Thompson 2019 offensive tackle Amari Kight starts 'good relationship' during Auburn visit (AL.com)
quote:

Amari Kight enjoyed his visit to Auburn for Big Cat Weekend.

For all the attention the 2018 recruits receive at this time of year, the Thompson offensive tackle was among a handful of 2019 prospects who visited the Plains last weekend.

Kight received an offer from Auburn last month, making it the second SEC school along with Mississippi State, to offer the 6-foot-5, 308-pound lineman.

"I like the coaches," Kight said. "I like how they run a fast-paced offense; that's what we run in my high school so I feel like I fit in."

Kight cited the relationship with Auburn's coaching staff, particularly offensive line coach Herb Hand, several times as a reason why he likes the Tigers along with the offensive system and proximity to home.

"(Hand is) pretty cool," Kight said. "We got to interact a good bit (Saturday), got to get a good relationship started."

It's readily apparent what Auburn and others see in Kight, who already has a large frame that fill out for two more years before he could even play a college game.

Kight isn't planning to commit anytime soon. He'll listen to "anyone" who wants to offer and lists several other SEC schools as having expressed interest.

He lists his "punch" and footwork among his best traits.

"I have good length," Kight said. "So I can keep defenders off of me."

Yep, and I would say that the Auburn fans wanting Gus fired after a 9-3 season would be a very small and delusional minority.

How Alabama, Auburn view elite Georgia athlete Kyler McMichael (AL.com)
quote:

Kyler McMichael's third trip to Auburn was a charm.

The four-star cornerback from Greater Atlanta Christian School in Norcross, Ga., made the trip to Big Cat Weekend on Saturday with his mother and sister.

Auburn is one of the top schools for the 6-foot, 196-pound McMichael, a four-star recruit ranked No. 106 nationally and as the No. 13-ranked cornerback.

"The highlight was coming in, interacting with different coaches," said McMichael. "We definitely made it a priority to get back up here and interact with coaches. It's definitely a top school. I loved everything he had to say."

The best thing that head coach Gus Malzahn had to say?

"Possibly on getting some offensive plays. Maybe playing me at either slot or running back. I would love that," McMichael said.

He said Clemson is the only other school to also mention playing offense.

Clemson, Alabama, Auburn and Florida State are coming after McMichael the hardest, he said. He planned on making a commitment before the season, but now may take some official visits.

"I want to spend the night on campus," McMichael said. "I'm definitely trying to get back up here as much as possible. I had no idea what Auburn was like at all (before going to a game last fall), but being able to come up here and interact everything was great. I loved it."

McMichael said he expects to be at Alabama later this month with his high school at a passing camp/7-on-7 event.

Alabama prioritizes McMichael as a cornerback.

"I've been able to talk to (secondary coach) Derrick Ansley," McMichael said. "They want bigger press corners, so they see that out of me. That's what I love, getting up on the line, pressing and being physical.

"I have a great relationship with Derrick Ansley. I text him a lot and call him. We're definitely communicating a lot."

Check out McMichael's highlights. He had 1,493 yards and 16 touchdowns rushing last fall and close to 2,000 total yards.

Not sure we have ever won a recruiting battle for a top DB against Bama or Clemson...

In-state running back Asa Martin talks Alabama camp, Auburn's Big Cat Weekend (AL.com)
quote:

Austin High running back Asa Martin made two key visits this week as he prepares for an Aug. 24 commitment.

Martin went to Auburn's Big Cat Weekend on Saturday and performed in Alabama's camp on Tuesday. Martin, a four-star recruit, will visit Florida at some point this summer. Those schools make up Martin's top three.

Martin worked out at running back for the Crimson Tide and while he's been open to playing defense, he said that Alabama has been recruiting him only as a running back.

"I had a really good time getting to work for (running backs coach) Burton Burns and (offensive coordinator) Brian Daboll and spent a little time with them so it went pretty well," Martin said. "They thought I did pretty good. I ran some routes for them and played in the slot a little bit, so I think they really liked that."

Alabama has six running backs on the roster and all could come back in 2018 on scholarship, though two will be draft-eligible in Bo Scarbrough and Damien Harris.

"Depth is never a factor for me," Martin said. "Wherever you go, you're going to have to compete. All the running backs are great, so competing with them will get me better anyway."

On how he feels like he'd fit in the offense at Alabama, Martin said, "I feel like I'd fit in pretty good. I feel like I can do some things differently than their backs do now, so I think I can help them out a lot."

Alabama hosted five-star Zamir White on Saturday and Murfreesboro, Tenn., four-star Master W. Teague III also competed at camp. Martin looks like a prime target for the Crimson Tide.

"I do feel like I'm kind of a priority, so that's a good thing," Martin said.

Martin earned his Auburn offer earlier this year, and the Tigers don't have a running back committed who is around Martin's size at 6-foot and 190 pounds.

"It went pretty good," Martin said. "It was good meeting and hanging out with top recruits that I could potentially play with, so it was pretty good."

Big Cat Weekend is an informal event and not a camp setting. He did trick fellow running back recruit Tae Provens into competing in an eating contest.

