Auburn recruiting Buford (Ga.) RB hardest

As we’ve written in the past, Auburn will hone in on John Emery and Noah Cain among the top running backs in the country.

But there’s another 4-star running back who the Tigers are chasing.

Buford (Ga.) running back Derrian Brown told SEC Country that Auburn is recruiting him the hardest out of all the schools involved in his recruitment. That doesn’t mean the Tigers are the favorite to land them, however. The Tigers are in a good position, but other programs — especially Tennessee — are the most likely foes to Auburn.

Brown is the No. 12-ranked back in the nation and the No. 186 overall prospect.

He holds offers from Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State and others.

Opinion: Bo Nix-to-George Pickens connection special

This goes away from my typical intel-driven content to give you my stance on Auburn commits Bo Nix and George Pickens.

Nix is the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the nation. He lived up to his expectations on Sunday with the first back-to-back QB MVP performance. Nix dropped slightly in recent rankings releases, but upon the next re-rank, I fully expect Nix to move up closer to the 5-star brink. The quarterback talent is down in 2019, but Nix’s performances — undefeated state championship season and standout showcase camps — are worth 5-star consideration.

He’s a quarterback in every sense. On Sunday, it didn’t matter if he was working with a lesser-known prospect or one of his go-to targets in Pickens or Georgia commit Jadon Haselwood; Nix was actively communicating with his receivers in between reps.

As for Pickens, the No. 26-ranked receiver in the nation won’t have 25 receivers rated ahead of him for long.

Pickens rivaled Miami commit Jermaine Burton and Georgia commits Haselwood and Dominick Blaylock for the best receivers on the day. He will see a major rankings rise next time around with his on-field production at Hoover (Ala.) and his promising camp and 7-on-7 showings.

I’ll have more on the relationship between these two guys later in the week. Auburn’s couldn’t have a much better tandem as the foundation of the class.

Can Auburn fight off other SEC schools for top WR commit George Pickens? (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn wide receiver commit George Pickens may have risen his stock this weekend more than any other 2019 prospect.

The 4-star wide receiver from Hoover, Ala., came into the Atlanta Opening regional weekend as the No. 26-ranked receiver, according to the 247Sports composite. If people thought there were 25 better receivers than Pickens coming into the weekend, that likely changed quickly when they saw Pickens on Sunday at Buford High School.

Pickens competed against a few of the nation’s best wide receivers, namely Georgia commit Jadon Haselwood and Miami commit Jermaine Burton. He more than held his own with his highlight-reel tendencies.

That comes with some repercussions for Auburn, however.

When Pickens committed to the Tigers last summer, they were the only top-tier program to have offered. In recent months, Georgia, LSU, Florida and others have quickly gotten in on the Pickens sweepstakes.

I spoke with Pickens on Sunday afternoon, and he said he’s still “very firm” to Auburn.

As of right now, it’s the three aforementioned programs — Georgia, LSU and Florida — who are making the hardest push outside of Auburn. Pickens already has taken a few visits, most recently to Georgia, and he expects to make regular visits to multiple schools between now and December. Pickens expects to sign during the early signing period, so Auburn only needs to hold other schools off for eight months.

The big factor helping Auburn is quarterback commit Bo Nix.

Pickens and Nix have a unique relationship, and it showed on Sunday at the Opening. Auburn’s two commits have been playing 7-on-7 together this spring. A special bond has formed. The two hung out for a while following the Sunday event and clearly want to play together at the next level.

As of right now, I really like Auburn’s chances of holding onto its top wide receiver in the class.

5-star LB Nakobe Dean explains what made him ‘fall in love’ with Auburn (SECCountry)
quote:

5-star linebacker calls Auburn his most surprising visit

ATLANTA — Nakobe Dean has a go-to word when he describes Auburn: surprising.

The 5-star linebacker from Horn Lake, Miss., made an overnight trip to the Plains earlier this spring with high school teammate Raydarious Jones. Coming into the visit, Dean admitted he simply wanted to check out a school he hadn’t been to before. His tune changed drastically following the visit.

