I've read that De Boer was successful at Ajax until his last season in which he resigned, had a sub-par run at Inter and then only lasted 4 league games at Crystal Palace in which he lost all 4 and his squad didn't score a single goal.
My question is how long of a rope do we give this guy? The product we have seen has been disjointed, slow, and painful to watch. I know part of this is because Miggy is sorely missed but whatever style that Frank wants us to play isn't working. I played for 18 years and I could not tell you how Frank wants us to play either due to a lack of chemistry or players' lack of understanding his system.

Maybe some soccer experts can help me out. How much impact does a coach have during a game exactly (other than substitutions)? Is it all in the prep for that week? It seems very little direction can be given during a match. What is the direct impact of a coach on the players of MLS caliber of just going out and kicking arse?

The coach has a huge impact. He is the one responsible for making tactical decisions in order to adjust to how the other team is playing. These decisions include formation changes, personnel changes via subs, telling your mids to press or to hold back, pass out of the back through the middle or attack the wingers, focus on crossing vs through balls to the strikers, whether the striker should hold the ball up vs making off the ball runs expecting precision through balls.
Whether or not the back line plays high or deep is another important decision that is made based on how the opposing team's strikers/midfield is attacking.

That all makes a lot of sense. What is the form of of communication to the players?
Thanks

Similar to baseball where players memorize a form of sign language to convey a message, the soccer coach has certain words or phrases that he will convey to the captain of each unit who is then responsible for relaying it to the rest of the team. Or he will tell a sub what changes to relay to the team as he changes players.
Also just like the NFL, you do not go pro in soccer without understanding all these different concepts and strategies.

I don’t understand why they hired a guy with a different style... should have hust promoted someone on tata’s staff

No two coaches have the same exact style. Dr Boer's system isn't that different from what Martino did most of the time.
