* Tight end Jaelyn Lay is making a case for the top tight end in the country. It’s not a great year at the position and he has the size and moves well enough to take that next step in the rankings, at least in my opinion. Clemson fans will be excited about this kid.
This is big reason CLEM didn't push super hard for Deal

* Three different players made commitments during the early session and all three will make their future teams happy. Derrick McLendon chose Florida State and brings athleticism to the defensive end position while wide receiver Lance Wilhoite will be a dangerous weapon for Oregon at wide receiver. Keveon Mullins has had some good moments at linebacker as well and is listed as an athlete because he can be a big defensive back or a linebacker. However, South Carolina is the only school to offer him as a wide receiver, and he will get his first crack there.

What #RivalsChallenge QBs are looking for in their destinations (Rivals)
quote:
ATLANTA - When Graham Mertz was picking a school, he didn’t care about facilities or alternative helmets or how cool the stadiums were on visits.
For the four-star quarterback from Overland Park (Kan.) Blue Valley North who committed to Wisconsin, none of that ancillary stuff mattered.
“I couldn’t care less about uniforms,” Mertz said at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas Media Day. “Wisconsin has one helmet. They have a different face mask, and that’s all you need. You only need one.”
Quarterbacks have a different mindset on visits. They want to understand how the head coach, offensive coordinator and position coach envision using them in the offense. They study which system fits their style best.
Seeing the high-tech facilities are far down the list.
“I just wanted to get to know the coaching staff,” Florida State quarterback commit Sam Howell said “I really like coach (Willie) Taggart and (offensive coordinator Walt) Bell. I fit in very well with what they’re trying to do at Florida State, so I fell in love with those guys. We’re going to have a lot of success there.
“There are way more important things to think about, especially for a quarterback. Everybody is going to have cool facilities.”
Auburn quarterback pledge Bo Nix jelled with coach Gus Malzahn, especially since Malzahn is known as an offensive coach. Coordinators and position coaches are also crucial, but Nix said the guy in charge is most important.
“I was looking at the atmosphere of the university and where I could see myself going to school for three or four years,” Nix said. “I looked at the stadium, the atmosphere, the environment, the facilities had a little to do with it because you want to be around great equipment.
“The coaching staff was big, because I knew coach Malzahn is going to be there for a while, so that was a great security blanket to finish things off. If I had to pick, I’d say head coach is most important. He’s the head coach and he makes the ultimate decisions, but OC is important and the QB coach has a great impact on quarterbacks.”
For Mertz, how coach Paul Chryst and quarterbacks coach Jon Budmayr worked together was another selling point for the Badgers. That mind-meld was a crucial factor why the Badgers won out after late pushes from Ohio State, Georgia, Notre Dame and others.
“A lot of guys look for all the flash and stuff, but it’s different at the quarterback position,” Mertz said. “It’s about how you fit as a quarterback in the system and what can prepare you best for your future.
“It’s the relationship they have together. I know at Wisconsin, Coach Budmayr and Coach Chryst have a great relationship. He played under him, they know each other and how they feed off each other and that’s a great thing to have.”
Flashy uniforms and high-tech facilities are nice. But for quarterbacks, maybe not so important. At all.
“I picked Auburn and they’ve been traditional forever, so that wasn’t a big deal at all,” Nix said.

The biggest surprises from #RivalsChallenge (Rivals)
quote:
ATLANTA -- The Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas had a little bit of everything - including its share of surprises. Below, we take a look at some of the players that turned heads.

Speed’s not all in the South
When you come to any event with prospects from all over the country and there is a speed competition, then many would expect the fastest players to be from the South. Not this year at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge. Out of the players who competed in the Fastest Man Competition, the fastest 40 time went to 2020 defensive back Kelee Ringo (4.56 seconds) out of Arizona. Missouri athlete Jameson Williams (4.57 seconds) was second. The South was well represented, but the fastest guys in this event were from the Midwest and West regions.

Webb is human
Every time we have seen five-star center Clay Webb, he has been dominant. On Thursday, he was just good. He showed he is not a superhero, but human. When his team needed him in the Lineman Challenge, he stepped up and won the battle to give his team the victory. He struggled some, though, mostly with Virginia commit Jowon Briggs. Webb is still clearly one of the top offensive linemen in the country, however, and will be pursued by Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia and LSU, among others.

South Florida DE dominated
When we saw Khris Bogle at the first Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas in Miami back in February, he dominated. The No. 3 weakside defensive end was even better Thursday. He was named MVP for the defensive line, and it was not really that close. He looks like a wide receiver on the hoof and showed great quickness off the ball and the ability to win inside and outside. Miami is viewed as the favorite for the local product.

West Coast three-star got noticed
There were a lot of outstanding, highly ranked wide receivers inside Mercedes-Benz on Thursday, and many had their moments. But McKel Broussard came in somewhat under the radar as a recruit and held his own. He has a 5.5 Rivals rating and offers from Florida Atlantic and Rice, but he outplayed that offer list Thursday. He flashed consistent hands, he was smooth out of his breaks and he had a better performance than many would expect by looking at his offer list.

Constantin has some hands
After the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp in Mobile (Ala.), linebacker Bryton Constantin moved up to four-star status and a 5.8 rivals rating. After the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge, the Clemson commit out of Louisiana will continue to ascend up the rankings. He had three interceptions, helped his team reach the championship game and was the top linebacker in coverage from start to finish. The rising star showed great feet, instincts and reaction throughout the day. See a few of his interceptions below.

