Something interesting Franklin was player host to Anthony Schwartz. Dude catches lots of flack because of Last Chance U but if coaches are putting you as player host shows they trust you

Calvin Ashley: Tigers will be 'great' in 2017 (247)
quote:

What kind of team does touted 5-star 2017 offensive tackle signee Calvin Ashley think Auburn will have in 2017? "We're going to be great," Ashley said. "Real great." Ashley attended A-Day on Saturday. It was his second trip to Auburn in as many weeks. "I feel very comfortable here," he said. "I love the place." KN talked about some of the notable no shows. 4* DE Brenton Cox did not make trip but he was apparently a soft commit to coming to the game anyway. Apparently staff did not think he would make it. 4* ATH Nathaniel Watson went to Mississippi State's spring game. Apparently that was always an option and with how many times he's been to AU it's not a big deal that he was in Starkville.

The two biggest no shows were 4* OG Trey Hill and 4* LB JJ Peterson. Hill chose to go to Clemson. KN says Peterson might have been in a fender bender this week and would explain why he couldn't make the trip. Also according to FSU 247 4* S Quindarious Monday was in Tallahassee instead of Auburn Saturday. FSU and UF are in his 2nd group

One poster was melting over 4* OT Richard Gouraige supposedly choosing to go to Clemson's spring game over AU's. Turns out he didn't make it to either. He did go to Florida's Friday night and KN thinks right now Gators team to beat with Clemson 2nd and AU 3rd. Apparently it's hard for him to travel as his coaches are who have to take him to schools. KN noted that Clemson might only have room for 1 OT and FWIW 5* OT Jackson Carmen has them #1 so it could turn into another AU/UF battle

KN talked about numbers for WR & OL after those 2 commits. The Tigers will take 2 more up front both will be OTs. Sounds like we could still take up to 3 more at WR though that's not locked in stone. Could come down to need at other positions but I have to think if Justyn Ross, Matthew Hill and any of Kearis Jackson/Marquez Ezzard/Jacob Copeland/Seth Williams wanted to commit we would take them as well

Bottom line AU still could take 3 more WRs if possible

Talked to Joey Gatewood for a couple minutes (247)
quote:

About his game next August vs. Cartersville (Ga.) and No. 1 overall recruit/QB Trevor Lawrence.

He's pumped. Not imtimidated. Thinks Cartersville might have trouble tackling him. He felt good about being able to run/pass them.

Really just looking forward to the game.

And hopes AU fans can get out there ... since it's near Atlanta.

KN has VIP article up on 4* QB Joey Gatewood. Apparently he split his time watching the game and recruiting because in his own words "trying to get this class right". He enjoyed watching the offense and still thinks he's a great fit. Apparently he's now close with Chip Lindsey and 100% on board with Auburn. He's focused now on recruiting others. At A-Day he specifically hung around a ton with 5* WR Justyn Ross and 4* RB Asa Martin. Told KN he's confident Auburn will get both when asked why just said "You'll see". Hopes to be back for Big Cat Weekend which is apparently going to be on June 3rd

I agree with those who are worried about bringing in another project at QB but this guy is close with a lot of top talent in this class specifically Jacob Copeland. It really helps classes to have a leader that others want to play with and Gatewood looks to be that guy. I still am ok with us taking another QB just as long as doesn't drive Gatewood away because he's doing work for us right now on recruiting trail

4* WR Jacob Copeland visited all three of his previous top schools this past weekend starting with UF on Friday, Clemson on Saturday and Auburn on Sunday. After those visits decided to narrow his top group to 2, AU & UF according to KN. Apparently he did not have a good trip to Clemson says he wasn't "feeling the vibe". He talked to Burns on his way home and asked if he could swing by athletic complex. Apparently Burns was on campus finishing up visit with Anthony Schwartz so told him to come on by. The two along with Lindsey watched tape on A-Day and Copeland was impressed with how we threw the ball. Calls Burns a "big brother" and says already has calendar marked to be on campus for Big Cat Weekend.

