Alabama recruiting: Updates on Crimson Tide’s latest class

quote:

Each Friday, SEC Country will review the week that was in Alabama recruiting. That includes an overview of the current commitments, top remaining targets and what could be in store next for the Tide.

Alabama has laid the foundation for what should be a top-5 recruiting class in 2019. Over the next few months, the coaching staff will attempt to keep some of the nation’s top prospects in-state and add championship-level talent to the roster.

The Tide’s 2019 recruiting class, which is up to nine commitments, could have as many as 27 players come National Signing Day in February... (read more)

Notes: I'm not posting the entire article. It has links to recent articles, in case you missed any. Otherwise, it's essentially the same info that's always available and current in the first two posts in this thread.

Imo, the author is over on the number of WRs (3) and under on the number of DLs (5) Bama will take. He also lists every OLB prospect as a "Jack" LB. Maybe he doesn't know Bama also has a "Sam" OLB position. Also, Bama recruits some guys who'll play multiple LB positions.

The latest on Alabama’s push for 5-star center Clay Webb

Clay Webb is ranked as a 5-star prospect by the 247Sports composite.
quote:

Alabama finished seventh in the 2018 class recruiting rankings, but expect the Crimson Tide to be back on top in 2019. SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner will answer the Recruiting Question of the Day each weekday. You can ask him your questions on  Twitter or on  Facebook. Find our previous questions and answers  here.

Any thoughts or conversations about Clay Webb and Alabama? @vinceblank1

Clay Webb, listed by the 247Sports composite as the nation’s No. 1 center, has been a major Alabama target for more than a year now. He will continue to be recruited as a priority target until he signs his letter of intent on Dec. 20, which is the first day of the early signing period. Webb (Oxford, AlA.) has said he also plans to commit that day.

I know some Alabama fans were worried that Webb visited Athens, Ga., for G-Day over Tuscaloosa for A-Day. There’s really no need to be concerned there. Webb had visited Alabama on back-to-back weekends. He’s been to Tuscaloosa so much over the past year that skipping a scrimmage isn’t a big deal. It also needs to be noted that Webb competed in a camp that Sunday after the spring games in Roswell, Ga., which is close to Athens. Webb also has a few family members in Georgia, and one of his cousins lives in Athens.

An interesting wrinkle in Webb’s decision is what he shared with my colleague Jeff Sentell. His mom has a preference on where she wants him to go. “She wants me to go to Clemson,” Webb said. “She likes Todd Bates because he used to coach at Oxford [Webb’s school] and she knows him very well.” Bates is Clemson’s defensive line coach. Webb doesn’t visit Clemson much, but plans to check out the Tigers this summer.

Webb’s thoughts on Alabama have been consistent throughout his recruitment. He has the closest relationship with offensive line coach Brent Key. He calls him an uncle. Webb also is close friends with 5-star tackle commit Pierce Quick and 4-star quarterback Paul Tyson. They went on a spring break trip together.

Webb's decision will likely come down to Alabama, Auburn and Georgia. The Crimson Tide should be considered the clubhouse leader to land his signature.

Yeah, they mad! Tiger Rant & SEC Rant are both loaded with Guice threads.

What's going on around the SEC -- news nuggets (thread link)

LSU

There’s never a lack of drama in LSU athletics, and the latest seems to be credible sources that Athletics Director Joe Alleva will retire this year. Alleva has been criticized for his elevation of Ed Orgeron after the firing of Les Miles early in the 2016 season.

The athletics director may also be a victim of sagging donations and season ticket sales for football (though that’s an issue across the nation). As might be expected in Louisiana, the athletics department is intertwined with politics.

If a change is made, expect the first name to come up as new AD for the Tigers to be Scott Woodward, an LSU alum and Baton Rouge native who is director of athletics at Texas A&M. There is a realization at LSU, though, that it can’t outbid the Aggies.

The Tigers are not happy that running back Derrius Guice was not taken in the first round of the NFL draft.

LSU’s quarterback battle will not be decided early, at least until the end of fall camp and “probably” with both Myles Brennan and Justin McMillan playing.

That SEC news nuggets thread link I posted above has two articles covering all the SEC schools -- with some pretty good stuff to share on the SEC Rant. Just sayin'...

Five-star DB has Tide among top schools (BamaOnLine)

quote:

The last time Alabama turned to Tulsa, Oklahoma for a recruit, it landed four-star running back Joshua Jacobs in the 2016 class. The Crimson Tide is back in The Sooner State this cycle hoping to land Daxton Hill, the nation’s No. 2 safety from Tulsa (Okl.) Booker T. Washington.