"Probably the rap battle (stood out the most)," Martin said. "I think coach T-Will (Travis Williams) should have won it, but they gave it to Coach (Herb) Hand."

Martin said his mother was able to attend and she got a good look at the schools' academic situations.

"I feel pretty much the same about about Auburn and every school that's in my top three," Martin said. "They're all the same right and now and I'll make the decision and get it over with. I'm not rushing."

Martin still talks to Florida coaches on a regular basis.

"It's interesting, a lot of the big time players stay in state, but why not go be different?" Martin said.

He shared why he narrowed it down to a top three.

"The biggest factors were where I felt comfortable," Martin said. "It was all about me being comfortable with me and my mom and dad as well. I feel comfortable at all three schools."

Martin ran for 99 yards on eight carries in Austin's spring game against Sparkman. He also scored on a 22-yard touchdown run. Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was in attendance.

Martin is the state's No. 7 player and nation's No. 11 running back per the 247Sports composite. He attended the IMG Academy as a junior before returning to Austin before the spring semester.

Honestly, I kinda wish Bama would steal White away from UGA. Bama is already hoarding a ton of talent another freak won't change anything. Don't want UGA to start doing the same thing plus White committing to Bama could help us with Martin. Just a thought....

Auburn's remaining two 2017 signees expected on campus soon (AL.com)
quote:

All but two of Auburn's 2017 signees are on campus, but they aren't far behind.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said he expects defensive back Carlito Gonzales and kicker Anders Carlson to arrive on campus later this month.

"Those two, it'll be about a week and a half," Malzahn said Thursday before speaking at his Ambush tour stop on Lake Martin. "Everything is on go on that.... They're the only two out there. Everyone else is checked in and here and off to a really good start."

Gonzalez, a three-star safety, and Carlson, a three-star kicker, are both expected to be on campus by the start of Auburn's second summer mini-semester, which begins on June 26.

Gonzalez is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound safety out of Stephenson High in Stone Mountain, Ga. He brings a level of physicality that Auburn likes in its safeties, and while he is likely to redshirt as a freshman, that trait could earn him a role on special teams as a freshman in 2017.

Carlson is the younger brother of current Auburn kicker and two-time Lou Groza Award finalist Daniel Carlson. He was rated the nation's No. 1 kicker coming out of The Classical Academy in Pike National Forest, Colo., and is the heir apparent to his older brother, who is entering his final year of eligibility.

Auburn had five freshman early enrollees this spring, while the remainder of its 23-member signing class -- with the exception of athlete Alaric Williams, who didn't qualify academically and will enroll in a junior college -- arrived earlier this summer.

Rewatched Gonzalez highlights they other day. Man that dude is a boss. No idea how his rating was lower. I think he ends up the #4 safety by end of the season and starts next year

Auburn leads for rising cornerback prospect Charles McClelland (AL.com)
quote:

Charles McClelland was a relative unknown in the recruiting world until he picked up an offer from Auburn on May 31.

Now, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound defensive back from Clinch County High School in Homerville, Ga., has SEC offers from the Tigers and LSU.

"I was just happy," McClelland said at Big Cat Weekend. "I really wasn't expecting any SEC schools to ever offer me, to be honest. I thought I was too small to have a chance to play in the SEC."

McClelland isn't ranked and only has profiles on 247Sports and Scout.com. That will change soon.

He rushed for 1,574 yards and 27 touchdowns as a junior and played safety. He's being recruited by Auburn as a cornerback.

"They think I'm versatile and I've got the ability to play more than one position," McClelland said. "I played three or four last year. I think I can do it all.

"(Auburn likes him) Because I'm a good football player and the way I try to be physical on the field, show my dominance to the other team."

McClelland had a boot on his right foot Saturday due to an injury, but said he should be able to start putting pressure on it this week.

Auburn leads for McClelland, he said. Cincinnati and Tulane were also high, but that was before the LSU offer.

"They play in a big conference. I want to play at the highest level," McClelland said.

He'll be able to camp for Auburn in July, and by then his recruiting status should clear up.

But McClelland is one of the faster rising sleeper prospects in this class.

"I'm probably going to wait until after the season," McClelland said. "I don't want to think about too much."

I have no idea how good or not good this kid is because of how bad his competition is... Seriously go watch his tape, it's crazy how small some of those defenders are

FWIW he's camping at UGA tomorrow and there are some that think he might get an offer. His teammates 3* DT John Mincey will probably commit to UGA soon if not today or tomorrow

The skinny: Ross’ mother returned from an overseas military deployment last month, which likely accelerates his schedule for making a college decision for the receiver from Central-Phenix City. Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State and Florida are among the schools pursuing Ross.

Remember, Ross is friends with Markail Benton, who recently signed with Alabama and John Broussard, who just finished his first year at Auburn.

Gonna be salty on this one for awhile... Was really excited about the idea of landing a top CB for once

Would be stunned if we got him. Maybe if Stidham lights things up and AU has WRs showing out while Bama struggles again to throw deep? Not getting hopes up tho

I've actually thought about that quite a bit. I think the lower value placed on RBs in the NFL Draft the past decade has trickled down to college football. I think if you are in the right system for it, which AU is, you can plug & play a good number of RBs in a recruiting class & they would be very productive.
