TE Michael Mayer
Alexandria, KY

A tall, athletic tight end prospect, Mayer has already collected offers from some of college football’s top programs, including Alabama, Michigan and Notre Dame. Mayer’s emergence on the national recruiting scene has come quickly and we held off putting him in the Rivals100 until we can get a chance to get an in-person evaluation this offseason.

This is the first I'm hearing of us offering Mayer. As a matter of fact to my knowledge we haven't even offered a TE in the Class of 2020 before reading this.

2020 freak Arik Gilbert talks being a five-star, recruiting and more

quote:

Rivals.com named 10 five-stars in the 2020 class last week Arik Gilbert was one of them. Gilbert is a 6-foot-4, 247 pound athlete out of Marietta (Ga.) that is being recruited as a tight end, defensive end and athlete.

He can do it all.

We aren't the only ones that feel that way.

"I see Arik every day and I see a kid with an unlimited skill-set," said Marietta head football coach Richard Morgan. "He is still just learning the game, so he still has so much room to grow as a player. He is getting stronger, he is getting bigger, he is learning and he is really starting to blossom.

"So many coaches love him because he is such a special athlete and he still has so much to learn about football. As good of a player that he already is, he still has os much room to get better, so he potential is unlimited."

Gilbert has somewhere around 30 offers. He does not know exactly, but he can basically go anywhere he wants to go. He is that type of player.

The sophomore is a humble young man, so what does he think about being considered one of the premiere prospects in his class?

"Being a five-star in my mind means I have to hold myself to a higher standard because I know many more people will be looking at me," said Gilbert. "Whether I am in a game, at a camp of wherever I am at, I know many will be looking, so I just have to perform and keep working hard."

Having that fifth star on his profile is not something Gilbert is going to talk about or make a big deal about, but it is something he will take pride in.

"Being a five-star has crossed my mind in the past, so it does mean something to me now being one. To me, being a five-star is being considered one of the best overall, so it is pretty big.

"I still have a lot of work to do, so I am going to keep working hard, but having the stars is something I have thought about."

Gilbert said he can catch the ball, run after the catch, block, line up anywhere and rush the passer. He is a versatile athlete. Some think he plays on Sundays as rush end, one of the most coveted positions now with the game now, but if it comes down to his choice, it may be a position on the other side of the ball.

"My favorite position is tight end because when I was younger, I played a lot of defense, so I did not get to touch the ball a lot, so now, I get to move around, I get the ball and I just like it.

"I watch a lot of Travis Kelsey and Rob Gronkowski and I like how they play. Some schools like me on offense and some on defense. I do like catching the ball if I had to pick one."

Coach Morgan has coached many big-time prospects that have gone on to play at the next level. Josh Sweat is one who will be drafted this year after spending three years at Florida State.

Sweat was a five-star in the 2015 class.

"There are some comparisons between those two," said Morgan. "Josh was a little more lean in high school and they weigh about the same now as Josh prepares for the NFL Draft. I see Arik maybe in that 270-275 pound range and it is scary to think about him three to four years from now and what he could be doing at that size.

"Arik reminds me a lot of Josh in the way that he loves the game and the upside that he has. I just marvel at how athletic Arik is and what kind of potential he has. Arik has a shot to go very far. He has great grades, he has good support and he has great talent."

Morgan saw Sweat get pursued by every major program in the country before signing with the Seminoles. Where is Gilbert right now with the recruiting process?

"In my mind, some that jump out when I think about recruiting are Alabama, Penn State, Georgia, Clemson, Miami and LSU," said Gilbert. "I do not really have favorites or anything right now.

"I am still evaluating schools. I am still looking at how schools play on the field, how they distribute the ball if they want me on offense, how I relate to the coaching staff and the overall campus environment."

Gilbert is not close to making a decision at this time. He wants to visit Clemson and Penn State this spring, but no visits to those schools or any others are scheduled at this time. He has already visited Georgia and Miami in 2018.