Shamar has some serious speed
Shamar McCollum was a handful for any offensive lineman he lined up against. His speed off the ball created a buzz inside Mercedes-Benz, especially during the first session. He has a nice offer list with offers from Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina and Oregon, among others. But with his length, quickness and frame, he looked like he deserves more.

Wake Forest got a steal
Nolan Groulx was at one time committed to Wisconsin, but he is now on the Wake Forest commitment list. A couple of his teammates Thursday called his play “dirty” and “tough.” One compared him to Christian McCaffrey. He runs precise routes, he has sticky hands and he made play after play throughout the day.

Palmer brings versatility
Trey Palmer is mostly known for his play at wide receiver, but he shined on both sides of the ball Thursday. He may have even played better at cornerback. What he showed was how talented of an athlete he is. Palmer is planning to release a top five next week and we expect home-state school LSU to be on it. Many feel the Tigers are the favorite.
Wouldn't be surprised if we were in his top 5 but we aren't a major factor in recruitment
But who knows maybe he OVs & commits to round out our 15 WR class

The seven players who earned MVP status at #RivalsChallenge (Rivals)
quote:
ATLANTA – An event as talent-rich as the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge presented by adidas not only pits the top prospects in the country against each other, but also reveals who plays their best on the biggest stage. The seven position MVPs from the 2018 event earned their hardware by besting the top high school prospects at their respective positions.

quote:
QUARTERBACK: Bo Nix
The highest-ranked of the quarterbacks coming into the event, Nix emerged as the position MVP in what was one of the deepest group of passers we have had at the event in recent years. Nix started off impressing with his footwork and mastery of the finer points of the position, then spun a consistently good football throughout the day. His arm strength is on the plus side for sure, but maybe most impressive was the intangibles he brought to the field. By day’s end he was calling his own plays in 7-on-7 and ultimately led his team to the title.
Also Impressed: Ryan Hilinski, Sam Howell, Graham Mertz

quote:
RUNNING BACK: Trey Sanders
The biggest running back at the event was also the top performer at day’s end. After seeing the MVPs at the offensive skill positions, it is no surprise that the red team won the 7-on-7 championship. Sanders helped his team to the title by proving to be a difficult match-up for linebackers and safeties tasked with checking him. He is quick in short spaces and possesses an excellent pair of hands. Already the No. 1 ranked running back in 2019 and a five-star, Sanders definitely lived up to the billing in Atlanta.
Also Impressed: Devyn Ford
Really wish this kid would have given us a look. He's gonna be a monster but probably a monster for the Tide....

WIDE RECEIVER/TIGHT END: Trejan Bridges
This was a close battle down to the end, and it was a championship game touchdown catch for Bridges that sealed the MVP award for the future Oklahoma Sooner. Bridges was already in the conversation for top overall performer at the position after a strong day from start to finish. His ability to line up on the outside and in the slot, to run deep routes as well as short and intermediate routes and his sure hands made him a favorite for quarterbacks throughout the day. Of course, it always helps when your team wins and Bridges lead his squad to the title.
Also Impressed: Nolan Groulx, Jadon Haselwood, Trey Palmer
Kinda big Haselwood didn't run away with this. He's typically most dominant WR at an event
Posted on 6/29/18 at 7:32 am to TigerPaw1
quote:
OFFENSIVE LINE: Kardell Thomas
Thomas did not go back-to-back as the bench press champion at this year’s Five-Star Challenge, but he was able to take home the MVP award that eluded him a year earlier. Surprisingly, Thomas nearly lost the championship round one-on-one to Virginia commit Jowon Briggs, but the coaches called their first two battles too close to call and Thomas won the third tiebreaker. From beginning to end, though, no one was as consistently dominant as the LSU commit. His strength is obvious, but he has also evolved from a technique and fundamentals standpoint.
Also Impressed: Chris Morris, Justin Rogers, Saleem Wormley
LSU is recruiting some massive dudes on OL

quote:
DEFENSIVE LINE: Khris Bogle
One look at Florida native Khris Bogle and you would think he struggles at the point of attack. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound defensive end is very lean, but surprisingly very strong. He impressively overpowered several bigger offensive tackles throughout Thursday’s competition, using his length to get leverage and his quickness to get into them before they could extend. Although total win stats were not kept for the entire day, in our estimation Bogle won more on-on-ones than any other defensive lineman, and he did so in impressive fashion.
Also Impressed: Jowon Briggs, McKinley Jackson, Myles Murphy

quote:
LINEBACKER: Bryton Constantin
There were a surprisingly low number of interceptions during the course of the 7-on-7 tournament, which made Constantin’s three picks from the linebacker position particularly noticeable. The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder is rangy in coverage and was able to close down passing lanes in a hurry. Not only was Constantin in the right spot regularly, he also completed the play by making the interception, showing his ball skills. This is another athletic linebacker who can play in space that Clemson is adding to its defense.
Also Impressed: Justin Flowe, Tyron Hopper, Lee Kpogba

quote:
DEFENSIVE BACK: Elias Ricks
At 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, Ricks looks like a safety, but his ability to fluidly flip his hips and cover outside receivers through their routes is why he is ranked as the No. 2 prospect at the cornerback position to start out the 2020 class. That size allows Ricks to play physical at the line of scrimmage, and that level of physicality took several wide receivers out of their game. His length allowed him to get in passing lanes, and even though he did not end the day with any interceptions he ended up with several knockdowns.
Also Impressed: Akeem Dent, Kelee Ringo, Tyrique Stevenson
