Auburn plans to sign at least 3 defensive backs with 2018 recruiting class (AL.com)
It's more likely 3 each per position now, CB & S.

It's rare that a high level 4 star announces a commit date 2 days away and no crystal ball picks roll in. And rare there are only 3 picks overall.

Very curious to see what gets reported next 2 days. I got impression it was us and Clemson after his most recent visit but then Rusty on UGA 247 says he thinks ends up UGA/Bama battle. Clemson people don't really know what to think and KN hasn't offered anything yet. Might end up a real surprise commitment

I think we tried to get in game but he just never really liked AU. Not been a huge priority. But apparently he's going to Nebraska

Auburn receiver target Matthew Hill explains why Tigers give him ‘father figure’ feeling (SECCountry)
quote:

Auburn WR target explains decision-making process

ROSWELL, Ga. — In between catching touchdowns — and intercepting passes — at the Corky Kell 7v7 tournament, Matthew Hill spoke more about his recruitment.

As regular readers of this space know, the multi-talented prospect from Brookwood (Ga.) has narrowed it down to a top 5 of Auburn, Alabama, South Carolina, LSU and Florida. He told SEC Country that, aside from the Tigers who he grew up a fan of, the other two programs recruiting him the hardest are Alabama and South Carolina.

He visited Alabama over the weekend and will visit South Carolina this upcoming weekend.

Now Hill claims to have a decision “within the next month” and has one major factor he’s looking toward.

“I need to feel like I’m at home, somewhere that has father figures in my life, just basically where I can go and have fun since football isn’t always in the picture,” Hill said.

So where does he feel that everlasting love?

Definitely at Auburn. He also hears from Alabama and South Carolina, which are the two programs in Hill’s top 5 who figure to be the biggest threats to the Tigers. But Hill has one staff that he feels closest to, that he feels already gives him that “father figure” experience.

It’s yet another positive for the Tigers.

“Coach (Kodi) Burns, coach T-Will, coach (Gus) Malzahn. I’m texting them every day or every other day,” Hill said.

He said it’s similar with Alabama and South Carolina.

But Hill’s childhood fandom of Auburn can’t be undersold. He admitted over the weekend that his early love for the Tigers could’ve had somewhat of an adverse effect on Alabama’s attempts to recruit him. Hill has managed to move past his Iron Bowl blindness, but when it comes to decision time, he will always have his Tigers’ fandom to fall back on.

“Me being a fan, I already know the campus environment. I already know what to expect from Auburn with the fans,” Hill said

Top Auburn defensive back sets Friday decision

Auburn has a big defensive back announcement coming on Friday.

4-star prospect Kyler McMichael will announce his college decision on Friday. The cornerback from Greater Atlanta Christian (Ga.) has set a decision timeline for the end of the week to decide between his top 6 of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida State.

McMichael most recently visited Auburn for Big Cat Weekend where had this to say about the Tigers.

“We definitely made it a priority to get back up [to Auburn]. It’s definitely a top school. I love everything they have to say,” McMichael said. “I’m definitely trying to make it a priority to get back up here as much as possible. … I had no idea what Auburn was like at all. Like getting up here and being able interact with everyone, I loved it.”

Apparently, McMichael won’t need more visits to the Plains to decide, and that may not be the best thing for the Tigers.

He has visited Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and Tennessee since making it to Big Cat Weekend. The first three are believed to be the Tigers’ top competitors when McMichael announces on Friday. As SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner wrote, Alabama, Georgia and Clemson are the likely landing spots, and the Crimson Tide feel comfortable with the result.

For now, the Tigers appears to be on the outside for McMichael, but if anything changes, you’ll be updated.

5 targets most likely to commit to Auburn this summer (SECCountry)
quote:

Let’s set the stage for the rest of the summer.

Auburn only has six commitments, but there are several prospective Tigers soon to join Joey Gatewood, Shaun Shivers, Jalil Irvin, Kameron Stutts, Kolbi Fuqua and Daquan Newkirk. The Tigers will shoot to get close to 25 commitments, so there is work left to do in the 2018 class.

Expect to see several prospects add their names to the aforementioned list in the next few weeks or months.

Here are the five guys most likely to join Auburn’s recruiting class by August.

4-star WR Matthew Hill, Brookwood (Ga.)

Hill grew up an Auburn fan. He hasn’t hidden that.

The wide receiver from Georgia has a close family friend who ran cross country for the Tigers, which is how Hill’s fandom formed. He also has an aunt who was a Cam Newton fan, and Hill followed her lead.

This points to him leaning toward Auburn, something he informed the coaching staff of after Big Cat Weekend.

“I just told the coaches that Auburn is basically the leader because I grew up an Auburn fan. So that’s by default,” Hill said. “Of course I’m going to love Auburn because it’s like home. I have to feel like I’m at home. You know how you feel when you’re at home and feel comfortable? I just want to feel like that wherever I’d go. You want to have a family no matter where you go. That’s what would push me to another school.”

Hill will commit within the next month, and I’d be stunned if the choice isn’t Auburn.