Marietta starts spring practice May 2.

1. Which 2020 prospect is going to cause the most recruiting drama?

Rob Cassidy (Southeast): It’s too early to tell with these guys, but it’s safe to bet on a committed player. A good portion of prospects that commit this early end up having three or four changes of heart. I don’t think it’s fair to toss out one name based on that, so I’ll just say some committed kid will change his mind three times.

Mike Farrell (National): I’m not sure if it will be drama but it could be a great recruiting battle for early Miami commitment Leonard Manuel. The big wide receiver could very well stick with the ‘Canes but we all know a ton of schools are going to come in and try to get visits and flip him. He’s not from South Florida, which makes him more open to poaching. I doubt he produces the most drama, someone will commit three or four times, but he could be a great recruiting battle to watch.

Adam Friedman (Mid-Atlantic): This is always a tough question but I think it'll be Antoine Sampah. The Rivals100 linebacker out of Northern Virginia has taken what seems like dozens of visits and isn't showing signs of slowing down. As one of the nation's most coveted recruits, college coaches will be pleading with him to get back on campus so we'll see how much more he gets out there.

Adam Gorney (West/National): In my region, I'm going with five-star quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei. He's not particularly into drama or playing out the recruiting process but he's a legitimate first-round MLB Draft pick and so he's going to have to make a decision on whether football, baseball or both sports are in his future. He probably won't make any final choices until he gets a much better feel on where he would be drafted by a baseball franchise. That might not come until after his senior season of high school football. USC, LSU, Arizona and many others are involved.

Josh Helmholdt (Midwest): In the Midwest, Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. could create one of the most intriguing recruiting dramas if he is so inclined. Most schools that recruit the state of Ohio expect the home-state Buckeyes to be the biggest competition, but the Cincinnati area is unique among the major metropolitan areas in the state. Only once in the last five classes has the top-ranked prospect in Cincinnati signed with Ohio State, and they were stung by five-star offensive tackle Jackson Carman choosing Clemson in the most recent class.

Nick Krueger (Texas): In my region, I’ll pick Demond Demas. By no means does he seem like the kind of player that would purposely create much drama, but he has nearly 50 offers already and keeps a notoriously low profile. Recruiting doesn’t seem to be his top priority, and because there is likely to be a fair amount of mystery surrounding who he likes going forward, fan bases from this school or that will surely be debating who holds the lead with him for some time. The in-state and more regional programs seem to have an inherent advantage with him, but no shortage of college coaches will make a pass by his high school this spring to have a look at him.

Chad Simmons (Southeast): McKinnley Jackson is the one many have their eyes on right now. He has already committed and de-committed to LSU, so he was in the headlines early. Alabama is in this, Auburn is in this, Georgia is involved, and of course LSU and the in-state schools, Ole Miss and Mississippi State are being considered. Jackson has mentioned how he would like to check out the West Coast schools too, so this one will draw a lot of attention over the next 18 months.

Woody Wommack (Southeast): Not that I think he’s a dramatic guy but defensive tackle McKinnley Jackson is already very well known and has already been involved in his share of drama, having committed and de-committed from LSU already. With his talent, top schools will be battling to get him on campus and in the fold. With many of his top contenders being SEC rivals, it only magnifies the spotlight on Jackson and his recruitment.

2. What will be the most interesting recruiting debate in 2020 (such as Fields vs. Lawrence in 2018)?

Rob Cassidy (Southeast): Locally, it’ll be a friendly battle for the top defensive back spot in Florida. Miles Brooks and Fred Davis attend the same high school and play for the same 7v7 team. Both are high-level prospects that look like the better at times. For now, Davis has the edge, but Brooks is a hyper-talented prospect capable of overtaking his teammate at the top of the rankings. We’ll see how it plays out.

