Why isn't the Broyles Award named the Wilson Matthews Award?

Is it because Matthews isn't alive for Bassel to suck his dick?
I understand the explanation they give but it seems contrite especially given Peepaw's history of meddling. Maybe all of his great assistants were only able to become great after getting away from him?