FWIW he tweeted out late last night he's still open to other schools recruiting him just that those 2 are his clear top 2. I think you will see his recruitment take a lot of turns because he loves to play the game with fans. He's constantly throwing out mixed signals on Twitter just to get reactions from fans. But at end of day this is probably going to be an AU/UF battle as those 2 have always been part of top 2

KN also put up a recruiting insider yesterday on A-Day info

Sounds like visit went real well with 4* RB Asa Martin. He likes how we looked on offense and spent most of the game with 2017 signees Jordyn Peters and Carlito Gonzalez along with 4* QB Joey Gatewood. Apparently Gatewood was recruiting Martin just as hard if not harder than Justyn Ross at times and all of that had a positive impact. He spent time with Tim Horton, Chip Lindsey and Gus Malzahn on visit. Apparently he had a really good talk with Malzahn that "opened his eyes to some things". Still says UF leads but that it's real close. Doesn't sound like he is gonna announce anytime soon. Sources at AU seem to think momentum has swung back in our way but this will be a battle to the finish

Things continue to go well with 4* WR Matthew Hill who although hasn't said it publicly seems to be favoring Auburn. As of now the Gamecocks are Auburn's biggest threat. Apparently he was on campus this past Tuesday to check out Auburn's practice as well.

I am thinking he jumps on board this summer if things keep going this way with him

Tigers trending up for 3* DE Caleb Tannor. KN says ignore the ranking, AU is treating this kid like one of the top ranked players in the country. He's been to AU 3 times in the past 2 weeks and stayed late Saturday night bonding with coaches and players. He ended up spending the night. As of now it's looking like AU has emerged as the team to beat but I know UGA is after him as well.

Chances are he ends up a 4* or at least a very high 3* as he has offers from Bama, AU & UGA. Apparently high school he plays at very rarely puts out talent which is why teams and recruiting services have been slow in evaluating him

3* CB Jaycee Horn is apparently a high priority for Auburn. He dropped a top 7 list last night that included AU though I think Bama and Tennessee are considered the top teams right now. An interesting connection is Greg Brown was an assistant on the Saints at the same time as his dad Joe Horn was playing there. Hard to tell exactly where AU stands right now but making the top 7 is a good sign

Big Cat Weekend is scheduled for June 3rd. That's the premier recruiting event for AU over A-day. The reason being they don't have to worry about a game and can instead focus mainly on recruiting during that whole weekend

High-priority WR target Jacob Copeland narrows choices to Auburn and Florida after Clemson visit (SECCountry)
quote:

Jacob Copeland had a busy weekend.

In a three-day span, the 4-star wide receiver visited Florida, Clemson and Auburn — the three schools that have intrigued him most in his recruiting process. The biggest shakeup of the weekend happened at Clemson, a school he was starting to favor. Copeland said his visit to the Clemson spring game actually showed him something different from what he expected.

Clemson is no longer near the top, or in the mix, after what he referred to as a surprising experience in Death Valley.

“Clemson was high for me. Once I got there, I felt like everybody was a stranger. I didn’t feel too welcome around there. I thought it was going to be one of the places I could live for, but it didn’t feel like a fit for me,” Copeland told SEC Country. “It changed a lot up for me.”

That feeling he felt at Clemson made him step back to recognize his priorities. He wants that family feel, a place where he feels welcome and comfortable.

The two places he’s felt that on every visit: Auburn and Florida. On Sunday, Copeland listed the Tigers and the Gators as his top two schools and said he expects those to be the programs he’s choosing between when he announces at the Under Armour All-America Game.

“The top two, by the looks of it. Auburn and Florida,” Copeland said. “When I show up at those campuses, I always feel love. I can do what I want. I don’t have to do this and that like other schools want me to do. I always come here and feel welcome, and I’m always welcome at Florida. Those two places I feel really good at and know I could live there for four to five years.”

Other schools could potentially work their way into the mix.

Miami, Georgia and North Carolina were the first programs Copeland mentioned. He also referenced his long-standing relationship with Tennessee wide receivers coach Kevin Beard, who recruited Copeland during stints with the Miami and Florida International coaching staffs. That bond could help the Volunteers re-enter the mix.