Mike Farrell (National): It’s a great quarterback class so I think you’ll see some debates there. We already have one five-star quarterback in D.J. Uiagalelei but he could end up choosing baseball a la Joe Mauer. But there are many highly ranked four-star quarterbacks right now that I could see four or five potential five-stars at the position and a really good debate as to who is the best.

Adam Friedman (Mid-Atlantic): This is such a talented class that what's probably going to be the biggest debate will be which player is No. 1. Just skimming the Rivals100 that just came out, there are a number of names that could be considered for that top spot and there are a lot of players that look like they could end up as five-stars and challenge for that top spot.

Adam Gorney (West/National): There are going to be a lot of interesting debates at wide receiver because Miami commit Leonard Manuel and five-star Johnny Wilson lead the way right now but there are numerous high-level four-stars who will be pushing even higher in later rankings cycles. Julian Fleming, Demond Demas, Rashawn Williams and Porter Rooks are all guys pushing toward the top of the list and will definitely have multiple opportunities to prove they're the best receiver in the class.

Josh Helmholdt (Midwest): Honestly, it is too early to say. Justin Fields did not emerge as a serious threat to Trevor Lawrence's No. 1 ranking until after his junior season. There is so much left to evaluate with this class that the top storylines have yet to be determined. One thing I am interested to discern are which position groups will be the strength of the class, because early on it appears offensive tackle, defensive end and wide receiver are solid.

Nick Krueger (Texas): There are two battles that I am keeping an eye on in Texas: The first being the battle between Zachary Evans and Jase McClellan for the distinction of top player in the state and perhaps the top running back prospect in the country. McClellan had found his way onto the recruiting radar a little earlier than Evans, who has had a meteoric rise after his sophomore year. The broader battle which will be interesting to watch this year, 2020, and beyond is the new turf war that is likely to rage on between Texas and Texas A&M for recruiting supremacy in the class rankings.

Chad Simmons (Southeast): It is very early, so a lot of prospects are still to be identified and evaluated, but it looks like it will be a very strong year at the offensive tackle position. Myles Hinton is now a five-star offensive tackle and right on his heels already in my area are Tate Ratledge and Broderick Jones. This is a premium position that looks to have some premium talent in the 2020 class.

Woody Wommack (Southeast): Not to go back to the well in quarterback battles in the state of Georgia, but the Peach State could have two of the best in the nation again with Harrison Bailey and Max Johnson. The two have different skillsets but both have been on the radar since before their high school careers even started and both boast offers from around the country. The debate on who is better has already started and will continue to heat up as the cycle moves along.

Will it be baseball or football for five-star QB Uiagalelei?

quote:

FONTANA, Calif. - Football, baseball or both?

That will be the question D.J. Uiagalelei will have to answer in the coming years since the 2020 five-star quarterback from Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco is a star football player and might be a first-round Major League Baseball pick, too.

“That’s what people say,” Uiagalelei said this past weekend at the Passing Down SoCal Regional. “That I’m supposed to be a first-round pick coming out of high school.

“That’s very big. I’ve always liked baseball. That’s always been a sport I’ve always loved. That’s a real sport for me, that’s a real possibility.”

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound quarterback took over the starting job shortly into his sophomore season at powerhouse Bosco and finished with 2,733 passing yards with 29 touchdowns and two interceptions. He also rushed for four scores. USC, Alabama, LSU, Michigan and other national powers remain seriously involved in his early recruitment.

He is not playing baseball this season at Bosco but has developed a reputation as one of the best high school-level pitchers nationally and he’s traveled the country playing club baseball for years.

For Uiagalelei, a five-star in the first 2020 rankings released this week, his future is bright whether it’s on the football field, on the baseball diamond or both.

“It just depends when that time comes,” Uiagalelei said. “If I go to college, I want to play both in college. I want to play both football and baseball in college. Whatever college lets me play both, that’s where I’ll go. If I do decide to go straight out of high school to the MLB then that’s another thing.”

