Nobody is recruiting four-star linebacker like Clemson (Rivals)
Sucks that both him & Amari Kight seem to have very little interest in AU...
quote:
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Like many schools, Clemson stopped by Birmingham (Ala.) Jackson-Olin in January to check on their top prospects and before leaving, the Tigers extended an offer to 2019 linebacker Lavonta Bentley.
The junior has exploded with over a dozen offers early in 2018 and he quickly has ascended to the top of many boards at his position. Clemson is recruiting him harder than anyone and he feels like a priority for them.
"Coach [Todd] Bates texts me every day and he is recruiting me the hardest out of all the schools right now," said Bentley. "He is just trying to get to know me mostly. He also shares some of the inspirational stuff that he writes with me and he has talked to me about Clemson.
"He is a great guy and he is really trying to get me to fall in love with the school. He has been on me about visiting and I am going up there March 3 for the first time."
The 6-foot-1, 215 pound head-hunter can't wait to see what it is like at Clemson. He already knows he will like what he sees.
"I am ready to get up there now. It will be a good experience and I will get to see how I fit in there. I want to see if it feels like family and talk with the coaches. I know it will be a good visit."
At this time, Clemson is one of the top two schools on Bentley's list. The other is Alabama. The way the Tigers are recruiting him combined with how they play has put them in a good spot at this stage.
"Clemson has a great defense and they ball out every game," said Bently. "They have really been stopping great offenses over the last few years and that is impressive.. They have a fast defense and that is how I like how to play.
"I like how they play, coach Bates is showing me a lot of interest and those are big reasons why I like Clemson so much."
Sucks that both him & Amari Kight seem to have very little interest in AU...

SEC Spotlight: Commit Fit (Rivals)
quote:
Sometimes it’s not always the highest-rated prospects that fit the best with the school of their choice. In this series we call Commit Fit, Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell looks at the best fits from the 2018 class to the schools with which they signed.
Today we examine the SEC.
Note: Only high school prospects are evaluated for this piece.

QUARTERBACK
1. Joey Gatewood, Auburn
2. Justin Fields, Georgia
3. Emory Jones, Florida
4. Matt Corral, Ole Miss
5. Jalen Mayden, Mississippi State
Farrell’s take: Gatewood gets the nod over Fields mainly because he’s such a great fit for Auburn and Georgia doesn’t often use dual threats. But both should have excellent careers. Jones will be a good fit for what Dan Mullen wants to do at Florida because he can move while Corral’s mobility and arm talent should make him a star at Ole Miss. No. 5 was tough, but I went with Mayden because he’s tall and mobile, and does excellent work outside the pocket at times.

RUNNING BACK
1. Zamir White, Georgia
2. James Cook, Georgia
3. Asa Martin, Auburn
4. Dameon Pierce, Florida
5. Jashaun Corbin, Texas A&M
Farrell’s take: White is on top even with the knee injury because he’s perfect for the Georgia offense. The Dawgs land the top two here because Cook can work well in space and Georgia does so well with multiple talented running backs. Martin could be a star at Auburn and I really like Pierce at Florida with his physical running style. Corbin was a tough call at No. 5 with so many talented choices, but he’ll be utilized in the new Aggies' offense very well.

A ton of LB talent instate this year.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE
1. Rick Sandidge, South Carolina
2. Coynis Miller, Auburn
3. Christian Barmore, Alabama
4. Jalen Cunningham, Ole Miss
5. Jordan Davis, Georgia
Farrell’s take: Plenty of potential here in this group with most of them being gap shooters. Sandidge will be excellent as a 3-tech while Miller will fit in well with what Auburn likes from its defensive tackles – a combination of run-stuffing and pushing the pocket. Barmore is raw but he will be a big-time run-stuffer. Cunningham brings athleticism while Davis is stout and powerful at the point of attack.

SAFETY
1. Kelvin Joseph, LSU
2. Leon O’Neal, Texas A&M
3. Trey Dean, Florida
4. Quindarious Monday, Auburn
5. Brendon Harris, Vanderbilt
Farrell’s take: Joseph and O’Neal are long and rangy and can cover a lot of ground, which is key in the defenses they are joining. Dean could play corner or safety and has the highest ceiling of all if he can avoid being too grabby. Monday has excellent ball skills and good instincts so he’d be an excellent centerfielder for Auburn. Harris has good size and range, and should be a star for Vandy.

ATHLETE
1. Alontae Taylor, Tennessee
2. Matthew Hill, Auburn
3. Jordan Moore, Texas A&M
4. Amari Burney, Florida
5. Bryce Thompson, South Carolina
Farrell’s take: Most of the players in this group will end up on offense, but the best part about them is that they could play defense, or most of them could, if needed. I like the offensive potential of Taylor, Hill and Moore, especially with their respective teams.