Still, it’s Auburn and Florida that stand out.

He took in the Gators’ spring game on Friday night and came away impressed by quarterback Feleipe Franks. One thing that will help Florida is coach Jim McElwain’s involvement in Copeland’s recruitment. Copeland said head coaches aren’t typically a big factor in his recruitment, but McElwain is one of his primary points of contact.

“They’ve been recruiting me so long since freshman year. They’ve been recruiting me heavy ever since. I talk with coach Mac every day. I communicate with a lot of staff there,” Copeland said. “I already feel like I’m a player over there.”

Copeland decided to end his weekend at Auburn for two reasons.

One, he enjoys a chance to chop it up with wide receivers coach Kodi Burns at every opportunity. And two, the lackluster visit to Clemson made Copeland want to end his recruiting weekend on a high note, which he always knows he can expect from Auburn.

The trip gave the 6-foot-1, 195-pound receiver from Escambia High in Pensacola, Fla., a chance to talk with Burns and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey. Copeland and Lindsey checked out some tape from Auburn’s A-Day spring game, which showed Copeland how different Auburn’s passing game could look in 2017.

“I came into their office to check out what was going on with the spring game to see how much they were throwing the ball. In the first half, seeing they put up like 300-something yards, they ain’t going to key in on one receiver. They’re going to throw it all around the field in open spots,” Copland said. “[Jarrett] Stidham, he threw the ball real well from what I just seen on the highlight tape in the spring game. The true freshman Malik [Willis], he looked good. That’s a good look for me.”

Copeland doesn’t have any visits planned in the near future, but knows he’ll be back at Auburn for Big Cat Weekend on June 3.

I almost think Clemson had too many top targets on campus for their spring game and Copeland got lost in the shuffle. He's a guy that likes to feel wanted and sounds like Clemson blew it. They were his top team. Gators probably have a slight lead on us right now

Brooks OL Kameron Stutts upped his personal timeline when he committed to Auburn (AL.com)
quote:

Auburn landed its fifth commitment of the 2018 class not long before its A-Day scrimmage on Saturday.

Kameron Stutts, a 6-foot-4, 320-pound offensive lineman from Brooks High School in Killen, pledged to the Tigers. After A-Day, Auburn picked up another pledge in Cordova receiver Kolbi Fuqua.

Let's look at Stutts' pledge.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Stutts was offered by Auburn in late July. He had plenty of other offers, including the likes of Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Virginia Tech. But Auburn was always at the top.

He was going to wait until after the season, but decided on his ride down to Auburn Saturday morning that he would make the pledge. He said head coach Gus Malzahn came in the room and "gave me a big old hug."

"Last time I came up here, I said, 'Whenever you go somewhere, you can tell if it's where you need to be,'" Stutts said. "Whenever I came here, it's great people, a great place, awesome atmosphere, great fans and everything. I just really enjoy it."

He developed a strong bond with the coaches as well.

"They're all just really personal, great people, just friendly," Stutts said. "Some people think you can talk to these coaches and you're talking to a superhero. They are great people, but they're just like me, you or anybody."

WHAT HE BRINGS: Brooks will play guard for the Tigers. He has plenty of potential, his coach Brad Black told AL.com earlier this year. Recruiters likely noticed Stutts when they were watching Brooks linebacker Colin Anderson, who signed with Vanderbilt in February.

"Now everybody's going to notice him because he's getting a lot of the offers, but he's always been the man," Black said earlier this year. "He can control a game offensively and defensively if he wants to... That's hard to do from a lineman's standpoint sometimes. He's a very gifted young man with a great attitude and a great work ethic."

Stutts is an honor student with a 3.86 GPA. He earned first team all-state honors in Class 4A. Stutts opens holes on offense and plugs them on defense, showing great athleticism.

WHAT IT MEANS: Brooks becomes the second offensive lineman to choose Auburn behind Stone Mountain, Ga., four-star Jalil Irvin. Brooks is another interior line pledge, though Irvin is slated to be a center. Look for Auburn to take at least two more offensive linemen in this class.