The decision does not need to be rushed. Uiagalelei is not playing high school baseball this year as he focuses on an ever-demanding football schedule that has him traveling all over the region for camps and 7-on-7 tournaments.

But he will return to the sport for his junior and senior years and he already has a lot of seasoning. The 2020 recruit has been playing baseball since he was four years old. He had only three years of youth football under his belt.

It’s a rare situation to be a baseball and football star at this level, but hardly unprecedented. In his senior year of high school, Joe Mauer was the only player ever to be selected the USA Today High School Player of the Year in both sports. He’s now the first baseman for the Minnesota Twins.

Drew Henson played at Michigan (according to reports, he was going to sign with Florida State until Chris Weinke, coming back from a stint in the minor leagues, picked the Seminoles) and signed a professional baseball contract with the New York Yankees.

A four-star in the 2002 recruiting class, long-time pro Jeff Francouer turned down playing football at Clemson after being a first-round MLB Draft pick and then had a lengthy career with multiple baseball franchises. Two-time Super Bowl champion John Elway was a talented baseball player who was selected in the 18th round by the Kansas City Royals. He chose football - and that sure paid off.

According to Uiagalelei’s dad, the word he’s been told from scouts is that his son has first-round potential. Long-term, he might have that potential in the NFL Draft as well. It will still be a choice, though, whether one or both sports will be pursued seriously after high school. A commitment that won’t have to come soon.

“I still don’t know,” Uiagalelei said. “For right now I’m just worried about high school. That’s a long time away. I’m just worried about my high school season now for football. When that time comes I’ll worry about that then.

“I’ll play my junior and senior years of baseball so that’s when I’ll really get down with baseball.”

And really ready to choose what his future holds.

2020 four-star defensive tackle has favorites

quote:

Jamil Burroughs is a 2020 four-star defensive tackle out of Powder Springs (Ga.) McEachern with double-digit offers.

He is on the back-end of his sophomore year and he is ready to name six schools that he is high on.

"My top six schools are Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Tennessee, Clemson and South Carolina," said Burroughs. "I have already visited half of those this year and I will be taking more visits soon."

Burroughs is a monster in the trenches and the 6-foot-3, 290 pounder was named a four-star by Rivals Wednesday. He speaks on his top six schools.

ALABAMA: "Alabama is Alabama. I grew up watching them and I love their defense. They know how to win too. This is one school I have not visited yet, but I will be visiting soon. I cannot wait to get over there."

AUBURN: "I have always loved Auburn. It was one of the schools I liked watching when I was growing up. I have had a good feeling for them for a while. I have been there for games and they have an unbelievable atmosphere. I love their fans."

CLEMSON: "I am talking to Clemson about every other day and I love the support they offer and the way they are recruiting me. I really like coach Todd Bates. He has a great personality, he is a great coach and he makes things fun."

GEORGIA: "Georgia is close to home, so I like that. I have known Kirby Smart since I was young because I was going to camps he was at. We have a great connection. I have that home feel when I am at Georgia too."

SOUTH CAROLINA: "I love how South Carolina pushes academics and has the support to help their players. Their staff is great and they really work hard for their players. I have gotten to know coach [Lance] Thompson too and I like him."

TENNESSEE: "I have gotten to be tight with coach Jeremy Pruitt. As soon as I showed up on campus, he was right there and we spent a lot of time together. I like what he is doing at Tennessee. I also like their facilities and the campus is very nice."

Burroughs is not ready to say this is his final six schools, but he did say that it could be. Other offers are going to come in, but will it be one that will affect his list?

It may be fairly early in his recruitment, but he thinks he has a good feel for things.

"You can only commit to one school, so I have got it down to six and I will likely get it down to four," said Burroughs. "I know what I am looking for in a school, so I know which schools I like.

"I have good relationships with coaches at each of my top six schools and that is important to me. Each of these schools is staying on me and I feel I could do well at any of them."

There is no order to his list. Burroughs said he likes each school the same.

