Auburn makes final 2 schools for top-100 wide receiver who will officially visit (SECCountry)
quote:

Relationships make difference for primetime wide receiver

Ja’Marr Chase‘s recruitment — at least as it pertains to Auburn — is a great representation of the recruiting adage: “Relationships are everything.”

On one hand, he’s still considered a lean to home state LSU. The Rummell (La.) wide receiver committed to Kansas and Florida during the process despite LSU’s consistent recruiting push. For one reason or another, he looked toward other programs over staying instate to attend Baton Rouge. But as his recruitment has come to a close, those relationships he’s fostered with coach Ed Orgeron’s staff have drawn him to LSU.

Relationships are everything, check one.

On another hand, Chase also remains interested in Auburn despite not visiting the Plains. He tried to come for a game in the fall, but he sustained an injury the night before his visit that forced him to cancel. Similarly, he planned to come on an official visit last weekend, but unexpected circumstances changed those plans as well.

That would’ve been enough to make many prospects ask: Is this a sign? But Chase has maintained a strong relationship with Auburn wide receivers coach Kodi Burns. Burns is shooting for the stars with top 100 wide receivers Chase and Justyn Ross. Because of the relationship with Burns, he’ll still take his official visit to Auburn.

In fact, SEC Country LSU reporter Sam Speigelman wrote that Chase has narrowed his recruitment down to only Auburn and LSU.

Without Chase visiting, Burns has kept Auburn in this one.

Relationships are everything, check two.

Auburn will have to hit a home run to win out for Chase, but it’s not out of the question. Chase has already committed to two out-of-state programs. The feeling here is the third time will be the charm for LSU, but Auburn has stayed in this long enough to earn an official visit — and on the last weekend, no less.

Chase will make an announcement at his high school on National Signing Day. The Tigers will hope that the Burns-Chase relationship translates into one of the bigger surprises of this recruiting cycle

I purely want this kid for LSU melting reasons

2019 DL de-commits from UGA week after Auburn visit

At the beginning of the week, I wrote about two key Georgia commits in the 2019 class — 5-star wide receiver Jadon Haselwood and 4-star defensive tackle Rashad Cheney Jr. — who visited Auburn last weekend.

Half of that tandem is no longer committed to Georgia.

Cheney de-committed from the Bulldogs on Thursday, less than a week after being on the Plains. During his visit, Cheney spent a lot of time with his high school teammate, Haselwood, and early enrollee safety Quindarious Monday. Monday developed prior relationships with both of them and played on the same 7-on-7 team as Haselwood.

In multiple reports following Cheney’s de-commitment, he cited a need to back off his commitment because of several programs showing interest and the feeling that he committed too early. Cheney committed to Georgia on Feb. 18, 2017, but in the last year, he’s taken visits to Alabama, South Carolina, Clemson and Auburn.

This wasn’t a gut reaction from Cheney following his Auburn visit. It was something brewed up over time, thanks to visits to multiple elite programs.

There’s no question, however, the Tigers will be heavily in the mix now this recruitment has reopened.

Auburn jumps in ESPN 300 rankings

Several Auburn prospects played in the Under Armour All-America Game. Because of that game’s partnership with ESPN, that’s generally an indication of how ESPN’s recruiting scouts feel about the nation’s football talent. So, when ESPN released its final recruiting rankings of the cycle on Thursday, it was expected to create a boost in a few Tigers’ rankings.

It wasn’t only the Under Armour Game participants, however, who saw boosts.

Eleven Auburn players landed in the ESPN 300:

No. 36 Joey Gatewood
No. 46 Anthony Schwartz
No. 99 Matthew Hill
No. 104 Harold Joiner
No. 116 Seth Williams
No. 118 Quindarious Monday
No. 164 Kayode Oladele
No. 200 Christian Tutt
No. 213 Coynis Miller
No. 248 Zakoby McClain
No. 295 Shaun Shivers

It’s good enough for the No. 8 class in the national rankings and third best in the SEC behind Georgia and Alabama.

Auburn to host 6 official visitors, including pair of top-50 prospects (SECCountry)
quote:

After a weekend without any official visits, Auburn will be back to a busy few days of recruiting on the Plains.

The Tigers will host six official visitors this weekend, including a few of Auburn’s biggest recruiting targets. This will arguably be the most important official visit weekend in the 2018 recruiting cycle. Here are the prospects who will take official visits this weekend:

5-star linebacker Quay Walker
4-star wide receiver Justyn Ross
4-star wide receiver Seth Williams*
4-star defensive lineman Caleb Tannor
3-star defensive lineman Caleb Johnson
3-star cornerback CD Daniels
* Signed with Auburn

There will also be a handful of underclassman unofficial visits. Keep an eye out for potential updates.

