I mean yea we are in their group but if signing day were today we might get 1, maybe 2 at best of those guys. Aside from Ladson and Darius Thomas who I haven't heard of yet most of them are pretty solid leans to other programs.

Fair enough. If today were signing day tho I think from that bunch we would get 1 of Keyton/Sheffield, Brown & DeLoach which isn't that bad this early out. Like I said above, my bigger concern is looking like we are trailing for some of the top instate talent.

Thomas is 4* OT out of ARK. He's visited AU twice & is apparently a big fan of Malzahn. Obviously will be battle with Hogs but AU will be a major player

Frank Ladson might be the #1 WR in the country. Former UF commit now might be trending CLEM. However, told KN the other day he speaks almost daily with Kodi Burns & Bo Nix has started to text him. Plans to visit soon

Guess my point is AU is actually off to a better start this year than last cycle. Obviously that needs to translate to some recruiting wins or it doesn't matter but after the past 2 cycles I'm encouraged with where AU sits

What I think Auburn will do

Auburn is set to lose plenty of defensive tackle firepower after the 2018 season.

Its two seniors Russell and Williams will be gone regardless of any decision. Brown, the underclassman, is believed by many to be an early-round NFL draft pick. His departure after the upcoming season wouldn’t surprise anyone. It may be more surprising if he stayed.

That’s three roster spots right there.

Now, defensive line coach Rodney Garner has done a stand-up job the last two cycles filling out some depth with Jackson, Truesdell, Newkirk and Miller. On top of that, Kayode Oladele and Caleb Johnson from the 2018 class are listed as defensive ends for the time being, but could both transition into tackles.

When Auburn looks at it, I don’t think there’s a sense of desperation. Hence why we haven’t seen Garner make serious pushes for top national prospects. Instead, he’s honed in on in-state targets and a few from Georgia. I expect that to change throughout the spring when Garner can get on the road and see who he really wants from the 2019 class.

I think Auburn will grab two defensive tackles by the time the class is complete — one highly ranked national target and another in-state prospect.

What I think Auburn should do

The productivity loss Auburn is set to lose with Russell, Williams and likely Brown can’t be ignored. Those are the three primary sources of defensive tackle production from the 2017 season, and that’s likely to carry over to 2018. When those three leave, it will leave big shoes for one of the underclassmen to step into.

It’s moments like these that the departure of someone such as Antwuan Jackson catches up to you.

I don’t think this is panic mode by any means.

Garner has found underrated guys he’s quite high on the last few cycles, namely Alec Jackson and Truesdell. Newkirk’s experience and versatility will make him a major weapon for the next three seasons. And Miller was one of the best defensive tackles in the state, not to mention the nation.

There are options.

If Oladele and/or Johnson turn into tackles, there are even more options. I think that duo’s development throughout 2018 should dictate the final defensive tackle plan for the 2019 class. If it becomes clear one or both will become a tackle, then ride with two tackles in the class. But if end seems to be their future after Year 1, adding another in-state option would be a good idea for future depth purposes.

Absolutely need an elite DT in this class. Someone who can come in & have an affect as a true freshman ala Montravius Adams & Derrick Brown

Auburn recruiting question of the day: Top lesser-known prospect in Alabama (SECCountry)
quote:

Thanks for stopping by again, Drew.

This feels like a trick question since I don’t know who you don’t know much about, and I’m assuming you know much about several of the in-state guys. I also received a question from @_RCB3 on Twitter that ties somewhat into this about under-the-radar prospects who Auburn views more favorably than other programs right now. I’ll answer that one more specifically later in the week.

For Drew’s question, it’s somewhat dependent on what he defines as “top” and what he defines as not knowing much about. I’ll take the liberty of making those assumptions on Drew’s behalf.

There is one specific in-state target who has already been offered by Auburn, but he hasn’t yet been offered by Alabama. I’d expect him to pick up an offer from the Crimson Tide, so from that standpoint — as someone offered by Auburn and Alabama — he’d be a top in-state target.

As far as not knowing much about him, I figure Drew’s knowledge of the Birmingham area to be a little bit stronger than his familiarity with Wetumpka, Ala., which is where this prospect calls home, so I’ll assume you don’t know a ton about him, at least.

His name is Patrick Lucas Jr., a 3-star defensive tackle.