And he continues to have that special feeling about Auburn.

“Auburn, definitely Auburn [was the school that surprised me]. I went on a visit, and they showed me something different, how laid back they are and everything. I’ve built a good relationship with the coaches there. Auburn was definitely the surprising one,” Dean said. “They really impressed me. What really impressed me is I didn’t expect to fall in love with Auburn like I did.”

Dean’s initial communication went through area recruiter Marcus Woodson. He has since developed a similarly strong bond with Auburn linebackers coach Travis Williams. Dean hears from one of the two on an every-other-day basis.

Those interactions will keep the Tigers in until the end — which likely will last until after Dean’s senior season. He plans to sign during the early signing period.

“The people. It was the people. They really interested me how they acted, how laid back they were. I like how it would be,” Dean said. “They’re basically telling me how much they love me, how good I’d fit in their defense. But it’s not only how good I fit in their defense, but how good of a person I could leave Auburn being.”

Officially, Dean is down to a top-15 list. Georgia, Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Stanford are the programs to keep the closest eye on.

Within the next month or so, he plans to narrow the list down, if he can.

Auburn is likely to crack that list, and he “definitely” wants to be back on the Plains in the near future.

As of right now: “They’re one of 15,” he said.

I feel like the theme of this recruiting cycle is recruits realizing that Auburn doesn't suck

Son of former NFL standout recaps Auburn visit

Kaiir Elam comes from an NFL family.

His father, Abe Elam, played for the Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, New York Jets and Cleveland Browns after his college career at Notre Dame. Elam’s uncle, Matt Elam, was a standout at Florida before moving on to the league.

The youngest is now in the spotlight with offers from Auburn, Georgia, Florida, Clemson, N.C. State, Miami, Michigan and others. Elam made a recent Southeast round trip to Auburn, Georgia, N.C. State and Clemson.

His Auburn visit overlapped with a practice during which he recorded multiple pages of notes on a notepad.

“I was taking notes, trying to get better, seeing what college guys do and try to implement it into my game. I’m just trying to be a student of the game,” Elam said. “I thought it was pretty cool, better than I expected. Nice facilities.”

Elam isn’t in a rush to make a decision, but he isn’t setting any kind of timetable.

He said he could narrow his choices in the coming months, or he could just commit at any given point. Elam said he’d “definitely” return to the Plains before making a final decision.

If Auburn has one thing in its favor, it’s how the coaches treated him on his initial trip.

“Just the coaches. The coaches were real. They weren’t artificial. They only told me the truth,” Elam said.

Auburn reassigns assistant coach recruiting territories

Auburn didn’t have much coaching change this offseason, but it was enough to adjust the recruiting territories. The Tigers flipped Herb Hand for J.B. Grimes, who is familiar recruiting on Auburn’s behalf. They added 10th assistant coach Marcus Woodson, who has strong ties to a few previous destinations.

Here is how Auburn plans to split up the Southeast for recruiting purposes in the 2019 class.

Auburn QB commit Bo Nix invited to prestigious Elite 11 competition (SECCountry)
quote:

Bo Nix is one step closer to yet another accomplishment.

The Auburn quarterback commitment from Pinson, Ala., has achieved plenty in the last year. He’s won two quarterback MVP awards at the Atlanta Opening regional, the first ever to win back-to-back honors. Nix helped his Pinson Valley (Ala.) squad to an undefeated state championship season and he’s already listed as the No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the nation by the 247Sports composite.

Now he’ll have an opportunity this summer to prove himself against the nation’s top quarterbacks.

Nix received the fourth invitation to the Elite 11 quarterback competition, which will take place at the Nike World Headquarters in Oregon in June. Nix joins Oklahoma commit Spencer Rattler, uncommitted Grant Gunnell and uncommitted Ryan Hilinski as current invitees.

