The Opening Regional in Atlanta is chock-full of top talent across the Southeast year after year. This year's event, held the Sunday before last, was no different. Several Alabama targets took part in the competition with invitations to The Opening Finals later this summer in Texas on the line. Here's a look at some of the testing numbers for Tide targets.

Top-50 recruit Nathan Pickering ‘can’t wait’ to visit Florida this weekend

quote:

DE Nathan Pickering previews Florida visit

Florida is in contention for a trio of top-100 overall recruits from Mississippi, including 4-star defensive end Nathan Pickering.

The 6-foot-5, 270-pound pass rusher is making a two-day trip to Florida this weekend, which will be his first time in Gainesville. It’s an unofficial visit for Pickering.

What made him want to check out Florida on his own dime?

“To be honest,” he said, “Dan Mullen.”

The first-year Gators coach was hired after nine seasons at Mississippi State, one of two SEC programs in Pickering’s home state. He has known Mullen for a couple years and there’s a strong bond between them.

“He’s a great coach and we got to know each other when he was at Mississippi State,” Pickering said. “When he found out who I was and met me, we just got close from that point on. It’s a great relationship.

“We both like each other and we both have confidence in each other. I’m confident in what he’s going to do at Florida. I can’t wait to get there for my visit. Not only to see the school, just to see him in general.”

However, the purpose of Pickering’s trip isn’t just a reunion with Mullen. He’s familiar with Florida’s football program and the successful seasons in 2012, 2015 and 2016.

Pickering doesn’t think the Gators are that far from competing for championships.

“I really have an interest in Florida by the way their team has been over the past 10 years,” Pickering said. “It hasn’t been that long since they won a national championship and they’ve had a few good teams since then. So that’s a school that I really wanted to visit.”

Academics matter most to Nathan Pickering

Other than Mullen and the Gators’ recent history, Pickering doesn’t know much about the school or other coaches on staff.

He’s been in contact with defensive coordinator Todd Grantham, but wants to meet him in person. He also wants to meet defensive line coach Sal Sunseri.

“I’ve talked to Coach Grantham a few times and I like him,” Pickering said. “He’s behind Coach Mullen 100 percent and that’s how all the coaches are. I look forward to going there, meeting the rest of his staff and seeing what they have to offer at Florida.”

There’s also the academic side of things. Pickering is big on education and plans to major in mechanical engineering. Two of his family members are mechanics and sparked his interest in the field.

“It’s been fun for me to fix things and see how they work. I enjoy it,” Pickering said. “So I think that’s something I could do that would be a good-paying job as well as fun.”

Pickering said he wants to do two things during his visit to Florida:

- Discuss his desired major with the coaching staff.
- Meet with the dean of the engineering school.

“The first thing I want to see on my visit is how important my education is to them. I’m education-first before anything,” Pickering said. “So if they show that they’re more interested in getting my education over football, it’s automatic that they’re going to be in the running because that is what’s most important to me. I look for coaches who will see what I want to major in.”

Pickering is ranked the nation’s No. 4 strongside defensive end and No. 50 overall prospect in the 247Sports composite. He holds more than 20 scholarship offers, including Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia and LSU.

“Right now, I’m just letting it roll,” Pickering said of his recruitment. “I dropped my top 15 last month and I’m going to drop my 10 during the summer or at the end of summer. Then I’ll go from there.”

2-way player

South Carolina is recruiting McCollough to play two positions, one on offense and one on defense.

“When I talk to Coach Muschamp, he said he wants me to play both ways, running back and defensive back, that stood out to me,” McCollough said. “Other than that, I feel South Carolina is on the come up and they’ll be one of the teams to mess with in the SEC.”

South Carolina is the only SEC school that’s presented him with that option.

“It’s just different,” McCollough said. “I feel I can go up there and have an immediate impact as a freshman, so that’s always a factor. And it’s just a different atmosphere, a different environment.”

Muschamp has made a good impression.

“He’s just a cool guy, a defensive minded person and I like that,” McCollough said. “I know for sure the defense is going to be stopping people. He’s just real laid-back, real chill.”

McCollough added, “He really just says he wants me up there, it doesn’t matter what position or when, he just wants me to come play.”

And there’s a chance McCollough could link up with Fann and join the Gamecocks 2019 class.

“I talk to Curt almost every week and we catch up. We actually talk about South Carolina, Auburn, Georgia. We’re actually serious about South Carolina,” McCollough said.

4-star DE from Mississippi hopes to visits Arkansas in coming months

quote:

4-star DE Byron Young expects to visit Arkansas this summer

Arkansas recently made the list of top schools for 2019 defensive end Byron Young. That was an essential step in the Hogs’ chances at eventually getting a commitment from Young, who is a 4-star prospect on the 247Sports composite.

The next step is getting him on campus. That ideally will happen in the next few months. Young recently told SEC Country he hopes to get an up-close look at what Arkansas has to offer this summer.

Young (6-foot-5, 260 pounds) attends West Jones High School in Laurel, Miss. In 11 games as a junior, Young had 14 sacks and 22 tackles for loss.

He is the No. 179 overall recruit and ranked No. 10 in Mississippi in the 2019 class. He lists the Razorbacks as one of his top choices along with Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Mississippi State, Ole Miss and South Carolina.

Arkansas hosts 4-star 2019 WR, two 2020 QBs Tuesday

Arkansas was back at it Tuesday hosting some top recruiting targets. The most notable was 4-star 2019 wide receiver Devonta Lee.

From Amite, La., Lee (6-2, 215) initially was expected to visit Fayetteville in late February. He scrapped those plans at the last minute, opting to visit Alabama. But a trip to Arkansas remained a priority and he made that happen Tuesday.

Lee is the No. 66 overall recruit in his class. He recently listed the Razorbacks among his top choices. His trip to Fayetteville comes after visits to Kentucky and Tennessee last week.

The Hogs also hosted two 2020 quarterbacks Tuesday — Hunter Dunn and Shane Illingworth.

From Tomball, Texas, Dunn (6-3, 165) has yet to land a major offers. However, he has received interest from several Power 5 schools with Georgia, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas among those he’s visited.

Illingworth (6-5, 220) is a 4-star prospect from Norco High School, located 50 miles east of Los Angeles. He arrived at Arkansas with offers from Arizona State, Colorado, Louisville and San Jose State.
