4-star WR Kearis Jackson breaks down Auburn interest leading up to Big Cat Weekend visit (SECCountry)
quote:

Georgia WR to return for Big Cat Weekend

Auburn will be loaded with wide receiver talent for Big Cat Weekend.

Shedrick Jackson, Justyn Ross and Kolbi Fuqua are confirmed visitors. You can add another name to the list: 4-star Kearis Jackson. He’s the No. 24 wide receiver in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite, but in a strong year for receivers, that puts him outside the top 100 overall at No. 121.

Jackson is familiar with the Plains. Since Auburn offered in January, Jackson has visited the Tigers twice. He expects to return to a comfortable environment this weekend for Auburn’s premier recruiting event of the summer.

“I’ve visited more than once, so I think I will like it again. I’m just going to keep liking it,” Jackson told SEC Country.

Jackson most recently attended Auburn twice in a month span, including one of the Tigers’ spring junior days.

It gave him a first impression of the program, as well as some more personalized time with the coaching staff. His non-junior day trip was a midweek visit that allowed Jackson to be on campus when few other prospects were, which meant Gus Malzahn, Chip Lindsey, Kodi Burns and others could place their full attention on the 5-foot-11 wide receiver from Peach County (Ga.).

Like most prospects who visit Auburn, Jackson was blown away by the tight-knit culture he experienced on the Plains.

“That’s important really. They show a lot of love,” Jackson said. “Everybody down there, they’re like a family really. I like that a lot really.”

Auburn, of course, isn’t the only team chasing this highly-coveted receiver.

Georgia is considered the favorite with the in-state pull. Ohio State, Alabama, Michigan and 20 or so others have offered and will work to get Jackson on campus in the coming weeks and months. Jackson has started to narrow in on a select group of top schools, but that’s something he’s keeping to himself for now.

As for his decision factor, Jackson even admitted it’s something he thinks could help Auburn in the long run.

“I don’t want to go nowhere where I’ll be a redshirt, sitting on the depth chart, nothing like that,” Jackson said. “Georgia and Auburn. Those are the only two I’ve seen. I know Auburn, they aren’t really signing many receivers this year, so that’s good.”

There is one other key factor helping Auburn here.

That’s the recruitment of Trey Hill, the No. 2 offensive guard in the nation. As written about in this space last week, Jackson and Hill want to play college ball together. That figures to be positive news for Georgia, which seemingly sits in the driver’s seat for both, but it’s also a great sign for Auburn.

Jackson and Hill have the Tigers heavily in the mix and, if Hill makes the trip, they could end up at Big Cat Weekend together. Those two recruitments will be linked until the finish.

Jackson seems to be much more certain than Hill that the two prospects will end up at the same destination.

“We communicate a lot, and we plan on playing together,” Jackson said.

All I know is the fapping that would happen if AU got Justin Fields, Trey Hill, Justyn Ross and Kearis Jackson. It's possibly but highly unlikely. However, if AU were to say win 10+ games lead by an explosive passing game then I think chances greatly increase. A big year on the field could lead to big year off the field so don't freaking blow this Gus

Why 4-star safety’s potential absence isn’t a concern

Quindarious Monday is one of Auburn’s top safety targets.

The 4-star prospect from Carver (Ga.) in Atlanta has spoken highly of the Tigers in the past and has said he intends to visit Auburn for its Big Cat Weekend recruiting event, which will take place on Saturday. It should be an impressive cast that Monday has always been scheduled to be a part of.

He’s not completely ruling out his ability to make it, but as pointed out last week, his role on the Cam Newton 7-on-7 team will take precedent over his recruiting visit plans. The tournament will reconvene on Friday, and if Monday, Justin Fields and others on that team have their way, the squad will earn its way into Saturday play as well.

That would likely take Monday and Fields off the visit list for the weekend, though only Monday has previously been a confirmed guest. In fact, Monday told SEC Country on Tuesday that he will “probably not” be in attendance despite his previous wishes to be there.

This shouldn’t frighten Auburn fans.