After hosting the five-star defensive back last weekend for A-Day, Bama made Hill’s top six on Friday evening — something he said would happen when he spoke to BamaOnLine earlier this week. “I was cutting down my list soon and they’re definitely on there,” Hill told BOL. “I’m going to give a top school a chance.” Along with the Tide, Clemson, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma State made the cut.

On Thursday night, UA head coach Nick Saban called Hill from the NFL Draft. It was nice timing, too, considering Saban compares the elite DB to Minkah Fitzpatrick who was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the first round. “They were making comparisons of me and Minkah Fitzpatrick,” Hill said earlier this month. “So I guess they’re wanting me to play a lot of different positions. That’s what Coach Saban was telling me.”

Hill, the younger brother of Oklahoma State running back Justice Hill, has been adamant about not limiting himself to just the in-state programs despite his 247Sports Crystal Ball reading 78 percent in favor of Oklahoma, with the remaining 22 percent favoring the Cowboys. “I’m doing my own thing,” he said. “Really I just want to keep my options open. I don’t just want to look in state, I want to look out of state, too.”

Hill doesn’t plan to wait around on making a decision. A commitment could be coming in the next few months. “I really want to focus on one school and just get a better feel of that school as I’m committed to that school,” he said. “I really don’t want to wait too long. I want to commit as soon as I can and get a feel for that university.”

Why could he see himself at Alabama? “Really just the people they put into the league,” he said. “Just talking with them and seeing how they really enjoy the way I play. They said I’m the No. 1 guy they’re trying to get after DB-wise. And just how great they’ve been playing over these last couple years. Hearing that from them, knowing I could come in and dominate, it would be great.”

At 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, Hill is rated the No. 2 safety and the No. 33 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite rankings. Last season, Hill compiled 67 tackles, six tackles for a loss, and five interceptions.

Making the Case: Where will Kevin Harris go?

quote:

The 2019 class is on the clock and several of the nation’s top players have begun to cut their lists in advance of a commitment announcement. Today, experts from the Rivals.com network examine where four-star defensive end Kevin Harris might end up playing his college football. The candidates are Alabama, LSU and Miami.

THE SITUATION

Harris is one of the top edge rushers in the 2019 class. He has picked up more than 20 offers, but his list has been cut to Alabama, LSU and Miami. He has visited each of these schools, and at different times, each has been viewed as the favorite. Harris is now set to commit to the Crimson Tide, Tigers or Hurricanes on May 1.

With a decision coming into focus we asked our team experts to state the case for their respective programs and let National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell issue a verdict.

THE CASE FOR ALABAMA

“Kevin Harris visited Alabama a few times this spring. He earned an offer from Nick Saban during the first visit. The second trip was on Monday when he stopped in after taking a visit to Miami.

"Harris has high interest in the Crimson Tide. He is recruited as an outside linebacker and pass rushing specialist. He can be used in the Tide system similar to former star Tim Williams.

"Harris will announce his decision on Tuesday. It seems like his recruitment is down to the wire between Alabama and Miami. It can go either way. Both sides seem to think they have a good chance. It may come down to how Harris is feeling on Tuesday morning.” – Andrew Bone, BamaInsider.com

THE CASE FOR LSU

“The LSU coaching staff has done a strong job recruiting Harris. The fact that his family is from there and that there's still extended family in the area is a positive. The Tigers have looked like the leader for quite some time and then he had a positive visit to Alabama. The fact that he still has a visit to LSU last leading into his announcement is a good positive for Ed Orgeron to close the deal.” – Mike Scarbrough, TigerBait.com

THE CASE FOR MIAMI

“Harris was believed to be zoning in on Alabama before his Miami visit but the Hurricanes' program has more going for it now than it ever has. A new state of the art indoor practice facility is almost finished and new modern dorms are being built that will house future players. Combine that with the campus' resort setting and the clear advancement of the football program and it is no secret why an official to Miami last weekend gave Harris a pause in his decision making. Joe Jackson is likely to enter the NFL Draft after this season and there could be a great opportunity for immediate playing time at Miami as well.” – Gary Ferman, CaneSport.com

Note: Harris nixed his OV to LSU this weekend.

THE VERDICT

“I will go with Miami due to the relationship with new defensive line coach Jess Simpson. Harris feels comfortable around the Miami staff and I will pick the Hurricanes.” – Mike Farrell, Rivals.com National Director of Recruiting