4-star DE Richard Jibunor, Athens Christian (Ga.)

Jibunor didn’t make it for Big Cat Weekend, but have no fear, Auburn fans. He made it back the week later and had a much more personal experience on campus.

The 4-star defensive end spent most of his time with close friend Prince Tega Wanogho. They enjoyed the Auburn football camp and even stepped away to the barbershop to get haircuts. It was an at-home experience for Jibunor who said he wants to get to the Plains as often as he can.

“Every chance I have to come here, I would definitely never miss it for anything because I always love being here,” Jibunor said. “Down in my heart, it’s just fun for me. I feel very comfortable here.”

Jibunor has a few visits he wants to take, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida and Tennessee. Auburn and Tennessee are the only two programs who have recruited Jibunor heavily from start to finish.

Ultimately, I think that plays in the Tigers’ favor.

3-star DE Andres Fox, Mobile Christian (Ala.)

Fox — or, as Kevin Steele calls him, Foxy — has a decision coming in the next couple of weeks.

He attended Big Cat Weekend with his parents. He returned two weeks later for a four-day visit to the Plains. That time, he came on his own, which him allowed him to spend the week as if he were a student-athlete at Auburn.

That’s positive sign No. 1 for the Tigers.

Fox also said Auburn players started poking fun at him about a commitment.

“They be playing around, saying, ‘Commit already — if you go to Alabama I’ll beat you up,'” Fox said.

Fox is being pushed by Alabama, Auburn and LSU. Like I’ve said before, when three programs of that caliber are prioritizing you, you’re not a 3-star prospect. Fox will be a defensive line fixture for years to come for whichever program he chooses.

Fox has leaned toward the Tigers in the past, and that’s where I think he ends up.

3-star WR Shedrick Jackson, Hoover (Ala.)

This one would classify as “on the verge.”

Jackson has made the fast rise from prospect being evaluated to top offered target. Jackson picked up his Auburn offer this spring, and the Tigers have risen up his leaderboard. He attended Big Cat Weekend and returned last weekend to put on a show at camp.

Despite Bo Jackson’s nephew’s ties to the school, Jackson learns more about the Tigers on every visit.

“I learn something new every time. Not always something about the school or the campus but maybe the coaches or the players. More about what the experience would be like if I came here,” Jackson said. “This most recent time, it was probably just meeting new guys. Some from around the country. Some I’ve played against. It’s great mingling with everybody.”

Jackson told reporters last weekend he will announce via a commitment video. He has altered his timeline a few times. It could happen in a couple weeks. It could happen in August.

Regardless, once summer wraps up, Jackson will be in Auburn’s class.

3-star DB Juanyeh Thomas, Niceville (Fla.)

To be honest, it’s surprising this one hasn’t happened already.

Thomas is being recruited by Auburn, Florida and Georgia Tech. The Tigers are recruiting him the hardest, Thomas says. When you’re ranked outside the top 1,000, it’s a safe decision to commit to a school when it’s making a push like Auburn. On top of that, he’s visited the Plains three times in the last month and a half. He asn’t been anywhere else with that kind of regularity.

He’ll be back next month. On that trip, Thomas thinks the end result could be different.

“It didn’t happen, but every time I come back here, I just feel more at home,” Thomas said. “I’m just waiting on coming back here again. I think the next time I come back here, I think I’ll have my decision made on whether I want to commit or not.”

Recent decommitments from other schools have Alabama, Auburn in mix for elite QB prospects (AL.com)
quote:

Alabama and Auburn each have a chance to sign elite quarterback prospects who recently decommitted from other schools.

Justin Fields, the nation's No. 3 overall prospect, decommitted from Penn State earlier this month. He took visits to Georgia, Auburn, Florida State and Florida last week.

Alabama has offered Fields, but he told 247Sports that he doesn't talk to Alabama coaches as much as others. His sister is verbally committed to play softball at Georgia.

Auburn is one of five teams that have his attention, he told 247Sports at the NFA 7-on-7 national championships over the weekend. He played for the Cam Newton All-Star team.

The 6-foot-3, 221-pound Fields, who is from Kennesaw, Ga., is the nation's No. 1 dual-threat quarterback. Auburn is looking to sign two quarterbacks in this class and has a commitment from Joey Gatewood of Jacksonville, Fla.

He isn't the only quarterback to back off a pledge. Matt Corral, a four-star prospect ranked No. 17 nationally, decommitted from USC late last week.

The 6-foot-2, 196-pound Corral, who is from Long Beach, Calif., has three schools that stand out, according to a 247Sports report. Those schools are Alabama, Georgia and Florida.

Corral hasn't made any public comments about his recruiting process, but he and Fields will both participate in the Elite 11 finals at Nike Football's The Opening, which starts on June 29. AL.com will be at the event.

Corral has not visited Alabama yet, but could this summer. Alabama is still after high-profile quarterbacks such as Utah commit Jack Tuttle. The Crimson Tide do not have a quarterback committed for this class yet.