In fact, the Tigers can (jokingly) blame one of their own — Newton — for preoccupying Monday’s time. The safety starred on Memorial Day, stating his case as one of the best defensive players competing. It shows Monday’s team-first competitiveness to put the 7-on-7 squad, which has a rare title-or-bust attitude, before his own recruitment.

Auburn will end up getting a visit from Monday in the near future, if he’s ultimately unable to attend this weekend.

He’s just putting Cam Newton’s 7-on-7 squad as his priority this time around.

Would suck if Monday missed BCW. Really was hoping we could get him on board this weekend but that's sounding unlikely now

Looking ahead, looking back at Big Cat (Rivals)
quote:

Saturday will mark the ninth straight year for Auburn’s Big Cat, a day which quickly became one of the most important ones for the Tigers since its debut in 2009.

Approximately 35 of Auburn’s top targets are expected to attend this year’s version of the event. The day will include games, lots of food, fun and fellowship.

The preliminary list of visitors for Big Cat 2017 is full of star power.

Five of the top in-state players are expected to attend, including five-star receiver Justyn Ross, Rivals100 running back Asa Martin and four-star defensive lineman Coynis Miller. Auburn commitments Kameron Stutts and Kolbi Fuqua will be at Big Cat, as will Hoover wide receiver Shedrick Jackson, Mountain Brook athlete Harold Joiner, Mobile Christian defensive end Andres Fox and Pleasant Grove athlete Myles Mason.

The list of expected out-of-state visitors includes Jerome Carvin, a four-star offensive tackle from Cordova, Tenn. The state of Georgia will be well-represented as a pair of Rivals100 linebackers, Zakoby McClain and JJ Peterson, both plan to attend, as do four-star athlete Kyler McMichael and safety Quindarious Monday, two of Auburn’s top targets from the Atlanta area.

From Florida, Rivals250 wide receiver Jacob Copeland, cornerback Juanyeh Thomas and safety Jamien Sherwood plan to attend, as does Joseph Foucha, one of the top players from Louisiana.

HISTORY OF BIG CAT

The first Big Cat event was held May 29, 2009, which was during Gene Chizik’s first year as Auburn’s head coach and Gus Malzahn’s first year as Auburn’s offensive coordinator.

Curtis Luper, who doubled as the Tigers’ running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at the time, first pitched the idea to Chizik.

“Coach Chizik kept saying that we needed to be different, to bring him ideas of what we could do to be different,” Luper, now at TCU, told AuburnSports.com in 2011. “I put the idea out there and we all just ran with it.”

Brainstorming the idea with Luper included a core group of highly-respected recruiters: fellow Auburn assistants Trooper Taylor, Tommy Thigpen and Jay Boulware.

"We wanted to do something really different, really unique that would stick and have some name recognition," Luper said.

The brainstorming resulted in the birth of Big Cat.

SUCCESS OF BIG CAT

Auburn signed the No. 4 recruiting class in 2010, with nearly half of the signees attending Big Cat.

The second year was even more successful.

Of Auburn’s 24 signees in 2011, a class ranked No. 7 by Rivals.com, 13 attended Big Cat. The group included Greg Robinson, the No. 2 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, as well as Reese Dismukes, a consensus All-American, Remington Trophy winner and starter of 50 games at Auburn.

The success continued.

In February, Auburn signed a top-15 class, a group that included 21 high school players. Eleven of the 21 attended Big Cat, including former five-star offensive tackle Calvin Ashley, who attended two (2015 and 2016).

In 2015, defensive tackle Derrick Brown attended Big Cat. So did Kyle Davis, Nate Craig-Myers and Marlon Davidson, all former five-star recruits, and Tre Threat and Elijah Stove, both four-star recruits. All played at Auburn last year as freshmen.

Interesting that JLee has Joiner & Mason visiting while KN is reporting they probably won't be there

Updated 2018 Rivals100: Three five-stars join the mix; Lawrence stays No. 1 (Rivals)
quote:

The latest Rivals100 for the class of 2018 has been released and there have been some major moves, including three new five-star prospects, bringing our still-early total to 23. And while quarterback Trevor Lawrence remains our No. 1 prospect, the top 10 saw some shifting.