Nix won’t be the first Auburn quarterback to participate in the Elite 11 competition. The top 24 are invited out for the competition, and the top 11 qualify for the finals.

Here’s a look at other Tigers signal-callers who participated in the event.

Neil Caudle, 2005
Kiehl Frazier, 2010
Zeke Pike, 2011
Sean White, 2013 (named Elite 11 MVP)
Jarrett Stidham, 2014
Woody Barrett, 2015
Joey Gatewood, 2017

That Elite 11 alumni list isn't exactly inspiring....

Auburn commit George Pickens describes firmness of pledge, programs trying to flip him (SECCountry)
quote:

BUFORD, Ga. — George Pickens has been committed to Auburn since August.

When the 4-star wide receiver from Hoover (Ala.) High School made his commitment, he was just starting to scratch the surface of national recognition. Pickens is full-blown recognized at this point. He remains the No. 26 wide receiver in the nation, but his stock will rise rapidly following his spring 7-on-7 and showcase camp performances.

Pickens has caught the attention of a several SEC schools, including Georgia and LSU.

He’s standing strong with his Auburn commitment, however.

“Oh, it’s very firm right now,” Pickens said. “I still look at other colleges just to view the experience, but that’s pretty much it.”

It’s not an easy thing to communicate through written text, but Pickens put an extra emphasis on the words very firm in the previous quote.

He’s open to taking visits elsewhere. It’s something he didn’t do much before committing to Auburn. Pickens has visited Georgia twice so far, but his communication with LSU is just beginning, though he hears from those Tigers on a regular basis now.

The Bulldogs are likely the most potent threat right now. But they already have two wide receivers committed in this class, including Jadon Haselwood, who Auburn is similarly trying to flip from Georgia.

“It’s a very good relationship with Georgia. I have a very good relationship with Coach [Cortez] Hankton. He moved from Vanderbilt. That’s about it. And [Kirby] Smart. Smart, too,” Pickens said. “I’ve visited two times. Those were great experiences. My first time, we were talking to Smart, and then we went down to go eat. All I can remember is that the food was very good in Athens.”

LSU has some work to do — like getting Pickens on campus — before it can become a serious contender. Still, it’s one of the few schools Pickens openly mentioned outside of Auburn.

“We just started communicating. When we did, they broke it down and what they would do to provide for me,” Pickens said. “I plan on getting down there for a visit sometime this spring.”

Anytime a top target takes visits elsewhere, it’s an attention grabber. If and when Pickens shows mutual interest with Alabama, it’ll become particularly interesting.

But there’s a special connection between Pickens and Auburn quarterback commit Bo Nix that should help the Tigers in a major way. Nix and Pickens play for the same 7-on-7 team, so they’re playing with each other at least every other weekend. During the Atlanta Opening regional on Sunday, the two were hip-to-hip after every rep, designing ways to beat some of the Southeast’s top defensive backs. After the camp, it was more of the same.

That’s perhaps the most revealing way to describe how firm Pickens’ commitment to Auburn is — the way he talks about building the Tigers’ class with Nix.

“We always talk about trying to get the guys we hang with the most, like Jadon [Haselwood], people on our 7-on-7 team or people in our state to come to Auburn,” Pickens said. “That’s really what we talk about. Just trying to get more big guys to come in.’

This story is for you Randy

Auburn will correct tight end recruiting concerns with 2019 class (SECCountry)
quote:

Let’s not forget about 2017 signee John Samuel Shenker.

The Colquitt County (Ga.) product was a lesser-known prospect when he signed, and he redshirted during the 2017 season. But multiple sources have told me the confidence Auburn has in Shenker is a big reason why the Tigers didn’t reach for a tight end late in the 2018 recruiting cycle. They’ll need to bring in a tight end in the 2019 class, but I wouldn’t say there’s a total lack of quality tight ends on the roster right now. Shenker just hasn’t had a chance to prove it.

But to get to your question, yes, tight end will be an area of emphasis.