Here’s an in-depth look at the visitors.

Official visitors who are uncommitted, unsigned

There are four visiting prospects who fit that category:

Ross
Tannor
Johnson
Daniels

Ross has been the talk of the Class of 2018 well before his senior season. He has been visiting the Plains for years, and his time has finally come for an official visit. Ross is one of Auburn’s remaining can’t-miss targets. This weekend will be for all the marbles. He has already taken his official visits to Alabama and Clemson. After the visit with the Crimson Tide last week, there is a growing level of confidence in Tuscaloosa. Auburn will have its chance to woo him — and expect Gus Malzahn to go see him within the next couple of weeks.

When Tannor originally committed to Georgia last summer, it was a two-team race between Georgia and Alabama. He chose the Bulldogs, but he has since backed off that commitment. Tannor visited Auburn a few times late in the season. That gave the Tigers the perception as the favorite. Auburn likes Tannor’s pass-rush skill set. Now the question is: What position will get the final spots in this recruiting class? If it’s an edge rusher, Tannor is a likely candidate.

Johnson hasn’t been the most highly publicized recruit, but several SEC programs are making him a priority. He visited Florida last weekend, and the Gators made an impression on him. Auburn has been a contender the whole time. Johnson’s position fit makes him a tough projection. He could end up as a defensive end or even defensive tackle, but right now he’s listed as a linebacker by some recruiting services. Johnson is a prospect who will be a steal for whoever lands him.

Daniels has been on Auburn’s radar for a while. The Tigers have kept an eye on the in-state cornerback’s development since the beginning of the process. He recently de-committed from Memphis. With Auburn recently taking Roger McCreary at cornerback, it’s unknown what kind of availability the Tigers will have at the position. Daniels will be in a group with Cam Taylor and Joe Foucha trying to make the cut.

Official visitors committed elsewhere, but unsigned

There’s one visitor who is in that category:

Walker

This will be one of the most important recruiting visits in recent memory. Walker remains committed to Alabama, but he’s looking at other places. He has already officially visited Tennessee and Alabama. Walker plans to go to Georgia next weekend. This weekend will be for Auburn. The Tigers have done a consistent job in the Walker recruitment. Travis Williams has one of Walker’s closest coaching relationships. If there’s going to be a weekend for the Tigers to make a shift in this recruitment, it would be this weekend. I think Auburn is in this much more than the national perception dictates.

There is one visitor who make it into that category:

Williams

There isn’t much to say regarding Williams, considering he’s already signed. He will take his official visit to Auburn this weekend, which will coincide with Ross. There will be two big, physical, in-state wide receivers on campus. In Williams’ case, he’s already in the bag for Auburn.

Auburn coaches have ‘exceeded’ expectations for Rice grad transfer tackle Calvin Anderson (SECCountry)
quote:

The circuitous path to being a grad transfer

Calvin Anderson, more or less, is going through the recruiting process for the first time.

That’s somewhat of a surprise for a 6-foot-6, 301-pound tackle who was a three-year starter for a Division-I program. To fully understand why, however, you must first understand who Anderson was before becoming the potential future NFL draft pick that he is now.

As a high school player in Austin, Texas, Anderson started out small — by his standards, at least. Anderson weighed only 210 pounds. Rice’s coaching staff saw something in him, though. Rice saw a tall, athletic tackle with the frame to sustain massive weight gains.

Anderson trusted the Rice staff. So in his senior season, when a few other programs checked in, he told his coaches he was rolling with the Owls.

“At the time, I was just so committed to Rice, I told them I’m not talking to anybody. If anybody comes, just tell them I’m going to Rice. I didn’t go to any camps. I didn’t do any of that,” Anderson said. “So I didn’t really have a recruiting process.”

Rice’s coaches were vindicated.

Anderson took a redshirt season because, admittedly, he needed to gain weight. By his redshirt freshman season, he was up to 265 — still not where he wanted to be — but it was enough to earn the starting left tackle job. He held onto that post for three seasons, 36 straight games, as his weight increased from 265 to 280 to 300.

Anderson earned honorable-mention all-conference his last two seasons, which says a lot about the tackle’s impact given Rice’s 4-20 record during that span.

As his redshirt junior season winded down, Anderson’s full intention was to finish his career at Rice. But he began to lean on advice and conversations with his father. At 6-foot-6 and 301 pounds — with the ability to play quickly and comfortably at 310 pounds — Anderson started to see a potential NFL future, something the 210-pound Anderson couldn’t have envisioned.

Alas, after last football season, he made the decision to depart as a graduate transfer. That decision caught the attention of Auburn, Texas, Michigan, Notre Dame, TCU and others.