There are no changes in the top three with cornerback Patrick Surtain No. 2 and defensive end Xavier Thomas No. 3, California wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown jumped up to No. 4 and took over as his state’s top prospect. New five-star Justin Fields, a Penn State quarterback commitment, moved up 99 spots to No. 8 and safety Anthony Cook and running back Lorenzo Lingard, a Miami commitment, also moved into the top 10 with minor moves upwards.

Wide receivers Terrace Marshall Jr. and Devonta Jason, a Kansas commitment, are also new five-stars checking in at No. 20 and No. 22 respectively. Wide receiver Jalen Hall is the last five-star, falling 17 spots to No. 23 while Oklahoma offensive line commitment Brey Walker remains the highest ranked four-star.

Here’s a breakdown from our regional analysts of the new five stars and the biggest movers.

THE NEW FIVE-STARS

QB Justin Fields

“It is hard to find a more exciting player in this class. Yes, Lawrence is a special talent, but the way Fields can throw, the way he can run and the way he can make plays, it makes many think of Cam Newton. Fields has a live arm, he has really improved as a passer and his legs make him scary. Fields remains committed to Penn State, but Auburn, Florida, Florida State and Georgia among others continue to recruit him.” – Chad Simmons, Rivals.com Southeast Recruiting Analyst

Big Movers

CB Kyler McMichael

“McMichael is an impressive athlete who could project as a cornerback or safety in the secondary, and if that wasn't enough, he could make plays on offense as running back or wide receiver. He is a physical player who can play press or off coverage. He takes good angles, plays with his eyes and is going to be a strong, physical defensive back on the next level who makes plays on the ball and support the run. Alabama, Clemson, Florida State and Georgia are four of the schools on McMichael's list and he hopes to commit this summer.” -- Simmons

WR Anthony Schwartz

“Probably the fastest receiver in the 2018 class, Schwartz recently set the youth world record in the 100 meters with a time of 10.15 seconds and that speed translates onto the field. He will run track in addition to playing football at the college of his choice. Schwartz has wide-ranging offers. He lists a top six of Miami, Florida, Auburn, Georgia, LSU and USC.” – Rob Cassidy, Rivals.com Florida Recruiting Analyst

Change of pace from the Lollipop Guild WR corp we trotted out there last season? It would be a better sell to add Him to the Guild.

WR Jacob Copeland

WR Kearis Jackson

Movement: N/A

Analyst’s take: “If you have attended a 7-on-7 that Jackson has competed at this spring, then you likely left talking about how impressive he was. He has been a star the last few months showcasing his strong hands, his quickness and his ability to make plays in space. He is great after the catch. No favorites yet for Jackson, but Auburn, Georgia and Ohio State are three schools he definitely has his eye on.” - Simmons

CB Jaycee Horn

Analyst’s take: “Horn has been locking wide receivers down since he moved to Georgia over a year ago. He has the body of a safety, he is strong at cornerback and he does not shy away from competition. He has good instincts, he is physical and his ball skills are a strength. Alabama had the lead early in the spring, but as we head into the summer, South Carolina has taken over at the top.” - Simmons

Analyst’s take: “Tindall is a physically impressive linebacker prospect who can cover quite a bit of ground in space as well. His ability to move at his size makes him highly coveted by college staffs and also helped him make a move up the ranks. Auburn, Georgia and South Carolina are among the schools in the mix for Tindall.” – Wommack

DT Coynis Miller

Movement: N/A

Analyst’s take: “The defensive scheme could play a role in where Miller plays. He is quick enough and strong enough to play the five-technique on the outside, but he could be dominant inside at the three-technique too. He is very strong at the point of attack and he has good agility. Being a top prospect in Alabama, it is likely to be an in-state battle in the end, but Florida, Georgia and few others are hanging around.” - Simmons

Analyst’s take: “Harris is such an athletic linebacker. He has great football speed, he is a big hitter and he can play inside or outside on the next level. He is good in space and he can come down hill inside the box. Ohio State is in front by a large margin with Auburn and Georgia next on his list. He visits Ohio State in June and a decision while in Columbus is possible.” - Simmons

He has great size and his mobility surprises some. His ceiling is high at tight end. There is a long list of schools in the running, with Alabama and Georgia and getting summer visits.” - Simmons