Lucas visited Auburn for its initial junior day on Feb. 3. He’s considering a return trip for the second junior day this upcoming weekend, though he’s trying to take visits to a couple other programs, too. Outside of Auburn, Lucas holds offers from Florida, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, Mississippi State and Tennessee. Alabama and Georgia are the primary Power 5 programs who have communicated, but haven’t offered.

Once spring evaluations rolls around, that’s likely to change.

Lucas didn’t hold an Auburn offer when he made his first junior day visit. When he left, he had this to say about an offer: “They didn’t tell me anything. I just talked to Coach [Kevin] Steele and Coach [Rodney] Garner, and they told me to stay in contact and build a relationship. … It’s the in-state school. I thought it would be nice to check it out and see what it’s all about.”

Within three days, Steele and Garner checked out Lucas’ film in more detail and offered. As someone who grew up an Alabama fan, Lucas likely will try a similar approach with the Crimson Tide. If that happens, an in-state defensive tackle battle — much like the race for Coynis Miller — will begin.

By that time, Drew, you’ll know plenty about him.

Auburn’s relationship with priority Georgia TE target ‘gets better every day’ (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn’s relationship with Georgia TE improves daily

Earlier this month, Sean Brown began to see his dreams turn into reality.

The 3-star tight end from Rome, Ga., visited Auburn for junior day and spoke about the opportunity to play in the SEC. Within weeks, he’d picked up offers from Auburn, Tennessee and Kentucky. Brown isn’t married to the idea of playing in the SEC, which is why he’s considering places such as N.C. State, but he calls the close-to-home conference the “front-runner” for now.

“It’s been completely unreal. I never expected it to go this far with everything. Just the fact that three SEC schools believed in me, it really means a lot to me,” Brown told SEC Country. “Really now I know I have the opportunity to play ball near home. I don’t have to go all the way across the country. I’d love to stay close to my family so they can watch me play. And I feel like SEC football is just different than any other conference.”

While the SEC is the front-runner, Brown maintains no school officially holds that designation.

Auburn and Tennessee have the SEC advantage and the fact he has organized visits.

Brown already attended Auburn for junior day. The 6-foot-5 Coosa High School tight end will head to Knoxville, Tenn., this weekend to visit the Volunteers. He doesn’t list Auburn as a leader, but Brown made it clear the Tigers set the bar that other programs such as Tennessee will have to match.

“They’re [other schools] really going to have to impress me,” Brown said. “Over at Auburn, it was just unbelievable. That place is great. The fact they mean business. They’re not just going to sit there and tell you you’re going to play. I’ve talked to the players over there, and they say the coaches are 100 percent honest with you and are going to shoot you straight. That really impressed me a lot.”

Brown doesn’t have an official timeline for his decision right now.

He plans to take a couple more visits this spring, especially a return trip to the Plains. Brown will go through the spring evaluation period to see what the message is from each program recruiting him. Then he’d like to decide before his senior season to avoid that midyear distraction, though he won’t commit before he feels ready.

“I want to make sure it feels like a home, somewhere I know I wouldn’t have a problem staying for the next four years. I got to meet the coaches and see how they feel about me,” Brown said. “There’s a lot of different things that go into it, but most importantly is whether it feels like a home to me.”

Auburn holds one clear advantage over others: immediate playing time.

The Tigers haven’t had much recruiting success at tight end the last few cycles. They’ll need that to change in a big way in the 2019 class. Brown is one of the tight ends — despite barely rated inside the top 1,000 prospects nationally (expected to rise with re-rankings) — Auburn sought out at the beginning of the cycle and hasn’t let off.

Brown communicates with one of offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey and tight ends coach Larry Porter every day. The Auburn message is what one would expect given the Tigers’ tight end situation.

“I have a great opportunity to play at Auburn my freshman year,” Brown said. “They’ve been stressing that more than anything. Every day, you’ve got to call and talk to them to build a relationship with them. It just gets better every day.”

Auburn updates on 2 more tight ends

The Tigers are likely to take more than one tight end in the 2019 cycle. Brown would be a great starting place, but Auburn is also searching for other targets.

A new tight end offer went out to a 2019 tight end with a familiar name: Tyler Fromm.

Fromm is the younger brother of Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm. The younger Fromm is a wide receiver-tight end hybrid prospect from Warner Robins, Ga. He plays some at both positions, but he’s more likely to project to tight end in college.

Auburn isn’t the only school to get involved with Fromm. Southern Cal, Louisville, Florida and Ole Miss have all offered in the last week. Fromm ranks as the No. 31 tight end nationally.

The other tight end target to watch is Luke Deal, who plans to be at Auburn’s junior day this weekend.

