o-pound defensive tackle, it’s not a foregone conclusion he’ll stay in the Yellowhammer State.

“It’s not necessarily going to be Alabama or Auburn. It’s going to be wherever I have the best relationship with the coaches,” Dale told SEC Country.

With that said, both of the in-state schools have strong relationships with the 4-star prospect.

His bond with Auburn defensive line coach Rodney Garner has blossomed this spring. Garner told Dale at junior day that his active hands and big frame reminded him of Derrick Brown. The message from Garner to Dale has been consistent since that visit. Dale is aiming to be on the Plains for the spring game this weekend.

“The atmosphere and the coaches stand out at Auburn. Coach Garner, he reminds me a lot of my coach I have right now in high school. He keeps telling me to enjoy the process. He loves my film, said I use my hands really well,” Dale said. “I don’t have any top schools right now, but both of the in-state schools are coming after it.”

Dale is staying patient with his approach.

In fact, he said he doesn’t see himself have a final decision by the end of summer, even though he expects to have taken several college visits by then.

“I don’t think I’ll have it before my senior season. I might commit during the season,” Dale said. “I might wait it out.”

Interesting visit tidbit on RB target Noah Cain

I mentioned this briefly in my Auburn recruiting question of the day from earlier Tuesday. It’s worth highlighting in a little more detail in the notebook.

Noah Cain is one of Auburn’s top two running back targets in the 2019 class.

There’s a cautious optimism on the Plains because there’s a strong relationship there between Cain and Auburn coaches — namely Tim Horton — but Cain also has taken spring visits to the top programs in the country, including Texas, Ohio State, Georgia and LSU. Auburn staff feels the chances to sign Cain are somewhat increased because of his relationship with quarterback commit Bo Nix. Also, former Tigers legend Carnell Williams is a running backs coach at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., where Cain is playing his senior season.

But there won’t be any strong sense of confidence until Cain returns to Auburn.

He hasn’t set anything up yet, but his mother has.

Cain’s mother didn’t join the star running back and his father on the junior day visit earlier this year. She will visit the Plains on Thursday to meet with coaches and staff members, as well as check out Auburn’s final spring practice before A-Day. It’ll be important to get Cain back on campus, but the fact his mother is making a mid-week visit suggests some fairly serious interest from Cain and his family.