No idea. It's really crazy how loaded all the SEC states are this cycle. Should really help AU hit on some big needs this cycle

What I think Auburn will do: Auburn doesn’t have this glaring need at running back as many portions of the fan base will have you believe. There is some uncertainty about who will be the feature guy to emerge from the group, or if that feature guy will, in fact, emerge. For that reason, sources have told me the Tigers have evaluated a few potential grad transfer running back targets but have elected to stick with its current running back rotation instead.
That should tell you how the staff feels about this running back group. Auburn likes the long-term prospects of Kam Martin, Asa Martin, Whitlow and Barrett. Who will step up as the feature back remains to be seen, but it appears the Tigers feel better about any of those options than an already established grad transfer possibility.
If Auburn feels that strongly heading into 2018, coaches will feel even more secure at the position going into 2019. Nobody from the group is expected to leave early for the NFL. If someone departed, it’d likely be because of transfer. Still, the Tigers enter 2018 with seven players who will be listed at running back, so the depth is fine.
For that reason, the desperation to land a running back isn’t there — hence the 6 importance rating above — but it’s a piece Auburn certainly wants to add in the 2019 class. I expect the Tigers to land one of the 12 running back targets it has already offered. If that happens, Auburn may be OK riding it out with just that one feature back in this class, given the fact it took three in 2018.

What I think Auburn should do: More or less, I think Auburn should do what I expect it will do.
The Tigers need to go after the 10 running back targets they have chased so far. My favorites to land with Auburn right now would be Cain or Brown, with the 5-star prospect from IMG Academy as the highest target on the board. If Auburn can’t land one of its already offered prospects, it might be in the Tigers’ best interest to take two of their secondary options, so to speak.
Even if Auburn landed Cain, Brown or another offered running back, it might be best for the Tigers to scour the rest of the running back market for a second back in the class. Given the competitiveness of the 2018 running back room, transfers after this upcoming season wouldn’t come as a major surprise to anyone.
On top of that, Joiner and Shivers will be used in different roles than a standard every-down back.
For that reason, I’d strongly consider taking a second running back to go along with one of their elite options.
Man Wolk seems optimistic on both Clay Webb & Noah Cain. I hope he's right...

Auburn's top running back targets in the 2019 recruiting class (AL.com)
quote:
With Auburn's 2018 recruiting class signed and in the books, it's time to get familiar with a new batch of prospects. Over the next several days, AL.com will provide position-by-position look at Auburn's top targets in the 2019 recruiting cycle. Today, we're analyzing the running back position.

TOP RUNNING BACK TARGET
Noah Cain (5-foot-11, 207 pounds, Bradenton, Fla.)
Cain, a native of Baton Rouge, La., is one of the top running backs in the 2019 class. The IMG Academy prospect is a five-star recruit who is rated as the No. 3 running back in the nation and the No. 27 player overall in the country. While LSU is his hometown team, he isn't a lock to end up back home and Auburn is very much in the mix for him after he took an extended weekend visit earlier this month for the program's junior day.

2 MORE TO WATCH
Derrian Brown (5-foot-11, 174 pounds, Buford, Ga.)
Brown is the No. 9 running back in the 2019 class and considered the 139th-best player in the country. He holds offers from 22 programs, including Florida, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, Tennessee and others, though Auburn is the apparent favorite at the moment. He was on campus in November for the Iron Bowl.

quote:
John Emery Jr. (6-foot, 194 pounds, Destrehan, La.)
Emery is a Louisiana native, and it'll likely be difficult for Auburn to pull him away from his home state, where he could become the next great running back for LSU. Still, Auburn will make a push for the four-star prospect, who is ranked as the No. 6 running back in the nation and 66th-best player in the 2019 class. Emery was on the Plains earlier this month for Auburn's junior day, so he has already had a chance to get acquainted with the Tigers' staff and get a feel for campus.
My favorite back in this class. Like him more than Noah Cain. Would be ecstatic if we somehow pulled him out of LA

IN-STATE GLANCE
The top running back in the state for 2019 is St. James prospect Tony Amerson, a 5-foot-10, 210-pound three-star prospect who holds offers from Mississippi State, Kentucky, Louisville and a handful of others, though Auburn has yet to offer him. Amerson is the No. 52 running back in the nation and No. 26 player in Alabama. The state's No. 2 running back is three-star Hoover prospect Larry McCammon, a 5-foot-10, 180-pounder who has just one Power Five offer at the moment--Iowa.
I'm not really high on Amerson. McCammon though is one to watch. Also name to file away is Kenneth Bothwell. Plays for Southside where we got Alaric Williams from a few cycles ago. Like his tape a lot