Deal told SEC Country this about Auburn: “They are very involved. I talk to Coach [Larry] Porter a lot.”

A recent Clemson offer is expected to be the biggest shake-up for the Greenwood, S.C., talent. Auburn’s hope is that its immediate need at tight end will help secure more visits from Deal after this junior day excursion
.

Deal is my favorite TE target. Would love a TE class of Deal & Brown

What I think Auburn will do

This will be the first year since Travis Williams took over as linebackers coach that he’ll be expected — required even — to bring in a big linebacker recruiting haul.

He helped sign three linebackers in the 2017 class, and one of those — TD Moultry — already converted to Buck. In 2018, two more linebackers signed, with Josh Marsh as a role player at linebacker, in the secondary and in special teams.

Williams has been one of the team’s best recruiters in that span. The 2019 class will be an opportunity to use that strong recruiting skill for his own position group.

The list above already has more than a dozen prospects who the Tigers have offered. Auburn is likely to offer several more before the class signs. How many the Tigers offer depends on how successful they are with the targets already signed.

With three seniors leaving after 2018, Auburn will need to sign at least three. But given Moultry’s move and Marsh’s flexibility, it’ll be imperative for the Tigers to land more than three this cycle to make up for lost numbers through the 2017 and potentially 2018 recruiting cycles.

Williams is casting a national net in his linebackers search. Auburn has left its recruiting pipeline of Alabama, Georgia and Florida — though he is looking there, too — to offer prospects from Virginia, California and Louisiana. Williams will make sure to evaluate every prospect he’d potentially want to come to Auburn, and it’ll result in the Tigers meeting their needs in this class.

What I think Auburn should do

Williams is a recruiting master, so it’ll be fun to watch him to emphasize his own position group for once.

He’s had big recruiting wins the last two years with prospects such as Britt, Wooten, Harris and McClain. But four players in two years will likely pale in comparison to what the Tigers pull of in the 2019 class. I think Auburn should max out what it can at linebacker in this class.

For starters, Williams will likely become a hot coaching commodity in the college football world. It’s not what Auburn fans want to hear necessarily, but Williams’ days as the Tigers’ linebackers coach won’t last forever, so it’s critical to get the most out of his recruiting ability as possible.

I’d load up with five linebackers in this class, especially if Marsh ends up projecting more as a defensive back or strict special teamer. You know Williams will evaluate the linebackers well, and you know he’ll strike a strong enough connection with many of them to earn their signatures.

Not sure about 5 unless consider one of them a Buck target. AU typically only has 2 LBs on the field these days. But I do agree needs to be a priority this class especially landing my boy Kalen DeLoach

Top-100 tackle Xavier Truss said 1 school stood out on Southeast tour (SECCountry)
quote:

Top-100 tackle says Auburn stood out

Xavier Truss experienced his first recruiting tour to the Southeast last weekend.

The 4-star tackle from Warwick, R.I., came down South for a multi-visit weekend to some top college programs — Clemson, Georgia, Alabama and Auburn, in that order. He capped off the weekend with a return trip to Penn State, a program he’d never visited.

It’s early in the 6-foot-7, 325-pound tackle’s recruitment, but one part of the Southeast swing made the biggest impression on Truss.

“Auburn probably stood out the most to me out of the Southern schools because I had no idea going into Auburn what to think, and e,” Truss told SEC Country. “I had already been to Penn State and had a feel for them, but out of the schools I had no experience with, Auburn took the cake.

“I just felt incredibly comfortable on campus at Auburn and comfortable around everyone there.”

Truss’ communication with the Tigers began last year through then-offensive line coach Herb Hand.

Hand’s departure left Truss with no point of contact at Auburn. New offensive line coach J.B. Grimes re-initiated the recruitment of Truss, which came at a perfect time given Truss’ travel plans. Auburn squeezed its way into the conversation, and by the end of the weekend it had made a major move for Truss.

“I had a blast at Auburn, Coach [J.B.] Grimes is a really great man, and I actually got to learn a lot about what goes into molding an Auburn football player academically and athletically,” Truss said. “I was talking with Coach Hand before he went to Texas and was really excited about Auburn, but unfortunately had no contact with any other coaches after he left. So when I got a text from Coach Grimes I was so excited to get down there.

“I feel like I learned a lot about the program in one day from academics to athletics that I had no idea about, so it was really fulfilling.”