Burroughs expects to make an early decision, but he has no timeline in mind yet.

FIVE BURROUGHS FACTS:

Favorite food:
Hot wings

Favorite TV show: Martin (going old school)

Favorite music artist: Drake

Hollywood crush: Rhianna

2020 prospect he wants to play with in college: Andy Boykin (Auburn commit)

How big of a recruiting tool is Alabama’s new series, Shop Talk?

quote:

Let’s get this out of the way, Alabama’s newest short series, Shop Talk, is a well-executed recruiting tool that fans can also enjoy. For those who haven’t seen it, Shop Talk features former Alabama stars sitting around a barbershop talking about their experiences playing for the university. The first episode features Julio Jones, Ryan Anderson and Eddie Jackson, who are all now in the NFL. Nick Saban is also in the barbershop talking with the players.

In the first episode, the trio talks about how Alabama’s facilities are much better today than what they once were when Jones was on campus. Jones jokes that he actually got lost and needed someone to direct him around.

If that isn’t a subliminal message about how great Alabama’s facilities are and how much fun stuff they have for the players then I don’t know what is. Oh, and the guys saying of this have won national championships and are now making millions of dollars in the NFL.

But the real recruiting magic is when Saban speaks to the guys. For those who don’t closely follow Alabama and only see highlights of Saban yelling at his assistant coaches or the media, this series really puts the coach in a good light. Take this part of the show for example when Saban is talking about how much his former players being around the program means to him:

“The thing that I don’t get to say much that makes me feel the best, even about winning games or anything else, is that all you guys that played here over the last 11 years that I’ve been here, everybody likes coming back,” Saban said. “That’s the most important thing to me, that you guys enjoy coming back.

“That means you had a great experience here, you liked the people here, you appreciate some of the people who helped you here, you come back to help the next guy. And that spirit sort of makes it special. I never really get to say that much but it is something that makes me really, really feel good as a coach that you guys feel that way because everybody out there says how hard it is and all this stuff, but really there’s a sense of accomplishment and pride that everybody that is really kind of a neat thing.”

Recruits tell me how Saban isn’t as mean as he looks on TV and that talking to him 1-on-1, he’s funny and easy to connect with. With this series, we now get to see that with our own eyes.

Alabama was significantly behind other programs in terms of its presence on social media, in my opinion. Even 5-star tackle commit Pierce Quick admitted it to SEC Country.

“Me and my dad have been telling them they gotta catch up in social media and all that stuff and making cool edits,” Quick said. “Clemson is the best. They would send me sick edits every single day. I loved it.”

The program has now stepped its game up and has even taken it to a new level with Shop Talk.

Alabama's QB targets for 2019 (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Despite actively recruiting a number of quarterbacks for its 2018 class, Alabama did not sign one on scholarship come National Signing Day. The Crimson Tide received a commitment from East Carolina graduate transfer quarterback Gardner Minshew in late February, but ultimately the Mississippi native opted for Washington State to play out his remaining eligibility.

This leaves the Tide with just three scholarship quarterbacks heading into the season and an important position to fill come next February. Don't be surprised to see the Tide work to sign two quarterbacks in the class, with arguably its two top targets residing just down the road from Tuscaloosa. Here's a look at the quarterbacks Tide fans should know at this stage in the recruiting cycle.

Sound familiar? Alabama could have a Tagovailoa under center for years to come if the four-star signal caller from Alabaster (Ala.) Thompson joins the Crimson Tide. It's hard to imagine a scenario where the Tide doesn't land at least one of the two between Tagovailoa and Tyson -- if not both -- but there are other names to watch, especially with the Tide adding Dan Enos to its staff as quarterbacks coach. One of the first offers with Enos in place was to Evans, a Colorado commit. The offer is an intriguing one considering Evans was at one point committed to Arkansas, where Enos was on staff last season. The 6-foot-2, 192-pounder passed for 3,627 yards and 42 touchdowns last season.