“Shoot man, it was an end-of-season decision. I never thought I would transfer because, like I said, I love Rice,” Anderson said. “We talked about the NFL dream, which had been floating around for a year and a half. We decided it was a real possibility. I just have a unique opportunity to pursue my NFL dream.”

Anderson, set to graduate in May as a mathematical economics analysis major, used some coursework terminology to help explain his final decision to leave Rice.

“I mean, talk about maximizing utility. The grad transfer option was the perfect opportunity to capitalize on a situation and try to maximize your utility,” Anderson said. “I think I’d still be able to develop at Rice, but going to a bigger conference, notably the SEC, which is the best conference in the country, it would give me a better platform, more visibility, more exposure and allow me to play better talent every week. It just seems like a better opportunity. If I’m going to chase this thing, let’s chase it full-throttle.”

Looks like we offered Jarret Patterson yesterday. He is a 4* OT from Cali that we have zero shot of getting. Why offer unless we are just that desperate.

The first meeting with Gus Malzahn and Chip Lindsey

At the beginning of the week, Gus Malzahn began his weeklong recruiting journey that took him all over Alabama, to South Florida, to Mississippi and to Atlanta.

His first stop of the week and perhaps the most important? To Houston.

Malzahn and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey visited the Rice campus earlier this week to make an in-home visit with Anderson. The coaching tandem went out to dinner with Anderson and his longtime girlfriend, a wise move by the Auburn coaches.

Prior to this meeting, Anderson had never met either. He’d spoken with Lindsey throughout the year, but nothing in person. Still, Anderson’s expectations for the SEC coaches were high.

Those were met — and surpassed.

“Anybody who watches college football will probably know Coach Malzahn. I’m a big Cam Newton fan, so I’ve known about Coach Malzahn. I think my expectations were that they were going to be really good football coaches,” Anderson said. “But my expectations were definitely exceeded. Not only were they excellent football coaches — from what it seems — but they’re also really great men, down to earth, easy to talk to.”

As it stands, Auburn doesn’t have any tackles in its 2018 class. Of the options remaining, it’s likely none will be able to provide the immediate-impact potential Anderson brings. The Tigers aren’t alone in that regard, however. Several other programs, namely Texas and Michigan, have articulated their need for a tackle in the 2018 season.

So Auburn has to find ways to differentiate itself.

According to Anderson, Malzahn and Lindsey did that when talking about the depth-chart availability at Auburn and their past tackle successes in the draft.

“They’ve been coming from the perspective as seeing me as a guy for that left tackle spot. It sounds like they will go more in-depth about it and in more detail on that official visit. They think I have the quickness. They think my skill set works well with what they’re trying to do next year,” Anderson said. “Coach Malzahn brought up Greg Robinson and the Cam Newton era. I mean, look, it speaks for itself, but they still brought it up to talk about it. I really appreciate that.”

The Herb Hand factor in this recruitment

Anderson has been in college football for four years, so he understands the business.

Coaches come and go even when they are in the middle of recruiting. Anderson learned that firsthand a few weeks ago when Auburn offensive line coach Herb Hand took the co-offensive coordinator and offensive line coach job with Texas. Hand went from Anderson’s point man with the Tigers to his lead recruiter with the Longhorns.

That makes it particularly interesting since Texas and Auburn are two of the top 3 programs in contention for Anderson.

“What a whirlwind, man,” Anderson said. “I was talking with Herb Hand. He was actually the very first coach to come see me. Recruited me to go to Auburn. Then, three days later, I’m talking to him and he’s in a Texas shirt. It’s wild.”

Anderson has a strong relationship with Hand.

The two have gotten to know each other well in recent weeks. Hand was out to see Anderson later in the week after Malzahn and Lindsey visited him. It’s been an adjustment for Anderson, watching the coaching change take place.

But both sides speak so highly of one another, Anderson doesn’t expect that to play into his final decision.

“But what role does it play? I mean, my first impression of Herb Hand, he’s just great. He’s a great coach. He’s ambitious, which is probably why he took the co-OC job at Texas,” Anderson said. “He thought the Auburn job was a great job. He spoke so highly of Coach Malzahn and Coach Lindsey, all those guys. It was a little interesting.”

Auburn didn’t hesitate during the coaching change.

When Hand left, Auburn was swift in rehiring offensive line coach J.B. Grimes. He took the job and, in his first recruiting move, flew to Houston to spend time at Anderson’s apartment.

If Anderson had any doubts, they were put to rest quickly with the Grimes encounter.

“It was nice to know after all that took place that Coach Lindsey called me right away and reminded me and assured me I was still a priority,” Anderson said. “They hired J.B. Grimes who is also a great guy. He’s a really, really good guy. He’s been doing this a long time. It was nice to see the same day he was hired, he came down to see me and was his first stop. That meant a lot too.”