Truss isn’t in a hurry to make a decision, which likely plays in Auburn’s favor, as well as other programs with which he’s less familiar.

The 4-star tackle said he’d like to make a decision after his senior season, though he’s already starting to narrow his list of top schools. Truss will take a few more visits to Big Ten programs this spring, but nothing is set in stone.

A return trip to the Plains is almost a guarantee.

“I want to get down there again to get a chance to see the liveliness on game day,” Truss said.

Truss is the No. 99 overall player in the nation, and the No. 13 tackle.

What I think Auburn will do

This is one of the trickier positions to project for a couple of reasons.

First, it’s not a guarantee any of the potential early NFL entries leave. Dean is the most likely of the group, but if the Tigers can hold onto Dean, Davis and Dinson, then the immediate need after the 2018 season won’t be there. That hasn’t stopped the Tigers from offering 20 cornerback prospects already, however.

That brings us to point No. 2, which stems around the unproven nature of the depth chart.

With Carlton Davis’ departure, Auburn will look for its go-to cover corner early in spring practice. Whether or not the Tigers feel comfortable with that search may dictate how many cornerbacks the Tigers try to go after in the 2019 class.

One thing is clear: Auburn is only looking for the elite.

The Tigers have been scanning the 4-star and 5-star market early in the cycle. It’s possible they have to scour the 3-star ranks later in the class, much like they did with McCreary last year. But for now, Auburn has its sights set on high-caliber prospects, and many of them are listening.

When it’s all said and done, I expect Auburn to find two elite targets and a third, if the Tigers feel the need to add another.

What I think Auburn should do

This one is self-explanatory.

Auburn doesn’t have a sure-fire No. 1 cornerback. It really doesn’t have a sure-fire No. 1 cornerback in the future. Christian Tutt, Roger McCreary, Malcolm Askew and Traivon Leonard were fine prospects — who may play a key role for the Tigers — but none of them offer the recruiting pop that many of the 2019 targets do.

Since Auburn isn’t guaranteed to lose any corners after the 2018 season, the Tigers won’t have any recruiting pressure at cornerback. That should work to their benefit. Marcus Woodson and Greg Brown can work the market together without the desperate need to find someone.

That tag-team recruiting duo should help Auburn snag one or two top cornerbacks, which is all the Tigers need from the 2019 class.

Where Auburn stands with top-100 wide receiver targets in 2019 class (SECCountry)
quote:

Where Auburn stands with top-100 WR targets

Auburn is shooting high at wide receiver, and why shouldn’t it?

The Tigers landed all-star classes at the position in 2016 and 2018. In those two groups, Auburn signed Nate Craig-Myers, Eli Stove, Seth Williams, Matthew Hill and others. The immediate need at wide receiver isn’t there, as proven by the Tigers’ willingness to have Noah Igbinoghene split time at cornerback.

That isn’t going to stop Auburn from trying to bring in the best of the best at wide receiver.

Auburn already has a commitment from 4-star wide receiver George Pickens, a 6-foot-5 prospect from Hoover, Ala. Pickens ranks as the No. 28 receiver nationally and the No. 165 overall prospect in the country. His recruiting stock likely will rise as the spring goes on.

I’ve spoken with sources close to three other SEC programs that have said flipping Pickens will be a primary goal this spring and summer. When multiple national powers clamor over a prospect, it’s usually a sign of a rankings rise to come. (Side note: I don’t expect the other programs to be successful in their Pickens-related efforts).

Even if Pickens doesn’t rise into the top 100 overall, Auburn will be in the hunt for several top-100 wide receivers.

Here are the receiver prospects ranked inside the top 100 who the Tigers are actively — and at least somewhat successfully — recruiting. Check out the latest updates on each below.

5-star Georgia commit Jadon Haselwood (No. 1 WR, No. 2 overall)
5-star Frank Ladson (No. 3 WR, No. 15 overall)
4-star Theo Wease (No. 5 WR, No. 30 overall)
4-star Devonta Lee (No. 7 WR, No. 48 overall)
4-star Trey Palmer (No. 16 WR, No. 86 overall)
4-star Miami commit Jeremiah Payton (No. 17 WR, No. 87 overall)
4-star Jalen Curry (No. 18 WR, No. 90 overall)
4-star Jashawn Sheffield (No. 19 WR, No. 98 overall)

Haselwood, much like Pickens, will be chased by any top program you can name. The Georgia commit visited with then-Georgia commit Rashad Cheney during Auburn’s only official visit-less weekend in January. He attended a pair of Auburn games last season. It isn’t likely the Tigers can pull off a flip from the Bulldogs, but — as is the case with others and Pickens — Haselwood is worth the attempt.