Auburn plans to take two tight ends in the 2019 class.

Here are the top prospects who have an established mutual interest with the Tigers:

Jackson Lowe, Cartersville, Ga.
Luke Deal, Greenwood, S.C.
Tyler Fromm, Warner Robins, Ga.
Sean Brown, Rome, Ga.

The four listed above have all been on Auburn’s campus in the last month.

If Auburn plans to take two of this group, right now the best chance is probably with Brown and Fromm.

Brown has been to Auburn multiple times this spring and has made it quite clear how he feels about the Tigers. Fromm, the younger brother of Georgia’s quarterback, visited the Plains the weekend after picking up his offer. He has some national interest elsewhere, but based on my brief conversation with Fromm after The Opening Atlanta regional, the Tigers sit in a solid place because of the SEC connection.

There’s always the possibility of more names emerging. Two tight end prospects who have visited this spring — Nikolas Ognenovic and Garmon Randolph — are big-bodied recruits to keep an eye on if things go awry with the aforementioned four.

Haven't really heard Shenker's name mentioned in any of the practice updates but both KN & Wolk seem to have heard that staff likes him & that's why they passed on Alaimo

Top-100 prospect Jaren Handy calls Auburn his No. 1 school after initial visit (SECCountry)
quote:

Top-100 DE puts Auburn at No. 1 after visit

Jaren Handy, a former LSU commit, doesn’t plan on rushing into his next commitment.

The 4-star defensive end from New Augusta, Miss., committed to LSU on March 3 and de-committed two weeks later. Handy felt he’d made an abrupt, on-the-spot decision and wanted to collect his thoughts before making a final choice. The nation’s 96th overall prospect now plans to wait it out through the entirety of the process, ensuring he makes a well-informed pick.

“National Signing Day,” Handy told SEC Country. “No need to rush.”

That won’t stop Handy from being open about where his recruitment stands.

Despite the LSU de-commitment, those Tigers remain among the top few schools. The same can be said for Ole Miss, the only one of the two in-state schools making a serious push right now.

Following his decision to back off the LSU pledge, Auburn was one of the first schools to connect with him about a possible visit. Handy took that trip over the weekend, his first time on the Plains.

“Auburn is No. 1 now that I visited there,” Handy said. “They passed expectations by a lot. Meeting the people and meeting some of the players, it just was more than I expected. Probably because of the coaches. That visit, just how they are. It was real cool.”

Handy spoke with Gus Malzahn, Marcus Woodson and Rodney Garner on his visit. Those are the coaches one would expect a top Mississippi defensive end to speak with during a visit. Garner is the position coach, Woodson is the area recruiter and Malzahn is generally involved with top targets. All three preached early playing time to Handy, given the potential NFL draft overhaul coming up at the position.

Handy was particularly impressed by Garner.

“Mostly, I liked Coach Garner. As a guy off the field, he’s cool and everything. But you can tell when you put them pads on, you’re going to meet a different guy,” Handy said. “I like that. No, I love that. He holds you accountable for your actions. He wants you to be the best player you’re supposed to be.”

Handy wasn’t the only top Mississippi defensive lineman on campus last weekend.

Mississippi State defensive end commit Charles Moore accompanied Handy on the trip. The two want to play together at the next level. Handy made that clear during his conversation with SEC Country. Moore and Handy spoke several times with each other during the visit regarding the potential of playing together on the Plains.

“We could see ourselves playing there,” Handy said.

Other schools who can get into the mix, according to Handy, are Alabama, Mississippi State, Florida and Louisville.

He plans to return to Auburn on June 6. A little tidbit of news, in itself: That will be Big Cat Weekend, so the first weekend of June will be a big one for the Tigers.

Keep an eye on Bama in this race. If they make a serious push could be hard to beat. Also this kid seems to get serious visit highs

But man if we could somehow pull Hall, Handy, Moore & Pickering out of MS, could be starting an all Mississippi DL in a few years