Calvin Anderson’s recruiting plan with official visits

Since Anderson is graduating in May, he isn’t rushing the process.

With that said, he doesn’t need it to drag on any longer than it has to.

Anderson already has taken an official visit to Texas. He’s in Ann Arbor, Mich., this weekend visiting Jim Harbaugh & Co. Those are the only two official visits Anderson has taken so far. TCU has sent coaches to see him and undoubtedly will push for a visit.

As Anderson puts it, however, Auburn could be the last to receive an official.

“I’m in the process of scheduling an official visit to Auburn. I’ve been thinking this, too. It’s likely I don’t take all five visits. I originally thought I might take all five visits,” Anderson said. “Here’s my thought. I’ll definitely take a visit to Auburn. We have to plan it out. I think I’ll go to Auburn the next weekend or the weekend after. Then I think I might try to decide from there. That’s my thought right now, but obviously it’s all subject to change.”

As of Friday, when Anderson departed for his Michigan official visit, an Auburn official visit date hadn’t been formally set. It will, however. Anderson said it will be either next Friday or Feb. 9. After that visit, he doesn’t expect his decision to linger unless he were to alter plans and take an official visit to another program.

For now, this looks like a three-team race between Texas, Michigan and Auburn. The Tigers are likely to have the last shot at him.

Gotta say this was one of Wolk's better articles. Hoping we land this kid

Auburn football staff uses school’s basketball success to recruit official visitors (SECCountry)
quote:

As one school official joked Saturday, Auburn has become a basketball school.

The Tigers basketball squad tops the Southeastern Conference standings. Auburn added to that strong season with a 95-70 win against LSU on Saturday night.

With six official visitors on campus and several 2019 prospects visiting, the game provided a perfect opportunity for Auburn to use one of its other sports for recruiting purposes. The entire Auburn coaching staff was spotted throughout the game. Most were paired up strategically to recruit the prospects on campus.

All six official visitors — Justyn Ross, Quay Walker, Caleb Johnson, Caleb Tannor, CD Daniels and Seth Williams — were at the game. As the two top-50 prospects, Ross and Walker were flanked by Tigers coaches or players during the game.

Throughout the game, Walker spent most of his time sitting beside Auburn football coach Gus Malzahn and Markaviest “Big Kat” Bryant, the linebacker’s high school teammate. At halftime, Malzahn and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey spent a lot of personal time with Walker, which should give you an idea of the full-staff effort the Tigers are giving to recruit the star linebacker.

Ross sat beside wide receivers coach Kodi Burns for most of the game. Their close relationship is well-documented. He also sat close to wide receiver Darius Slayton during the contest.

Johnson, Tannor and Daniels were all seated with their families.

The 2018 class members weren’t the only ones getting attention from coaches.

A few 2019 prospects attended Auburn on unofficial visits this weekend. Linebacker Nakobe Dean, cornerback Christian Williams, cornerback Raydarious Jones and athlete Malik Washington were at the basketball game and planned to stay overnight. New defensive backs coach Marcus Woodson was responsible for the recruitment of most of those players because of his connection to the state of Mississippi — where Dean and Jones are from — and the fact that a majority of the prospects are defensive backs.

KN put up insider with some nuggets on visitors. Here's summary

- Apparently Asa Martin & Shedrick Jackson are spending a lot of time with Justyn Ross. Visit is supposedly going well but AU feels they are running #3 heading into weekend. Spending a lot of time with Kodi Burns. Also his mom, grandmother & aunt are on the visit, all three are considered important in his recruitment

- KN says Stidham is helping recruit some too

- 3* DL Caleb Johnson is up to 267 lbs. KN continues to hype him up as an underrated DT prospect. Says AU's interest might be rising

- Big Kat was sitting with Walker at bball game. Most sources KN has spoken to say Tennessee is team to beat but one thinks Walker ends up at UGA. AU hoping to get a boost from this weekend

- Staff really likes CD Daniels apparently. Kid has been impressive & they think he can play. Problem is they might not have a spot for him

- KN says final numbers update he has heard is AU can take 26 without Fuqua grayshirting. That means 3 more spots. Four if they ask Fuqua to grayshirt

Interested to see if AU decides to pull trigger on any 3 of Daniels, Tannor & Johnson. Gotta think they might on one of those DL unless they think have made a big move on Ross or Walker

KN says Nakobe Dean spent the night last night

Also says Big Kat was with Quay basically whole visit. Also all the early enrollees spent a lot of time helping recruit specifically Ross

KN also thinks AU interest in Caleb Johnson has risen. Garner apparently impressed with him off the field

Daniels will probably commit on spot if offered. Just not sure there's enough spots

Gus apparently hosted Ross's mom, aunt & grandma at his house for dinner last night

Interested to see if Daniels, Tannor or Johnson pull the trigger
