MLB.com on Braves winning day 2 at the draft...

quote:

As part of the penalty for their extensive international signing violations under former general manager John Coppolella, the Braves forfeited their 2018 third-round pick. Despite that significant handicap, they still managed to amass the best haul of talent on the second day of the Draft.

Even without what would have been the eighth overall choice on Tuesday, Atlanta still managed to land MLB Pipeline's highest-ranked prospect taken in rounds three through 10. The Braves grabbed Stanford right-hander Tristan Beck, No. 35 on our Top 200 Draft Prospects list, in the fourth round after he figured to go closer to the first round. Returning from a stress fracture in his back that sidelined him for all of 2017, he wasn't as sharp as he was as a freshman but still showed a plus changeup, the potential for at least a solid fastball and curveball and advanced feel for pitching.

Atlanta also nabbed our top-rated junior college arm in the fifth round in John A. Logan (Ill.) CC right-hander Trey Riley (No. 76 on the Top 200), who has a 92-97 mph fastball with cutting action and a mid-80s slider that can be a wipeout pitch. Sixth-round outfielder Andrew Moritz (No. 142) is a pure hitter who won three Southern Conference batting titles in three years while hitting a school-record .406 at UNC Greensboro, and he also has solid speed and a good chance to stay in center field. The son of former big leaguer Tony Graffanino, Washington shortstop A.J. Graffanino is an eighth-round sleeper with plus actions and arm strength.

is everyone maxing out their all star votes? You get 5 per day and 35 total per email address I think.

I really want Markakis to finally get there, and to be voted in as a starter would be awesome. I don't think it'll happen, but I'm confident he'll at least get selected as a reserve. I think the only two chances we have at getting starters will be Freddie and/or Ozzie. Freddie because he's just a stud, and Ozzie because he's hitting homeruns and has been getting a lot of national attention. He is precisely the type of player that the fans tend to vote in (especially early in their career) whether they deserve it or not. Flashy, exciting, and hitting homeruns.

Folty pitched 5 innings, giving up 2 runs, striking out 8 and exactly 100 pitches before they replaced him with Biddle

Btw, here's round 29 for the Braves' draft:

Damn the Braves are still down 2 to 1 in the 8th, they just had Ozzie leadoff with a double, and Dansby, Freddie and Nick (who you'd think you would want up right?) stranded him.

Then our usually best reliever Winkler allowed a 3rd run. Got to score 2 runs in the 9th now when the Braves haven't since the 1st inning.

It is frustrating watching an explosive team like ours lose a game like yesterday.

Soroka had a good 3 inning start in A level ball, but they want him to have one more good one before joining the Braves again: LINK

The Acuna watch isn't totally clear on when he's coming back, but this familiar writer says he thinks the home Padres series in the middle of June: LINK

Damn, wish Buehler had the day off. He got the Braves out 3 up 3 down in the first... even his fellow former Vandy player Swanson and the best Brave, Freddie.