Ladson, Wease and Curry are a trio of prospects on the 5-star cusp who seem open with their recruitments.

Ladson, previously committed to Florida, wants to take his time with the re-commitment process. Auburn will be a factor. Ladson told SEC Country earlier this week that, thanks to wide receivers coach Kodi Burns, Auburn is “involved a lot” in his recruitment. No date has been set for a visit, but he expects to visit the Plains soon.

Wease also hopes to visit in the near future, saying Wednesday that he plans to “catch a spring practice” at Auburn. Curry also said he expects to visit Auburn this spring.

Lee and Palmer are a pair of prospects from Louisiana who have Auburn among their top schools. The Tigers are on the outside looking in for both, but they’re in the conversation. Lee released a top 7 that included USC, Clemson, LSU, Texas, Arkansas, Ohio State and Auburn. The Tigers cracked the top 10 for Palmer, who has a top group that includes Auburn, Alabama, Florida State, Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Georgia, Michigan and Mississippi State.

Auburn will take a similar approach with Payton as it will with Haselwood. Payton visited Auburn for junior day two weeks before committing to Miami. He said he plans to return to the Plains for a visit or two despite being committed to the Hurricanes.

Last but not least: Sheffield. He once was rated as a 5-star prospect and could return to that level despite playing independent school football in Georgia. Sheffield has developed a strong relationship with Burns, which has made Auburn a true contender. Sheffield was close to shutting down his process in the fall, but a coaching change at his original school of choice altered everything. The Tigers will try to get him — and his cornerback teammate Jaylin Simpson — on campus this spring.

I think Sheffield is the guy to keep an eye. Him, Pickens & Keyton would be a perfect WR class this cycle

Mississippi defensive back's eyeing two Tigers (Rivals)
quote:

MOBILE, Ala. — Jarrian Jones came to the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp present by adidas ready to compete Sunday. He has been offered by some schools to play wide receiver, but he is primarily being recruited to play defensive back. He played all defense Sunday and his peers recognized his strong performance.

A school that likes Jones on defense is Auburn. The 6-foot-1, 189 pound athlete out of Brandon (Miss.) Northwest Rankin on campus January 20 and that is when the Tigers offered.

They are making a move for one of the best in Mississippi.

"Coach [Marcus] Woodson just has that flavor about him and that has put Auburn on my list," said Jones. "Since he got to Auburn, he has made it a priority to get me. He is on me every day, he is showing me a lot of interest and we are developing a strong relationship."

"Everyone treated me like family. It had that home feel and I liked it. I am liking it more and more with coach Woodson coming at me the way he is right now."

Auburn is high on his list with numerous other schools, like Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Oklahoma to name a few.

Another Tigers he has his eye on is LSU. He will visiting Baton Rouge this weekend.

"LSU is DBU, so it is hard not to like them at the position I play. It is home of the savages and I love their style of play.

"I will be looking around this weekend and just seeing how the coaches interact with the players. It is my first time going there, so I think it will be cool."

Jones does not have a true leader, but he is not ruling out a decision sometime this spring or summer. He has one official visit scheduled and that it to Oklahoma on April 13.

In-state cornerback visiting Auburn (Rivals)
quote:

Auburn on Thursday will practice for the first time of the spring and at least one visitor will be there to watch.

Cordale Flott, a heavily-recruited cornerback from Saraland, will make his first visit to Auburn and bring with him his mother, father, sister and cousin.

“I want to build a relationship with the coaches, see the campus and watch practice,” Flott said.

Flott already has begun building a bond with two Auburn coaches. He’s been in contact recently with defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson and area recruiter Travis Williams.

“Coach Woodson is a great person,” Flott said. “He has shown he cares about my future. I’m looking forward to getting to know him and Coach T-Will.”

Flott has extra incentive to visit Auburn. The Tigers extended an offer on Wednesday.

“I’d been talking to them throughout the week and then my coach came around noon and told me they’d offered,” Flott said. “I was very excited.”

Flott also received offers from Tennessee, Mississippi State and Arkansas on Wednesday, four days after visiting and earning an offer from Alabama.

“It was a great day,” Flott said.

Flott also has offers from Ole Miss, Memphis, Purdue, Southern Miss, Louisiana-Lafayette, Tulane, Central Florida and Troy, among others.
